Official 2016 GOP thread: Is it really going to be Donald Trump?? (1 Viewer)

“There is no war on women – there may be a war on what’s inside of women, but there is no war on women in this country.”

- Ben Carson.

Quote of the year.

I don't get why that's so controversial. He's clearly talking about the fetus from a pro-life perspective. Not the most eloquent way of saying something along the lines of "We don't hate women, we just hate abortion" - but not crazy if you're pro-life.
"We're not at war with women, we're at war with their uteruses".

Doesn't sound any better to me.
No, he's saying the other side (pro-Choice) is waging the war. And I'm pretty sure you know that.
Wow, that's your spin?

Well lesseee:

- Carson has tied Trump in Iowa

- Fiorina is 3rd in Iowa - and yet can't get invited to the main CNN debate. That's ridiculous.

- The top 3 spots in the GOP in Iowa are held by non-politicians.

I'm gonna say there is some major anti-establishment sentiment going on right now in both parties.

Spin? Dude, I'm not conservative, Republican, anti-Choice or a Carson supporter. It's just obvious that's what he meant.

FFS, we don't need to start deliberately interpreting every politician's quote in the worst possible way this early in the process do we?

Fiorina should be happy she is on the outside looking in. She has started and should continue to push the anti-establishment narrative.

I have said it here or in the other thread...that Republican voters are madder than hell at the GOP leadership.

This could take all day, so I'll just cut to the chase. "Trump Supporter" <> "More Republicans"

There is no question they are a special breed though.

Actually despite how they worded the article... the survey was...

Public Policy Polling surveyed 572 usual Republican primary voters and 545 usual Democratic primary voters from August 28th to 30th.

Trump's beliefs represent the consensus among the GOP electorate. 51% overall want to eliminate birthright citizenship. 54% think President Obama is a Muslim. And only 29% grant that President Obama was born in the United States. That's less than the 40% who think Canadian born Ted Cruz was born in the United States

Bad news, those are Republicans. Trump supporters are even worse. Only Bush, Kasich, Christie, and "unknown" have 50% or more that thinks Obama was born in US.

Looks like I need to clarify. I'm not saying that they set out to simply poll Trump supporters. I'm confident that wasn't the goal. What I'm saying is that the group they got ended up being such and that group is a special breed.

Though I'll say, if the sane people are bailing and not really identifying as "republican" anymore, I can see this assertion being perfectly legit.

I find it incredible that the party of William F. Buckley (who I respected even if I disagreed philosophically) has reduced itself to this level of ignorance and idiocy.

That is nuts.

What I would have liked to have seen is a follow up question which asks of the number that said No to both, 'Do you think that Cruz/Obama should still be allowed to be President?'

A more meaningful poll would be from Cruz supporters. I'm surprised that 40% know who Cruz is, much less whether he was born here or not.

80% of the electorate are complete morons. Both sides.

Sand, it's not equal. I'm sorry but it isn't.

Currently the Democrats are divided between two people, Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton. You may dislike both of them, but neither one is crazy. They're both talking serious ideas. They're both serious people. Are their crazies and stupids within the Democratic party? Sure? But the Allen Graysons and Maxine Waters types don't get anywhere near the Presidential race, MUCH LESS LEAD IT!!

The Republicans right now are saddled with one nut after another. Name me a single reasonable Republican who isn't either rejected or completely despised by the Republican base. Go ahead, name one.

its all in there.

62% of Cruz supporters think Cruz was born in the US, 29% correctly identified he wasn't.

19% of Kasich supporters think Cruz was born in the US, 53% correctly identified he wasn't.

28% of Cruz supporter correctly identified that Obama was born in the US, 40% think he wasn't.

58% of Kasich supported correctly identified that Obama was born in the US, 13% think he wasn't.

If your implication is that once in office Republicans don't act nearly as crazy they sound when they're campaigning, you're correct. But that's only because their "establishment", reasonable leadership has (so far) held them in check. And guess what? The base HATES the leadership for that. The base doesn't want these crazies held in check, but free to pursue their loony ideas. That's why Donald Trump and Ben Carson are leading the pack. The Republican base has gone out of their collective minds, and there is NO comparison among the Dems. None whatsoever.

The world is changing quickly and it is causing a certain percentage of the population to be terrified and go off their rockers...enter Donald Trump and Ben Carson. They won't embrace change, they will resist it, they will bring us back to the 50s and the ever changing world won't affect them. The world is at our door you either get on board or be the last to leave the station

What do you think is so bad about the state of the nation? Things have been mostly good since Clinton took office and the country even survived Bush's ####up in Iraq.

Gilmore's answers were all 100% yes, no or unsure for every question. Unless I missed a question, he literally had one supporter

Big business comes first in just about everything. Where we should be protected, our government remains silent, where they have no business they are front and center. We have a debt that is increasing by the day while our infrastructure is crumbling around us.

What are the odds that a random sample of 572 Republican voters actually includes Jim Gilmore himself?
What's kind of funny is that when you go down to the favorability of the candidates, among Gilmore supporters, Gilmore is at 100% unfavorable.

I'm not really sure you can complain about the debt and the crumbling infrastructure in the same breath. Unless you're in favor of a significant tax increase- and as a staunch anti-government type I assume you're not- fixing one requires doing further damage to the other.

Why not? They are completely independent of each other. And I'm not anti-government by any stretch. I AM anti-incompetent. I don't have a problem increasing taxes if those increases go to things that will make this country better. Healthcare, our infrastructure, our military are all examples of areas where I think tax dollars should go.

Problem usually is, when they increase the taxes, the money goes to none of these sorts of things and the tax increases are because of money mismanagement. I have a problem with raising taxes because they need to bail themselves out of the mistakes they've made. On top of that, the tax increases usually trickle down to those who can least afford them. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

So you're saying don't raise taxes, just allocate existing revenue better than they've done so far. Fine. Sounds good to me.

The American Society of Civil Engineers estimates that we'd need to spend $3.6 trillion by 2020 to repair our infrastructure.

Here's the federal budget. Certainly some of that already goes to infrastructure, the bulk of the transportation and housing stuff for example and probably some of the military spending through the Corps of Engineers, so let's conservatively say that you need to find another $2.5 trillion over the next 5 years to reallocate to infrastructure. Where would you start?

Probably minority here, but lower taxes, creates more jobs, equals more tax base, equals more tax revenue. This of course can be argued forever.

I first identify the issues and categorize them based on severity. I don't know why this has to be done on a five year time table. They didn't get in this situation in 5 years, no idea why we have to be out in five years. I do away with our antiquated income tax model and shift to a consumption based tax. I'd cut back on our defense budget for a period of time. We are so far ahead of everyone else in the world, we can afford to do that.

And just out of spite, I cut the politician paychecks and their health benefits.....the amount would be a blip on the radar compared to our national debt but it's a message sent.

Obviously, this is spit balling (at best) but there are plenty of ways to begin getting out of the problem. There are three main components:

1. Monetary inflow

2. Monetary allocation

3. Monetary outflow

A sensible alteration to all three components seems appropriate to me but that means going against the grain (business and really rich people)

I find it incredible that the party of William F. Buckley (who I respected even if I disagreed philosophically) has reduced itself to this level of ignorance and idiocy.

In a single instance it's rarely equal. Look at entire bodies of work over time, the results of their actions and the state of the nation, then get back to me about how different they are.
Excluding Hillary I would agree with you.

Again I was referring to the masses, not the candidates.

I'm not really sure you can complain about the debt and the crumbling infrastructure in the same breath.
Of course we can. Obama had a huge opportunity to dramatically improve our infrastructure with stimulus spending. And, to be honest, he completely, utterly pissed that money away.

Trillion dollar stimulus...what happened?

It was a failure

What do you think is so bad about the state of the nation? Things have been mostly good since Clinton took office and the country even survived Bush's ####up in Iraq.
Big business comes first in just about everything. Where we should be protected, our government remains silent, where they have no business they are front and center. We have a debt that is increasing by the day while our infrastructure is crumbling around us.

I first identify the issues and categorize them based on severity. I don't know why this has to be done on a five year time table. They didn't get in this situation in 5 years, no idea why we have to be out in five years. I do away with our antiquated income tax model and shift to a consumption based tax. I'd cut back on our defense budget for a period of time. We are so far ahead of everyone else in the world, we can afford to do that.

And just out of spite, I cut the politician paychecks and their health benefits.....the amount would be a blip on the radar compared to our national debt but it's a message sent.
I used a five year time table because that's what the American Society of Civil Engineers used in their repair estimates. Its the number that was available.

Re the bolded: it's always amazing how people think free market principles don't apply in the public sector. If you don't like the current leadership in Washington this is pretty much the worst thing you could do to improve it.
