I wasn't defending McCarthy.
I think they're ahead of the curve in terms of quantifying player value. Maybe moreso than they were 10 years ago, even.Bigboy10182000 said:How the F do the A's do what they do?

Nuno is just a younger, blacker, less twitter savvy McCarthy. Are you new to Brandon McCarthy? It's like you guys don't even know where the Yankees play. Nuno has given up 15 HRs this year. 13 of them came at Yankee Stadium. Are you new to the Yankees? They really gave up on Nuno way too fast, esp for an OK-ish rental.
Yup. They're ahead of the curve in a lot of ways. I can't find the article right now for some reason but the latest thing someone ID'ed was that they obtain extreme fly ball pitchers, who generally have a slightly lower BABIP but obviously give up more HRs, and they get quality defensive OF guys, so the end product in their huge park is a significant edge. They're a ridiculous 30-15 at home this year, and their staff has the second-lowest BABIP in the league at .270 after having the second-lowest one on the league last year at .276. Next level stuff.I think they're ahead of the curve in terms of quantifying player value. Maybe moreso than they were 10 years ago, even.Bigboy10182000 said:How the F do the A's do what they do?
Having a small payroll is freeing, in some aspect. If something's not going right, they can change it. They're not locked in to the same roster for the next 5-6 years like some of the mega-teams.
I'm sure they didn't expect them to be this good, but their scouting department obviously liked something about them. They deserve credit for seeing value that others didn't. And in the case of Donaldson their scouting department and system deserve credit for makings the guys traded for Donaldson good enough to garner an elite prospect in a deadline trade. The A's definitely know what theyre doing regarding Starting Pitching. But I also think they kind of lucked into Josh Donaldson & Brandon Moss and theyd be the first ones to admit that.
They've somehow made it work but I still think their payroll is a major disadvantage. They're forced to be very selective about who they keep and they have to constantly churn their roster in order to maximize value. They also have little margin for error. A single bad deal like Eric Chavez' can cripple a club for years.I think they're ahead of the curve in terms of quantifying player value. Maybe moreso than they were 10 years ago, even.Bigboy10182000 said:How the F do the A's do what they do?

The other thing I read recently was that they also have prioritized fly-ball hitting batters as well. Guys like Donaldson, Moss, Reddick, Lowrie, etc.Yup. They're ahead of the curve in a lot of ways. And that's just one thing someone was able to ID recently. Gotta figure for everything some outsider picks up there's five things that no one else has sorted out yet.
Was just about to post my Hot Sports Take about this acquisition.Yankees make a move and pick up Jeff Francis from the A's.
He's an adequate rotation replacement for Tanaka. Was just about to post my Hot Sports Take about this acquisition.Yankees make a move and pick up Jeff Francis from the A's.
I really wish they would start trading for prospects and rebuild the right way. Focus everything on 2016 with Tanaka coming back and Betances as your closer. Blow everything else up.Yankees make a move and pick up Jeff Francis from the A's.
Hard to trade some of those huge contractsI really wish they would start trading for prospects and rebuild the right way. Focus everything on 2016 with Tanaka coming back and Betances as your closer. Blow everything else up.Yankees make a move and pick up Jeff Francis from the A's.
I agree but I think they can get something for Kuroda & Robertson.Hard to trade some of those huge contractsI really wish they would start trading for prospects and rebuild the right way. Those guys aren't going to bring huge returns and the organization isn't deep with pitchers. They're close enough in both the division and wild card races that blowing things up doesn't make any sense. The Yankees don't have a lot of trade assets but they do have more ability to take on toxic contracts than just about any other club.I agree but I think they can get something for Kuroda & Robertson.Hard to trade some of those huge contractsI really wish they would start trading for prospects and rebuild the right way. He has a .645 OPS against lefties. So corey dickerson is in a platoonn again?
so yes?He has a .645 OPS against lefties. So corey dickerson is in a platoonn again?
The Braves organization has a pretty good record with developing pitchersMan the braves pulled a joba on wood. Think these geniuses can let a guy pitch?
thought he had a nagging injury?so yes?He has a .645 OPS against lefties. So corey dickerson is in a platoonn again?

Yeah, was surprised to see this when looking at ISO leaders at 2B.What is up with Sean Rodriguez suddenly hitting homers?
ETA- previous high for HR in season was 9 in 118 games(2010). In 2014 has 9 in 57 games.
Wasnt he good for a year in Cinci or was that someone else?I don't think Stubbs is ever going to sit vs a lefty in coors
478/519/761
Pretty damn good vs righties up there too
Nice work.A's get to Felix early. One run might be enough for Samardzija.
Donaldson was a first round pick out of Auburn that mashed early on with the Cubs, then hit a bit of a roadblock in 2008 in A ball, which is when the A's pounced in the Harden deal. The same thing happened (to some extent) with Derek Norris, he's always raked in the minors. The A's definitely know what theyre doing regarding Starting Pitching. But I also think they kind of lucked into Josh Donaldson & Brandon Moss and theyd be the first ones to admit that.
So why were you so sure that the A's would be the first ones to admit that they lucked into him? Do you just make stuff up on the fly?Yeah I had no clue donaldson was a first rounder. Wow thanks for the info.
I don't know if the Norris trade has worked out that well for the A's. He's been solid, but he's also about all they have to show for giving up Gio Gonzalez, who is still under a favorable contract with the Nats, since the others haven't amounted to much.Donaldson was a first round pick out of Auburn that mashed early on with the Cubs, then hit a bit of a roadblock in 2008 in A ball, which is when the A's pounced in the Harden deal. None of those guys are ever sure things, but I would imagine that Oakland's front office is pretty good in finding the guys who have a better chance than average of breaking out.
Yes. He's taken time to learn how to pitch instead of just using the gas he did forever. I bought everywhere this year, and was admittedly frustrated a month or so ago, but he's now doing what I thought he'd be doing all year. Glad I stayed patient with him.Lincecum has been unreal. Is this level of production sustainable?

Then fix your confirmation bias problems. You're looking for stuff like the above, so you comment anytime it happens, but gloss over when it's not because it doesn't fit the story you've already written in your head.We read the same baseball forum with 50 dudes in it. People are allowed to post their opinions on here despite what you may think message board cop. Why dont you just block me and move on? Do you just make stuff up on the fly?Yeah I had no clue donaldson was a first rounder. Wow thanks for the info.
