A man being questioned in connection with the fatal shooting nearly a week ago of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO in New York City was found Monday in Pennsylvania with a gun with a suppressor like the one used in the homicide, law enforcement officials briefed on the situation tell CNN.

The 26-year-old was picked up at a McDonald’s in Altoona after an employee thought he looked like the man in New York Police Department photos and called police, the sources said. He had fake IDs, including one NYPD believes was used by the killing suspect in New York, they said.


Altoona police responded to the call, picked up the man and searched him, the sources said. The man also had some documents investigators want to examine as potentially relating to motive, though further details on them were not clear.

Altoona police are waiting for NYPD detectives, who are en route.

If he still has that piece on him he immediately goes from one of the smartest criminals ever to one of the dumbest.

There's a simple explanation why the firearm wasn't ditched. He planned on using it again.

That could also lead to why the gun jammed on him initially after he fired the weapon.

Yeah - I don't get that part. Especially if the gun is just 3D printed, meaning there's very little that could tie him to the gun even if it was found. Why not just gradually disassemble it and drop parts in various bodies of water as you crossed NJ and eastern PA? The only way a ghost gun bites you is if you leave fingerprints or if you actually have it on you when you're caught.

Seems like an extremely intelligent guy who could have really done some positive things for this world. I’m curious to hear more about his motives.

Obviously went wrong and thought he was smarter than the police.

I'm no attorney but I think they could say the crime was meant to intimidate and classify it under domestic extremism. Maybe they could charge him with something to do with the Patriot Act? I don't know.

There is a federal murder statute that is used in limited circumstances, one or more of which might apply here. There's also a federal death penalty that is rarely used. I don't have any special knowledge or experience with this but expect NY will want to keep this in their courts, which probably means a plea and something like 20 years in prison. I read he went to a toney private high school and then Ivy, so probably has some money behind him if he wants to defend the charges.

I posted a link to this podcast earlier regarding an eye in the sky surveillance system that has been extremely effective, for example in terrorism attacks or rooting out gang hideouts and such. The beauty of this rather simple tech is they can not only follow the perps forward in time to find them, but can also go back in time to see where they came from, who they associated with, where those people went and who they associated with, etc.

The ugly part of that surveillance system is that it doesn't identify and label "Perp". It just surveils everyone within view.
I haven't seen any indication it played any part in his arrest, though. But I'm glad they've caught him.

yes - this type of surveillance program has repeatedly been found unconstitutional and not in use anywhere in the US as far as I know

These are banned by federal law but there is a case pending that was argued before SCOTUS last month - Garland v. VanDerStok. There could be federal court jurisdiction based on the gun I suppose.

The guy was a valedictorian, but has the common sense of my garage door opener. Just because you can regurgitate stuff you read in a book doesn’t make you intelligent.
