Official 2016 GOP thread: Is it really going to be Donald Trump?? (1 Viewer)

I absolutely love the fact that the moderate squishes who comprise the GOP establishment/elite are looking at Trump on one side and Cruz on the other and are literally pissing their pants because they can't find a candidate that will take them to the promised land.

#### those ### holes.

This should count for something. i.e. someone should choose him as their running mate since the "base" is too stupid to make him a frontrunner. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2015/08/25/john-kasich-is-the-most-popular-2016-republican-back-home-and-one-of-the-only-popular-ones/
Kasich or Cruz is likely to be Trump's running mate unless he thinks he can wrap up Florida with Rubio. Just from the debates we seen. I also think Trump might pick somebody not running for President right now...I really think Mitt Romney would make a fine VP to help temper the Donald and have a cool head in the room. Just my opinion...

Yeah but we've probably only had two moderates over the past 45 years, and those were the only two guys who got #### done. This country needs someone that appeals to both sides of the aisle, not the lunatic fringe encapsulated by Cruz and Sanders.

Forgive me, DD, but I am not sure I am familiar with your politics. I think you mean two moderate presidents in the last 45 years, right? Not two moderate GOP candidates for president?

Mitt won't play second fiddle. If he really wanted back in the game he would have jumped into this ####show. He'd be head and shoulders above this group.

Whoever mentioned Cavuto's suit should tune in now. Contrasting lines with the suits of Cavuto and Gowdy on air now.

Reagan was a liberal before he was a conservative. Agree in theory but also tired of the same old same old.

Reagan and Clinton, the rest got caught in a quagmire of partisan politics. LBJ was the last CINC that was able to bridge the two sides before them. Since we've had a bunch of guys who could not legislate properly because they simply lacked the political wherewithal to push through impactful legislation.

Under Reagan and Clinton the country prospered, that is the goal of POTUS. We as a people seem to require less these days which I don't understand.

Two stinky white rich guys running - everyone will love that ticket. Nothing like true class warfare

I think Trump would be very smart to give Kasich some strong consideration.

Ohio is a very important state not just electorally but also potential carryover with working class voters in both parties

He brings a lot of Washington D.C. experience and most importantly...budget/deficit issues

He has executive experience

He was raised catholic and has conservative bonafides

If Trump is truly going to be the nominee, then any of you that remain rational (re: anti-Trump) had better support Hillary. Because I don't think Bernie is going to beat him.

Current desire is to be the polar opposite of whoever is in power. Screw being a unifier, just oppose everything not aligned to your ideology.

I think Kasich would be very smart to refuse. Why should he dishonor himself, and his lifelong reputation?

One could hope Bernie beats her. Otherwise, Trump vs Hillary could elicit the largest 3rd party vote of our lifetime.

And in the end that's why I maintain Clinton wins. People are going to hope for a return to the mid 90s.

Ralph Nader is out next Prez?
I'd vote for him. Or Perot. A dead person would be less repulsive than Trump or Hillary.

Well, first I think he is a good man who really wants to make things better. I think he is also kind of a policy wonk.

I think he has established a track record of competency and that Trump has a record of delegating. In a Trump Administration, I could make an argument that Kasich could serve a unique role as VP and almost remake the position or expectations for the position.

He is 63 now...so...I don't see him serving as a president one day. So...this would be his chance.

You know...he talks a lot about his mail man father. It is late and I am kind of tired...so not sure how to word it...but I think there is something very very meaningful and important to him about the idea of the son of a mail man becoming a vice president or maybe even a president.

socialism vs. capitalism....that won't play well in the United States.
More like socialism vs fascism.

Also "socialism" is not a bad word, it's probably the most misunderstood word in America. See Sweden, Finland, Norway and Canada for standard of living and equity among the population. People seem to think socialism and communism are the same thing, which they are not.

But not with Donald Trump.

SIDA, a Trump nomination changes the nature of the Republican party, and not in a good way. Everything that was great about the party of Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Eisenhower and Reagan will be destroyed. It would be disgraceful for an honorable man like Kasich to work with Donald Trump.

the media and the GOP will play it capitalism vs. socialism...I'm guessing Bernie polls terribly vs. Trump.

Sanders supporters would not agree.

You and I are on to something Tim, others also seem to be picking up on it...the Trump and Sanders supporters, same folks IMO. Different issues and values but these are folks that don't always come to the polls and Trump will pull votes from both sides just like Clinton will.

People are going to make love to themselves thinking back to the mid 90s, but that's if Clinton can beat Sanders. If Bernie wins the first couple states, that could hurt Clinton a lot worse than if Cruz wins a state or two before Donald can flex on a Super Tuesday in March. All Sanders supporters need is a win in either of those first 2 states and then lookout because people are going to start coming out of the woods that you never knew were there.

The anti-establishment mindset is in full swing right now in America, that is scary to some folks.

Bernie and Cruz have about the same chance to get their nominations.

I know Capella thinks Trump has no shot, but he is the clear favorite on the GOP side right now. He's also a candidate that could pull centrists votes, Cruz and Sanders will not.

You hit the nail on the head, Dr. Detroit. As I see it, right now the Presidency of the United States is going to be one of 5 people: Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, or Marco Rubio. Forget current polling because it's completely irrelevant; here are the likely results:

Clinton vs. Trump: Narrow Ciinton victory

Sanders vs. Trump: Big Trump victory

Clinton vs. Cruz: Big Clinton victory

Sanders vs. Cruz: Toss up

Clinton vs. Rubio: Toss up

Sanders vs. Rubio: Big Rubio victory

Everyone could learn from this. There is a happy medium out there and it doesn't have to be all or not, feast and famine, you can design a system to allow business to flourish while still having safeguards in place to ensure that the folks who make these companies run are going to be well taken care of. We will not tolerate a CEO making $5M and a clerk suffers making $9.50 an hour in that same company. A few less dollars into the mighty 401k, so what? Start taking care of people or pretty soon they are going to come and take care of you, once and for all.

Corporate slavery, let's call it what it is.

I could see myself voting for Kasich. A big issue I don't agree with him on is his education stance. Funding needs to go up for many reasons but I'd hope he's be willing to compromise on that one issue. I don't mind his other stances but I don't love them either for the most part. I can not vote for any other GOP'er from this group. I don't see how anyone could.

I used the PBS issues page to identify where Kasich stands to compare with myself.

A lot of lefties on this board are still sleeping on this and think there is no way it will happen.

This crop of candidates is terrible. I wish Biden would have ran. Hell, i'd rather Romney and Gore would have been options as well.

So I've watched some of the debate highlights. What a ####### wimp Jeb Bush is: "Oh please Donald, please change your mind about Muslims; I really hope you do."

And Christie: "Mr President we're coming to kick your rear end out of the White House!" Totally classless. It's like Trump is an infection poisoning the rest of them.

Also very cagey of Trump to just let Cruz hang himself with his own words on NYC. Cruz playing for laughs and Trump looking stern and unsmiling waiting to lower the boom.

If Christie got elected, they would need a wrecking ball to kick his rear out of office...

I think I might have to face the reality that Trump is going to win this. My support for Rubio is fading a bit, Cruz is growing on me but it seems like it's all done but the counting.

Haven't looked recently (been focusing more on IA and NH), but last I checked, Bernie was beating Trump, Cruz, and Rubio in head to head polls.
