***Official 2014 World Cup Thread*** (1 Viewer)

A surprise omission from Germany's World Cup team, Max Kruse reached the final table at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas on Wednesday, finishing third in his event and winning 26,900 euros ($36,000).

Kruse, 26, had hoped to be representing his nation at the World Cup this summer, but was left off Joachim Low's provisional 30-man squad. Adding insult to injury, he was listed in the WSOP as "a former soccer pro."

Suarez buries a point blank header, Rooney smashed it off the crossbar. That could be the difference in who gets in and who is out. Ouch.

I'm watching on univision and I'm just gonna say it. The gooooooooooooooolllllllll schtick was old and played out by like the 3rd time.

It would be one thing if it was the dude's reaction to the goal every once in a while, but he does it every time and it pretty much always comes well AFTER he's gotten excited about the goal and said several other things (like the name of the guy who scored). Then like 15 seconds later it's like "oh yea, and I guess I have to add this on to the end.....gooooooooooooooooolllllll".

Caliente take, man.

Good for him, although I'd hardly call him a "surprise omission". Germany has some pretty good players.

Doesn't look good for England. There best attack seems to be countering with speed down the wing. If Uruguay packs it in, England won't be able to get those guys running with space nearly as much.

Godin was lucky not to get a red with the hand ball... there are refs who'd have run him for that. But Darke's right that the 2nd was also a yellow IMO.

As someone who doesn't know any of these announcers, who they are or who they root for, I have to say that these two guys seem like the biggest homers I've heard so far. And no one else is even close.

Ian really pushing the second yellow angle. Meh.
Yeah. I agree with him, but the way he's beating it into the ground is very homerish.

Pretty sure if he was neutral he'd have said something like "Godin should be more careful since he's already been booked" and never brought it up again.

I have no idea what this means.

Homers along with #### calls from the ref
Question: Had Sturridge rolled around the floor for two minutes and embellished the elbow, would the ref have given the second yellow to Godin?

People are dogging Jagielka, but if he drifts towards the far post Suarez cuts inside. Pretty hard to defend a world-class striker 1v1 when the pass is good and the passer is not under pressure.

Sadly - I think yes. Would have had to go full-blown "can't breath", but a little embellishment could have made that look more dangerous than it was.

Questionable calls. But every sport has questionable calls in every game. I've never heard anyone (other than Cris Collinsworth) go on about how bad a couple calls were in the NFL.

It was a big mistake by the ref, deserves mentioning. He gave the guy a forearm to the throat as he was attacking in a very threatening position.

It happens a lot, especially when it is a play that would have the level of impact that this missed call could have had.

Macca (the color guy) is no different than Twellman (color for US games) Both are former players and it is extremely difficult for them to not sound like homers.

Darke on the other hand should be professional enough to separate himself from his home country but that too is difficult.

At least we won't have to worry about Darke rooting for England during the knockout rounds

For some reason I think it's ok in WC play. It's not like they're unfair to Uruguay. If anything, the UK announcers are pretty critical of England.

UK guys were clearly pro-USA too the other day and will be again on Sunday. Doesn't bother me.

Pure objectivity may be a nice thing but may also be cultural too.

They can make a day of it in the Shark Pool.

Crazy: Suárez & Cavani were born 21 days apart in the same town (Salto) in a remote corner of Uruguay. Two of the world's best forwards.
