This is going to be unpopular, but I think we need to sit Deuce and anyone else that was injured in the last game. Klinsmann spent the last 3 years broadening the player pool for a game just like this. The field was kinda crappy in the Italy-England game, plus it will be hot and humid. This game sets up well to run the other side off the pitch, but that means we can't risk starting players that might need to be removed due to injury. Start the fittest players and play route 1 football all day.
Nope. Rest against Germany, assuming a win against Portugal. Best chance to pick up points is Sunday, don't waste that opportunity looking ahead.
I think the best chance to get points is to run them off the pitch. Even down Pepe, Portugal is the more talented side. They're best starters have already had to play 45+ minutes down a man in the tournament. And the location will not be conducive to beautiful football - its in the damn rainforest.

Reality is... they'll need to play like their lives depend on it in both games.
I like route one more than most on this board but the US doesn't have the personnel to play that style effectively. Even if Altidore is healthy, he's not really a target man.

Unless Deuce is physically unable, I think Klinsmann has to play who and what got them here. Flipping tactics to something completely unfamiliar has more risks than potential benefits.

Not if we can squeeze out a win against Portugal (and Germany does not lose to Ghana).

In that case, I would rest anyone sitting on a card, or with a nagging injury, against Germany.
um... I said "reality".

I am at work with no futbol. Anyone have a non youtube link to the goals?

Thx
there were pretty good quality GIFs posted in this thread.
The ESPN gamecasts that show the shots/goals also have the videos. If you click on the circles with the triangles in them it will cut to a 10 second video.
We just "upgraded" to IE 9 and none of the links above or the circles will work. Billion $ IT budget.

i wish i knew what a handball was. Seems like that is usually a "ball to hand, unintentional, its only a yard how can he move" non call

dont get me wrong, hand away from body, to me its a handball

Tough call on the handball - arms were extended though. I saw a play with David Luiz in yesterdays game where he put pressure the player with the ball with his hands behind his back to guard against just that scenario.

All defenders are taught to do this now but it is obviously pretty hard from a balance point of view.

The writers for the 2014 world cup have heard the Americans' demand for more scoring and are complying. Credit to them

First time I've seen the captain's armband not go to the sub. Does it make a difference who wears it after the captain leaves the game?

So with no RVP, who do the Dutch play up top next game? I'd assume Huntelaar, but Lens has been the preferred sub and they also have Kuyt.

Too bad they can't trade any of those guys for a decent defender.

Updated :

No. The team choose whom ever they want. It is relatively meaningless.
As a former team captain, I would not say it is meaningless, but yeah, it does not have much meaning. Allows you to be a little more vocal with the official - but these days I see the officials putting up with crap from everyone. Back in my day most officials seemed to have very low tolerance for dissent.

Should be the vice captain, no?
It can be anyone they want. Every team deals with it differently. Even for teams who might have a vice captain, there is no assurances he would be on the field.

I meant it was meaningless who they give it to. It does not matter.

The rules about only the captain talking to the ref are never enforced.
