NFL Preseason 2018 Game Observations Thread (1 Viewer)

Abdullah with the start for the Lions, but promptly fumbled (with a recovery) on his second carry. O-line did him no favors, though, as he had a guard being slammed back into his face as he was taking the hand off. Gotta hold on to that, though.

 
Lots of rotating for the Lions RBs (as expected). Abdullah was in for 1st and 2nd down with Riddick subbing in on 3rd for a drive and a half, then Kerryon got some early down work. 

 
All McCaffrey on the opening drive. A 9 yard reception and 71 yard TD run. He wasn't touched on the td. He showed some speed, but the Miami secondary looked slow.

He'll be 31 in October.

Played 4 years of lacrosse for Penn St. and graduated in 2010 with a year of elgibility left so he went to Monmouth as a 5th year Sr. and played a year of football. Came into the league in 2011 as an UFDA for the 49'ers.

 
Calvin Ridley looking pretty decent, not super flashy but he knows how to get open and make himself an easy target. On the TD catch he slowed his route and used the other receiver's go route to draw the defenders just far enough away to stop underneath, turn, and catch a low pass from Schaub and fall into the end zone.

Mahomes throws a pretty awful pick directly into coverage. Play action with two deep go routes on the outside, didn't see the safety at all and forced a deep ball to Watkins when he had zero separation. Could have checked it down for a short gain to either of his TEs.

 
Bradberry makes the best case for the helmet rule in one play by lowering his helmet before colliding with Drake and knocking himself out. 

 
Abdullah muffs a return (but recovers it). Not a good outing for getting traded so far. 

Classic Detroit running game troubles continue as no one is getting any space to run.

I agree the game needs to change to reduce head injuries, but the counter to this is Herzlich getting tagged for a 15 yard penalty for running at Theo Riddick and I guess, not standing up taller? Didn't lower his head at all, just running forward in a normal defensive stance, but Riddick is so much shorter that when he stepped up for blitz pickup there was the tell-tale "pop!" sound of a helmet to helmet hit. Neither player seemed affected at all, but the Lions convert on 3rd down despite another Giants player (Lorenzo Carter) making a beast of a play for sack. 

 
Robert Quinn with 2 sacks and a QB pressure in the first half. Good pickup by Miami. 

Drake with a superb 30+ yard run. He's Miami's best rb by far. Ellusiveness and speed.

 
Sammy Watkins is going to be great in Kansas City...

...as Tyreek Hill's decoy.

Mahomes chucking it to both of those guys could be nice though. Culpepper-esque.

The same thing happened in the ATL game. When Neal tackled Hunt you heard a "pop" and Neal was flagged for leading with his helmet but during the replay you could clearly see that he lead with his shoulder. It really does have the potential to be anywhere from frustrating to disastrous.

He looks great. He exhibits patience when pressing the line, waiting for blocks to develop and when he sees a lane he has the ability to quickly cut and explode through it. His hands aren't too shabby either. I think the fact that Gase made him split work with Williams before Williams' injury last year means that he really doesn't think he can handle a large workload though. There really isn't a another plausible explanation given the talent gap. 

 
AJ McCarron's sideline standing experience should serve him well this season.

note: I did not know he had broken his collarbone when I posted the above.

MFL shows him at 29, turning 30 in October.

 
Josh Rosen looks good. When he isn’t pressured he is making good decisions and showing accuracy and zip. He probably starts week one.

 
Is anyone watching the Saints game?  Jonathan Williams sure looks like the Saints’ fill in for Ingram while suspended ...
