NYC assassination news thread - Please no politics (1 Viewer)

Seems very promising now.

per CNN:

A man being questioned in connection with the fatal shooting nearly a week ago of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO in New York City was found Monday in Pennsylvania with a gun with a suppressor like the one used in the homicide, law enforcement officials briefed on the situation tell CNN.

The 26-year-old was picked up at a McDonald’s in Altoona after an employee thought he looked like the man in New York Police Department photos and called police, the sources said. He had fake IDs, including one NYPD believes was used by the killing suspect in New York, they said.

Altoona police responded to the call, picked up the man and searched him, the sources said. The man also had some documents investigators want to examine as potentially relating to motive, though further details on them were not clear.

Altoona police are waiting for NYPD detectives, who are en route.
If he still has that piece on him he immediately goes from one of the smartest criminals ever to one of the dumbest.
There's a simple explanation why the firearm wasn't ditched. He planned on using it again.
Yes but if that was his intent why not just purchase another weapon

I'm hoping this can be just about the actual active murder mystery and pursuit of the bad guy.

Joe and mods, please feel free to clip any funny business.

Please let's keep to the original post.

A man was murdered. It looks like another person is going to prison for a long time wrecking his life and those around him. Or possibly the death penalty.
New York doesn't have the death penalty.

He was staying in a hostel and using public transportation, I'm guessing he has limited funds.

There was a report out that this weapon might have been made from a. 3-D printer
That could also lead to why the gun jammed on him initially after he fired the weapon.

Kept the gun
Kept the fake ID

Seems unwise

Yeah - I don't get that part. Especially if the gun is just 3D printed, meaning there's very little that could tie him to the gun even if it was found. Why not just gradually disassemble it and drop parts in various bodies of water as you crossed NJ and eastern PA? The only way a ghost gun bites you is if you leave fingerprints or if you actually have it on you when you're caught.

ETA...unless there was a 2nd target he was making his way to...

It's strange... He must've wanted to be caught. Could've gone to ground somewhat easily and avoided capture for a bit- unless money was that tight.

Avoiding joking about the monopoly money... But wth was up with the monopoly money?

Definitely looks like the right guy and based on some of the internet sleuthing I’ve read it fits even more.

Seems like an extremely intelligent guy who could have really done some positive things for this world. I’m curious to hear more about his motives.

Just guessing he was told his whole life how smart he was. Got the Ivy League education.

Obviously went wrong and thought he was smarter than the police.

I think the Monopoly money was to make it seem like he was having fun and taunting the police.

Now he can spend a very long time in jail.

So let me get this straight...
1st Starbucks and then McDonald's?
Not exactly inconspicuous places where nobody will see you.
1st places I'd obviously visit were I an anti-capitalist.
I wouldn't say he's an anti-capitalist from what I've seen. Just upset at the insurer for how they dealt with a family member. I'm sure we'll get all the info at some point.
I saw something about anti-corporate...

Will he face federal charges? Could he be looking at life in Supermax?
Why federal? Not saying no, because I have no idea... just curious.

I was assuming NY state murder and associated things like the gun.
I'm no attorney but I think they could say the crime was meant to intimidate and classify it under domestic extremism. Maybe they could charge him with something to do with the Patriot Act? I don't know.

Some serious eyebrows on that guy.

Put me in the group that thinks he wanted to get caught. He was probably loving all the media attention this got over the past few days and now loves that his name is out there.

If he wanted to be caught, why run at at all?

Although schizophrenics tend to be less violent than the general population, he's the right age for an initial psychotic break. He may be delusional. Or manic.

Add to the intrigue. If he was caught day 1, he would’ve have all “support” he has now.

There is a federal murder statute that is used in limited circumstances, one or more of which might apply here. There's also a federal death penalty that is rarely used. I don't have any special knowledge or experience with this but expect NY will want to keep this in their courts, which probably means a plea and something like 20 years in prison. I read he went to a toney private high school and then Ivy, so probably has some money behind him if he wants to defend the charges.

With all of the support he has gotten over the last week I am curious what the chances are that he gets a sympathetic jury

I posted a link to this podcast earlier regarding an eye in the sky surveillance system that has been extremely effective, for example in terrorism attacks or rooting out gang hideouts and such. Not useable in the US due to our pesky 4th amendment, although Dayton, Ohio tried it for a while before getting sued. https://radiolab.org/podcast/eye-sky-2306

The beauty of this rather simple tech is they can not only follow the perps forward in time to find them, but can also go back in time to see where they came from, who they associated with, where those people went and who they associated with, etc.
The ugly part of that surveillance system is that it doesn't identify and label "Perp". It just surveils everyone within view.
I haven't seen any indication it played any part in his arrest, though. But I'm glad they've caught him.

super assassin, evading police for days, turns up in a McDonald's.... with the murder weapon on his hip? open-carry for everyone to see?

man, reddit is going to implode if this turns out to be the guy and he was this openly clumsy
Mcgriddles have that pull on some people
Maybe he heard the McRib was back?
We really need the laugh emoji.

yes - this type of surveillance program has repeatedly been found unconstitutional and not in use anywhere in the US as far as I know

The guess is it was a homemade/make at home weapon.
The article on the WaPo said it was a ghost gun.
What’s that ?
3d printed gun that is untraceable or a gun put together from spare type parts also untraceable

These are banned by federal law but there is a case pending that was argued before SCOTUS last month - Garland v. VanDerStok. There could be federal court jurisdiction based on the gun I suppose.

I gotta think that the press this case is getting, NYC throws a ton of weight behind it and no chance thy settle on a plea.

I’m so behind the times and have trouble comprehending people making guns that work on 3D printers. Unreal.

A ghost gun is not necessarily a 3-D printed gun. By definition, it’s a gun that wasn’t created by a gun manufacturer. It doesn’t have a serial number.

Building a gun with parts there were made by a 3-d printer is pretty much exactly how you put together any other gun made with normal parts.

What part of or a gun made from parts wasn't clear ;)

The guy was a valedictorian, but has the common sense of my garage door opener. Just because you can regurgitate stuff you read in a book doesn’t make you intelligent.

Something a few of us should think about.

The part about putting a gun together with spare parts being a ghost gun.

The receiver is not stamped with a serial number. The parts, how and where they’re made doesn’t matter.
