***Official 2013 NLCS Thread: St. Louis vs. Los Angeles (1 Viewer)

So looking forward to tomorrow's game.
High stakes. Cards win means they don't have to beat Greinke or Kershaw to close out the series. Dodgers win means they don't have to beat Waino again. Looking forward to it. Both teams are pitching so well, every friggin' hit is a big deal. Great stuff.

That was a rough one - couple of really bonehead plays by the Cardinals tonight - especially for Jay. Should have been a 1-0 loss - Ryu was really mixing it up well and right when the Cards had him second guessing some things they run out of an inning. Insane games where the big name pitchers are left holding the bag while their teams can't help back up the performances and the second billing pitchers are pitching some fantastic games as well.

It's hard to win if you don't score

Which is why the Descalso play was so poor - every run is at a premium in this series. Can't give them away like Jay/Wong did and can't run out of them. Surprised by the gaffes tonight - however usually during the season after a crazy game the team responded with a good win.

Holliday has to get untracked.

There was some scuttlebutt the Dodgers would go Grienke in game 4 if they lost, but now we get Nolasco. Need a miracle...

Ryu was sensational tonight, he'll be ok if we get to a game 7.

They're going to have to pitch Nolasco at some point. Might as well do it tonight and have Greinke and Kershaw rested.
This. It may be their only chance to throw him in a non-elimination game AND it allows Greinke and Kershaw to get to 100%. Winning yesterday's game was big for the Dodgers (obviously). Greinke, Kershaw, and Ryu on full rest is what I would want lined up for 5, 6, and 7.

If Greinke isn't starting, Mattingly should be fired before he hands in the lineup card.
Mattingly should have been fired months ago for batting Mark Ellis higher than seventh.

On the pitching side, his team's best chance of winning the series is Greinke and Kershaw on full rest in Games 5 and 6, and bank that anything can happen in a Game 7. Without Craig, STL is a little more vulnerable to lefties, so let a solid LHP start Game 7 and have the weakest starter pitch Game 4 at home against the opponent's weakest starter.

Putting a middle infielder with bat control in the #2 slot regardless of OBP is a baseball tradition that's been around longer than rosin bags.
I understand. If I somehow was able to use the 2013 Dodgers cards during my Strat-O-Matic Fanatic phase in the early 1980s, I would have hit Mark Ellis #2 as well. But that's the logic of a grade school kid to scared to talk to girls playing Strat in his basement without the baseball knowledge breakthroughs of the last 30 years.

If Mattingly was managing the Cardinals, he would have Jay batting leadoff, Carpenter second, and Beltran 5th or 6th. In other words, Mattingly would be trailing 2-1 in this series with either roster.

Puig is an incredible raw talent - but when you show up the pitcher there are likely repercussions. That said - how insane that he went into homerun trot - and STILL beat out a triple. Guy has sick talent.

But it was OK for Yadi and Wacha to act like 20,000 volts got passed through their bodies after striking out Puig and Uribe with the bases loaded in game 2?

He's a kid who had the biggest hit of his life on the biggest stage he's ever been on. This kind of bull#### is among the reasons baseball is a dying sport.

And how have those TV numbers been? Comparing favorably to, say, the NFL these days?
Apples and oranges. Plus, in 20 years the NFL will be touch football.
And baseball will be hockey.
Just stop. Baseball is not a regional, niche sport. Nor does it face the competition for viewership that the NHL does because of the time of year it is played. Baseball owns the summer in the sporting world. That won't change.

That's exactly what it's becoming. People will watch their own team, but how often do most people watch a game just because it's on? There are about 15 cities that care an awful lot about baseball, and they're going to attend games no matter what. The rest will support their team when their team is good. At some point, the fact that nobody else seems to give a damn about the sport is going to catch up with them. Ratings can only decline for so long before TV revenue follows suit.

You're underestimating the value of 162 games worth of live content to local cable sports networks. This is where TV revenues are coming from, not from Fox and TBS. It's the major reason why the Dodgers can support a $220M payroll.

The equivalent for Wacha/Yadi would have been throwing or slamming a mask or glove after taking the count from 3-0 to 3-2.

Back in the day when it wasn't a dying sport - Gibson or Drysdale would have thrown a heater right into the rib cage of a Puig after that kind of display.

Don't be ridiculous. Gibson and Drysdale didn't give up triples.

Oh, I know why he did it. I can't say I blame him for doing it. If I were on the mound and the situation arose though I might let a pitch slip inside on him to remind him to respect the game. Not to hurt him, just to send a message. It is part of the game regardless of how unseemly it may be. Actions have consequences. Hell I would consider throwing at a pitcher who was nuts as well. You don't like Wacha pumping his fist - well the beauty of the NL is he has to bat. Send a message.

Baseball dying? Please. Unless those nancy soccer fans have there way, baseball will always be around. The way they are softening up football, I LOVE baseball's chances.

"Holliday swings and sends one towards South America... Crawford will need a visa to catch this one... It's gone and there's nothing left but a vapor trail."

Series didn't end on the field. It ended prior to the game when Mattingly made his way out to home plate with the lineup card listing Nolasco as starting pitcher.

You do have to wonder where the series would be at right now had the Dodgers cheated and broke Beltran's rib in his first at bat, rather than the Cards doing it to the Dodgers' best hitter.

The Dodgers are using the same mega-shift the Pirates used against him. I wonder if that gets into a hitter's head. Last night he hit a wormburner into right field, but Eliis was playing so deep he was able to make a play on it and throw Adams out at first. In the Pirates series, he hit several liners/hard grounders right at the mega shifted SS on the right side of the infield, all balls that would have been singles against a standard defensive alignment.

Well ego is what gets guys to this level I guess - but if he learned to push bunt and bunted a few times up the 3B line then maybe it could prevent the shift. It boggles my mind why players are comfortable hitting into outs instead of modifying their swing mechanics to allow them to use all fields.
