***Official 2014 World Cup Thread*** (3 Viewers)

Nothing like watching 20th century genocidal maniacs and their post-war collaborators fight it out for the world's title in front of fanatically cheering crowds.

Can't wait to tune in and have nobody to root for except for the ball.
One of the countries in the World Cup final has a dark history connected to a ruthless dictator. They will play Germany.

If you guys are chomping to see some action and carnage after a defensive battle, tune into stage 5 of the Tour de France tonite.

Stupid me didn't adjust the the DVR for the extended pre-game show which push the start time of the game back (relative to the start of the program) and eventual caused me to miss the end of this classic.
is there a replay tonight?

I was following along a bit in the TdF thread... sounded pretty nutty/epic.
Replay every night on NBCSN, starts in ten minutes.

NBC Sports this evening. It will be replayed really late tonite too.

eta - It was epic. Even a non-cycling fan will enjoy the action from today.

 It would be better if they had to pedal with their hands...

I guess I'm rooting for Argentina.

I want German kids going to bed on Sunday night dreaming of someday playing for the United States instead of the World Cup champions.

Ok some evening World Cup Trivia courtesy of Twitter:

Real Madrid's Angel Di Maria (Argentia) and Sami Khedira (Germany) won the Champions League back in May. One of them will be lucky enough to also hoist the World Cup trophy on Sunday. Only two other players in history won the CL and WC in the same year. Who are they?

Ronaldinho?

Mattheus?

Van Gaal really blew it for Holland today.

Started two questionable players with fitness issues and was forced to make changes. Probably would have rather preferred Krul in net for pks - even after JVG stated himself that both other keepers were stronger in pk's than Cillejson (sp)

Not that the Dutch keeper blew the pks.....but Krul would have been preferred.

Oh, and throwing out Vlaar as your first pk taker. :puke:

I root for Germany, and think they should be pretty strong favorites.

Argie was held by a long in the tooth, beat up Dutch squad with their captain obviously in the middle of his period.

Germans are fully healthy. Should be a decided advantage.

Put me on the record of saying Germans win this convincingly.

I think the Germans win 3-1. Argentina looks really pretty mediocre out there.

Soccer kings -- is there any reason for Messi's recent struggles other than every team is challenging him with 3 guys as soon as he gets the ball? I just assumed he saw that all the time in club play, but I imagine that Barcelona is far more dangerous than Argentina.

I want Argentina to win. Their 4-0 loss in 2010 is on every Argentine's mind and could be repeated without surprise. What is the best game plan to not repeat that performance, besides Messi having the match of his career?

I think they will have to defend as well as they have in the last two matches. They gave up a total of 7 shots on goal against Belgium and the Netherlands and will need to remain as organized as they've been in the knockout round. Germany should want to take the game to them more, so hopefully Argentina will be able to successfully counterattack them and nick a goal or two against the run of play.

If Messi played for the US, they would have beaten Germany. Going against the grain and saying Messi leads the Argies to the promised land and finally banishes Maradona to the history books.
