NFL viewership off 11% YOY (1 Viewer)

The way it's implemented in the NFL is awful. Other sports have it right and it takes mere seconds each time. I've seen a couple of rugby matches (where the calls are just as complex as the NFL - it's not as simple as something like tennis) where the ref on the field asks for help, it goes to the video ref who reviews it and radios down his decision. Ref on the field relays to call to everyone or they post the call on the scoreboard and move on. It's absurd that we have the refs on the field go look at some monitor or that they are involved in the decision at all.
They aren't involved in the decision in the nfl anymore are they?  I thought the call was made in NY.  No reason for the ref to saunter over to the sideline and squint into the Microsoft SurfaceTM.  If we're gonna have to sit through this travesty, have Hochuli stand in the middle of the field and listen to his earpiece while Blandino says, "Uhhhnnn...incomplete."

Everybody has known for years that the NFL has idiotic rules.  The TD catch by James was a catch by any remotely intuitive standard.  The fact that the NFL thinks that it is a good idea for its rulebook and referees to become the story in the biggest game of the regular season is baffling to me.  This is not a case of "all publicity is good publicity."  This is more like The Walking Dead insulting its audience and being surprised when its ratings drop off.

Way better than waiting 25 minutes for a review or sitting in a hyped stadium that goes dead, waiting waiting waiting waiting for the play to be reversed. Between flags and replay you can't even get excited until 8 minutes after the play ends anymore. It SUCKS
Not a chance.  First of all it doesn't take 25 minutes for a review.  The issue is that the length of the game has increased by 6 minutes over the last 10 years.  They've gotten a minute back this year.  You just have forgotten how bad it used to be.

Obviously that was an exaggeration but these reviews are tedious and suck the soul out of the stadium. It's an awful experience.

That James review sure as heck felt like it.  It went on so long the announcers started asking what was taking so long... THEN they went to advertisement, then they came back and we waited a bit longer.

If the NCAA isn't careful it could kill their March golden goose.  The ends of MANY games in last year's tourney were interminable with replaying every other play to see who knocked it out of bounds and whether it was a flagrant foul and if the kid's jock strap was over the line.
Meanwhile in the first 38 minutes they use the normal way and just assume the guy behind was the one to knock it out of bounds.  The game/rules are different implemented differently.

They also need to have time limits.  If you can't tell within a minute then the play stands.
Amen

You don't need a congressional meeting to determine the play.

I'd go 1 step further

Ref get 1 angle 1 replay.

Not a re re re re re re replay zooooooooom and multiple angles. Replay was intended for the blatant obvious error.

#Steelers coach Mike Tomlin on the catch rule:

“We all can acknowledge that all of this needs to be revisited, it’s not just at play. We have this similar discussion week in, week out. As a member of committee, I acknowledge we got our work cut out for us this offseason.”

It's not Indiana every state in the union unless a GOP lawmaker from either side of the aisle grandstands for attention-whoring purposes.
Fixed.

What cracks me up the most about the guys that think their reps and sens are better than the other guys is that they are basically looking at two steaming piles of crap and trying to say with a straight face that their pile of crap stinks the least. This just in, all the politicians, whether D or R do nothing unless it gets them publicity. They are all grand standers. To think otherwise is beyond naive.

James non catch was a pretty easy call. Nipsey is correct here. It took the announcers like ten replays before they saw the obvious so by then everybody had made up their mind.

The zach miller play earlier this year was a far more egregious example. The NFL released a bs fake news follow up video where they randomly point to a zach miller body part and say see, here is the ball, clearly on the ground.

Um, I didn't say that both sides don't suck. They do. Our government system is one big rotting pile of feces that no one is willing to do anything about because "the really bad guy might win". I hate our political system so damn much and I want it to die.

That said, I live in Indiana. I work in the news industry in Indiana. Indiana has a very, very strong GOP representation in state government. And there are a lot of members of the Indiana GOP that like to introduce bills to get a splashy headline. That's all.

You are correct. You didn't say both sides don't suck. But twice now youv'e singled out only GOP members of your legislation for doing bad things. That's like listening to Rush Limbaugh and thinking, "Wow, those liberals do bad things, but obviously none of the conservatives do that dastardly stuff." The only reason, you in the news media, don't see it happening more from the left in your state, is probably because there are less of those in the left elected. If they had the majority and got more press, guess what they would be doing all the time? Politicians (not necessarily R's, D's, L's or C's) love them some splashy headlines.

Why do you think I'm disagreeing with you? I'm not. I already stated there's far less Democrats elected in my state. The mayor of South Bend is an openly-gay Democrat whose star has been on the rise since he came out three years ago and who is an expert at getting good press for himself.

I argue the same points you're making to me ad nauseum to people on the "right" and "left" all the time. I clash with my boss all of the time because of the hateful rhetoric our hosts seem to love to encourage and what it's doing to us as a country.

I just merely pointed out that Indiana lawmakers love to grandstand. That's all. I'm on your side here.

That was what I was trying to say. Too many in our country point to other guys and say "You're inherently bad which is why I voted for the other guys," when in fact they also voted for the inherently bad. We all did unless you bothered voting third party which is the same as abstaining from the vote entirely.

There is a politics forum meant for this kind of discussion.

Thank you.

I  don't think overall engagement is down that much, they need to change up the way they measure this crap. I watched RedZone for at least 5 hours on probably 12 of the 17 NFL Sundays, stuff like that isn't counted.

Final drop numbers are in for the regular season.

2015->2016 Drop of 8%

2016->2017 Drop of 9.7%

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/21960086/nfl-television-ratings-97-percent-2017-regular-season
Yet 3 of the top 5 most watched shows for the year were NFL Football.

Most-Watch Shows of the 2016-2017 Season
(Numbers are in millions of viewers)
1. Sunday Night Football (NBC) - 19.6
2. Thursday Night Football (NBC) - 16.9
3. NCIS (CBS) - 14.6
4. Thursday Night Football (CBS) - 14.5
5. The Big Bang Theory (CBS) - 14.0

Are you sure?

Are you sure?
from the article posted

The NFL RedZone also might be a factor in taking fans away from watching the daytime games on CBS and FOX. The NFL Network and DirecTV, which air separate versions of the show that broadcast live look-ins, have never shared viewership numbers.

yeah the NFL still has great numbers respective to other shows.

I think that link you showed was for 2016 NFL numbers, not 2017 numbers but I am sure it is still relatively the same for 2017.

Also, I think that list is also only for OTA channels   Shows like Walking Dead and Game of Thrones draw bigger numbers than some of the shows on that list

Since their numbers are close in terms of viewers in the post above, I wonder what a 30 second ad spot goes for on NCIS vs one on CBS' Thursday game.

just to note, ad rates are not set solely on total number of viewers, they are also strongly influenced by demographics.

The people selling products will pay more money if their target audience for a product is high even if the total numbers are lower.

Oh, I know. That's partly why I compared those two in addition to the # of viewers, as I'd guess NCIS' demo skews a bit older

Sunday Night Football was the most watched program last year.  It was ahead of  the Walking Dead which is most likely losing even more viewers than the NFL.  Game of Thrones has big numbers but I think that show works a little different since you can watch it on the TV station or on any streaming device as long as you pay for HBO.  Sunday Night Football is almost always watched live on TV and is still the most watched show.  THAT'S HUGE.

Numbers may be down but the NFL still dominates the market.

I'm just blown away that NCIS is rated that high.  Is there some neilson bot or something that has scammed the ratings?

I mean, Game of thrones has 1.2M subscribers on reddit, and today, more than a year from the next airing has 1300 people online at this very moment just browsing the sub.

NCIS has 3711 subscribers, total.  Something apparently aired last night and there are 12 people online.

So yeah, I'm going with this being sort of a Murder She Wrote type situation.

Yea. Everybody watching is over 80. Sure their commercials are almost worthless. Just allows cbs to do that #1 network shtick.

I agree w/ the old people comment, but its like the 50+ demo...  baby boomers.  A key demographic for advertisers.

Also, that 50+ demo is not as active on reddit, at least around TV discussions.

Shows like GOT thrive partly because of the way reddit (and the rest of the Internet) like to dissect every piece of the show for months on end.

NCIS is attracting grandmas that think Mark Harmon is cute, but are looking at quilting sites online the next day (this describes my mom, a big NCIS fan).

Best time of the NFL season starting tomorrow.

Always enjoy the post season through the conference titles. Then it all goes to hell with the typically crappy over hyped BS of the corporate party known as The Super Bowl (although we have had some compelling ones the last few years with the Giants, and Patriots).

Let's see how bad they **ck up the post season with endless replays and discussions of what constitutes a catch.

Fingers crossed they just let them play.

And my post was pretty much anti-politics, so it doesn't belong in that forum at all, but I get your meaning. I'm done here.
