I'm bored. Wish Chip would make a trade or something.
I know, I keep coming back to check and no one has posted anything, and no new eagles news has come out.
I mean the draft is 2 weeks away today, just get here already!
Seems like a lot of ppl have us taking Safety round 1 and that he will still be there. Keep hearing he doesn't fit our scheme, but then some sites and mocks say he's a perfect fit so I'm unsure if I'd be incredibly happy landing the top S or not.
I'm not a scout so my information is second hand, but the knock on Collins is that he is more of an in the box safety and has coverage issues. Doesn't sound like the type of safety that our system requires. We'd be looking more at a CB who is a good tackler that we could convert to safety. Otherwise, I'd have to think the Eagles would have just signed Ward last year and been done with the position for awhile.
They're showing a ton of interest in Adrian Amos from Penn State. He looks like a guy who can be a target in the 3rd round. Great in coverage, S/CB experience, but the knock on him is run support. With the solid run D with the front 7, I think Amos would be a great target.
Other guys to consider are Eric Rowe (2nd/3rd) and Kurtis Drummond (not sure, I've seen him mocked from 2nd-5th). Josh Shaw is another guy who might be able to play safety. He played CB/S at times during USC - I'm not how sure his pool incident would fit with the "culture".
I'm not sure if they think of Byron Jones as a corner or safety - my gut says corner.
I'm starting to become a fan of going OT in round 1. The guys we brought in for "top 30 visits" who are first round guys are Lael Collins and TJ Clemmings. If both are gone (Clemmings might be available when we pick), I think we go with another position in round 2.
The other option based on needs in this draft is CB. Dave Spadaro recently said there are 5-6 corners in this draft who can do what we want out of the position. Byron Jones, Marcus Peters, Trae Waynes were mentioned specifically and will all be gone by round 2. Do we roll the dice we'll get someone later? I think it's a position of need since we're working out so many corners.
There are a few other players we worked out that are first round targetable like Shane Ray, but it doesn't look like he'll make it to us. Another thing I love about going OT in the first round is that we'll need multiple linemen for the future, so if another one falls to us later, we'll have the option of taking him as well. Ali Marpet in the 3rd jumps out at me if he's still available. He was another one of our top 30 visits.
Wide receiver has been a sexy pick in mocks, but I think it's our fallback plan in the first 3 rounds if a round-grade appropriate CB/OT/S/OLB is not available in the first few rounds. We already have 5 guys penciled in to make the team next year. Matthews, Cooper, Huff, Austin, Ajiritutu. We carried 6 last year, so six is likely this year as well. There will be a draftable WR available in every round like last year, and I think it's a second tier priority compared to the other positions, but a good fallback plan. My guess is if the board falls right, we'll end up with a fan favorite WR in the 4th/5th round like Chris Conley.
I want to make a list of the top 30 visits and prospects we talked to soon based on expected round availability and figure out what I think a solid draft will be for us based on who will be available when, and what the depth will look like in the subsequent rounds.
