Sorry for another dumb question but you guys are super helpful.

How good are these WC teams compared to the club teams?

And I guess that ties to the next question of - is this the highest level soccer?

J
This year's Real Madrid could beat any of these teams easily except for Germany/Argentina imo

It's just so difficult to get these guys to click in such a short amount of time. There's not as much chemistry on national teams as there is on club teams.
Thanks.

J

Its an interesting question - but it comes down to practicality. These national teams generally get together a few times a year - usually for about a week. So, they simply do not have the time, nor the experience together to be really great teams.

Some of the teams have exceptional individual talent - but the top club teams in the world also have their pick of the best players from all countries - and they play/practice together for 10 months of the year.

They are all-star teams, so have lots of talent but not always a great team concept. I've always believed that a top club would beat a top national team more than they would lose, just because the club has more time training together and developing an identity, but I'm not overly confident of that opinion..

Always a chuckle to see how little respect Italy gets from folks.

It's actually unreal.

We're going to go off the handle massaging a German team that flops consistently, who played a great game (albeit against 10 men for most of the game)?

To this point, the only teams that have made a strong impression on me are Holland, Italy, Germany and Mexico.

That being said, I expect Holland to take a dip (their defense is nowhere as good as they looked), and Mexico likely wont get much further than out of the group.

But jesus... You guys need to give a lil respect to probably the most consistent team of the past decade or two and 2nd winningest in WC history

Teams like Germany, Spain, and Holland would probably fair pretty well - given that many of their players play together on their respective club teams.

The natural unevenness of talent distribution is also a problem for the national sides. Even strong countries with huge talent pools have problems producing world class players to fill a starting XI at any given time. There is usually a position or two where the talent or depth is less. That's much less of a problem for a club team who can shop for a position in the next transfer window.

The best club teams are better than the best national teams.

For the past 5 years or so, Barcelona has basically been the best parts of the Spanish National team + Messi. Now they've got Neymar as well. (plus a handful of other studs from other countries). In the champions league final a few weeks ago, Real Madrid brought Marcello (starting at LB for Brazil) off the bench.

Even if you eliminated the built in advantage of playing with eachother 10 months out of the year (as opposed to national teams, which basically get together for a week or 2 every few months) the talent at the elite clubs is superior to anything that 1 individual nation can put together at any one time.

reading. radio. tv.

hell, they're still 22-1 odds to win the WC. I mean... lets just look at their performances in the past 20 years in all comps. 2010 was a disaster, but that was 110% expected by everyone who wasnt named Lippi

Italian Soccer Team Practice: http://youtu.be/vl2F6P8bw9w
that was funny in the US about 8yrs ago when noone knew what the shape of a soccer ball was

the games speak for themselves. Italy arent even fractionally as bad at diving as a lot of teams

oh. They are not winning anything this year. 22-1 would be throwing your money away. I'd put them behind (in no particular order) Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Germany, France, Holland

Since I'm can't get my stream to load, how would the USMNT fare against the MLS Cup champions?
Assuming this is a legit question, the USMNT would easily beat, over a long series of games, the current MLS champs. The top two players on KC (current MLS champs) are Zusi and Besler. Both are important for US but I don't think anyone would call them top US Nat players.

The next best player on KC is probably Benny. I love him but he did not even make the US final 30.

The gap then just grows when you look at Cam, Fab, Bradley, Dempsey, Howard against the KC counterparts.

A more interesting question is US Nats vs MLS All Star team. That would be a great game.

For those that forgot, it was between US and SK during the draw. We had a 50-50 chance of being with Belgium, Algeria and Russia instead of what we got.
