My go to is good old fashioned Pepperoni and Mushroom. With that said I have had some BBQ chicken pizza that was pretty good but you are pushing the line pretty hard at that point.

 
Put whatever you want on a pizza. Toppings are awesome and there's some great combinations you can come up with. To me, a ziti slice is one of the best things on the planet.

But I wouldn't put that up against your favorite plain slice and try and make an argument that it is "better" than yours. They're entirely different foods. Just like deep dish and NY-style are different. If an alien shows up and you put both pies in front of it, there would be a lot of confusion that the two are the same thing.

If it doesn't have at least two (preferably three) of the following, it isn't pizza worth eating:

1) pesto

2) chicken

3) goat cheese

4) argula

5) shaved fennel

6) sun-dried tomatoes

7) walnuts

8) garlic olive oil drizzle

I think the vast majority of NYC bagels are incredibly overrated. They've gotten smaller and denser over time and the density is the big issue. Blast me all you want, but there are places in Jersey that do a much better job giving you the crispy exterior and the soft, fluffy interior.

People that like 18 toppings on their pizza probably can't get good pizza. The toppings help obscure the fact that the pizza they're eating is dog s###.

Also, chicago blues is garbage. Was up there on business last year and had a buddy drag me out for their best BBQ (you gotta be kidding me) and the best blues joint in town (again, you gotta be kidding me). I actually talked to one of the guys in the band after the show (the only one who would get a starting gig on beale street) and talked about it. Blues scene there is garbage. :(

Chicago Pizza = casserole plan and simple

It tastes good, but its not pizza. I love danish and donuts too, but they arent the same things.

What you guys don't seem to understand is that if the pizza is truly excellent, toppings tend to obscure, rather than amplify that brilliance. Bacon and cheese are probably two of the most delicious things on earth, but if I go to Del Frisco's or Peter Luger, I'm not going to get a porterhouse and then ask them to pile bacon on it and smother it with cheese. Alternately, a good BLT is perfect as is and wouldn't be enhanced by sticking a 6 oz filet mignon in the middle of it.

When something is TRULY excellent, less really is more.

Truth. Going for some next week before a college basketball game. Wife and I love it. I've tried 1 slice of BBQ chicken and liked it, but haven't sought it out.

I got dragged there with the family a couple of weeks ago while visiting my brother down at college. A member of our party ordered one of their "pizzas". It had pears and a salad on top of it.

I was really in the mood for pizza that day, but I refused to order a "pizza" from CPK because then the terrorists win. I ordered some crappy pasta dish instead.

I'll give them credit for their appetizers. They had some spring rolls and dumplings (again, not something that should be on the menu at a "pizza" place) that were pretty tasty.

As far as toppings go, I think anything more than 2 (and even that's pushing it) is absurd. If there's a sauce on there other than tomato sauce (BBQ sauce, buffalo sauce, ect) it really isn't truly pizza anymore. It might be tasty, but its a different food.

Don't even get me started on white "pizza". :wall:

Fact: My father (born and raised in Queens) opened the first new york style pizza place in the state of Kansas when he was in graduate school. He and his roommate ran it lean and mean (lunch only, limited menu) and stole most of the dishes and silverware from other restaurants. It only lasted like 6 months. The locals didn't "get it".

Don't think of the Buffalo chicken as 'pizza'. Much like the Chicago deep dish, its not pizza but its still good.

EG, I know you've posted before about your Jersey past (Seaside boardwalk)...ever have DeLorenzo's Trenton tomato pie?

Just to clarify further, I'm not trying to take a crunch on buffalo chicken pizza or BBQ chicken pizza. Taste is a subjective thing. Someone saying : "I ate a slice of buffalo chicken pizza and I liked it" is not a statement that can be disputed.

What I'm saying is that if you order a buffalo chicken pie and a plain pie from the same pizzeria and you prefer the chicken pie to the plain pie? Then it's likely that the pizza is dog s###.

I had a friend in Utah that I brought with me to NYC on one of trips back, he'd never been there before. First thing he wanted to do was get real NYC pizza. I went to take a whiz and when I got back, he'd ordered a broccoli and chicken slice. I cursed myself for leaving him alone. Half way through it, he finally said what he was thinking the whole time he was eating it : "I don't see what all the fuss is about." I calmly explained his ordering mistake and sent him back to the counter to fetch himself a plain slice. He came back, took one bite.....and a look came over his face. He smiled at me, voraciously took another bite, nodded, swallowed and then said to me : "NOW I get it...."

Agreed, hopefully my last post helps to further clarify what I meant. And hell yes I have - I find them to be delicious. For the record, I also love Chicago style deep dish. LOVE it. It truly is just a different animal and comparing it to NY style pizza is kind of absurd.

I know all about Eli's (although it's been years since I've been there) and it's exactly the type of NJ bagel that I think kicks the #### out of the vast majority of NYC bagels. Bagel World further up on 9 is pretty awesome too, same with their Marlboro location.

This pizza debate jumped the shark when California Pizza Kitchen entered the convo...

This debate is about dough, cheese, & sauce, not how much #### you can put on the actual pizza.

Speaking of which, do they make Nutella pizzas outside of New York? I had the greatest Nutella pizza ever last month , which is pretty much crispy dough, bananas, powdered sugar & Nutella - best pizza style desert ever!!

Clearly you have never enjoyed the brilliance of the pear, goat cheese, arugula and walnut on gluten-free dough.
California Pizza Kitchen is more of a substitute for a sandwich than pizza.
You sound like one of those rubes who thinks pizza should have a red sauce on it.
Nobody on Earth brings salad fennel apricot pizza into a NY/Chi pizza debate, so I have to assume you're :fishing:

I remember I was talking with some lady and she told me she didn't see the big deal about New York pizza. She said it tasted no different than the pizza she got out in Indiana. I was floored. As we went deeper into the conversation, she said she got a pizza from Domino's while in New York and it tasted exactly like the pizza she gets at her local Domino's in Indiana. :mellow:

I know all about Eli's (although it's been years since I've been there) and it's exactly the type of NJ bagel that I think kicks the #### out of the vast majority of NYC bagels. Bagel World further up on 9 is pretty awesome too, same with their Marlboro location.
Bagel World kicks ### too. I grew up walking distance from Eli's, so that was always my go to. Stopped off back in May and grabbed a salt and a garlic on my way to Great Adventure from NYC - first time I've had one in about 11 years and it was just delightful.

California Pizza Kitchen is more of a substitute for a sandwich than pizza.

Just to clarify further, I'm not trying to take a crunch on buffalo chicken pizza or BBQ chicken pizza. Taste is a subjective thing. Someone saying : "I ate a slice of buffalo chicken pizza and I liked it" is not a statement that can be disputed.

What I'm saying is that if you order a buffalo chicken pie and a plain pie from the same pizzeria and you prefer the chicken pie to the plain pie? Then it's likely that the pizza is dog s###.

I had a friend in Utah that I brought with me to NYC on one of trips back, he'd never been there before. First thing he wanted to do was get real NYC pizza. I went to take a whiz and when I got back, he'd ordered a broccoli and chicken slice. I cursed myself for leaving him alone. Half way through it, he finally said what he was thinking the whole time he was eating it : "I don't see what all the fuss is about." I calmly explained his ordering mistake and sent him back to the counter to fetch himself a plain slice. He came back, took one bite.....and a look came over his face. He smiled at me, voraciously took another bite, nodded, swallowed and then said to me : "NOW I get it...."

I remember I was talking with some lady and she told me she didn't see the big deal about New York pizza. She said it tasted no different than the pizza she got out in Indiana. I was floored. As we went deeper into the conversation, she said she got a pizza from Domino's while in New York and it tasted exactly like the pizza she gets at her local Domino's in Indiana. :mellow:
Good God. Reminds me of Michael Scott in the "Office" episode where they send him to corporate and he's talking about how he can't wait to get a slice at his "favorite NY pizza joint" and then they show him going into the Sbarro across the street from MSG. :lmao:
