Official 2016 GOP thread: Is it really going to be Donald Trump?? (2 Viewers)

The problem for Cruz is that the general voter isn't as smart as Krauthammer. Indeed, their eyes glaze over when Cruz gets into wonkish policy details, etc.
Cruz is really a sharp guy, borderline brilliant.  I really don't think he appeals to the average American though, while Trump does because he's kind of a rabble-rouser and somehow relates to the everyday person.

Fox has taken the middle road pimping Rubio because Trump and Cruz are basically outside the norm.  This is why this election is such a brilliant window to the American soul, because we have some people in this race that are really different in the sense of what we know about politicians.  Cruz, Sanders, and of course Trump are really wildly outside what we think of as presidential.  But to me that's better than the establishment ilk, having something different isn't a bad thing right now IMO.

What was up with the hot dog behind the stage tonight? Looked like a giant hot dog behind Trump.
The Big Don riding around in this on the campaign trail would get my vote for sure...

Krauthammer said that Cruz won. Hence my response.
I think Cruz's problem is that he makes your average used car salesmen seem about as authentic and honest as Bernie Sanders. Of course much of this would be negated if he were to go up against Hillary in the general - she's pretty much the only other candidate on Cruz's level in the "insincerity" department. I shudder to think what a debate between those two would be like.

Cruz's problem is that he's almost comically unlikable.

I assume many are, but if you don't follow his old college roommate on twitter, you should. He's a great follow. From the last few minutes:

Craig Mazin @clmazin
I have no idea because the first thing I did after my last class of the week was GET THE #### AWAY FROM TED CRUZ. twitter.com/amandamwingle/…

Amanda @amandamwingle
.@clmazin I may regret asking this, but what did @tedcruz do on a typical Friday night in college?

Craig Mazin @clmazin
No. Ted has no empathy and desires to control people. He's a bad person, and I choose to spend my kindness on others twitter.com/PsmithSports/s…

PSmith @PsmithSports
.@clmazin did/do you ever feel bad for Ted? He seems awful, terrible, etc....but he also just seems like a huge loser with no friends.

Craig Mazin @clmazin
Ted has wanted to be President ever since his father told him that's what Jesus really, really wanted to happen. twitter.com/Melissa_D_2010…

theneverendingstory @Melissa_D_2010
@clmazin did Cruz always have political aspirations even in college?

Craig Mazin @clmazin
You're very kind. It was once my private trauma, but it turns out misery really does love company. WELCOME EVERYONE! twitter.com/TeacherALesson…

Leigh Simpson @TeacherALesson
Every time I watch @tedcruz on TV, I want to give @clmazin a hug, a drink and a free hour of therapy. I'm so, so sorry Craig. #GOPDebate

I thought the biggest takeaways from the night were Trump saying Planned Parenthood helps women and that he'd negotiate with Palestine. Two things you never thought you'd ever hear a republican candidate say. If he can say that during primary season and still win the nomination with ease then the party as we have known it is done. It's completely shocking that this guy is going to be the nominee.  Really the only misstep he's made is when he got Palin to endorse him before Iowa. She gives that speech and he loses after leading in the polls for months.

I really like Kasich
Don't know if this is fishing or not, but I'm in - especially compared to what else the GOP has to offer.  I'm not against voting Democratic, but not anyone they are offering up either.

CNN, FOX & MSNBC all have articles up pushing Rubio as the winner last night.

Hong Kong Phooey & Fruit Salad really need to drop out.
Kasich has a better shot than Rubio, at this point.  The race will shift north and west where Kasich will do well.  If Rubio can't win FL, where is he going to win?

I liked how Rubio would zing Trump and then look at the crowd and smile like Stanley Roper used to on Three's Company when he zinged his wife.

Eh I don't know. I see why people would want this but what you have here are people backing the man, the personality, an idea which is bigger than platform or ideology. There aren't many Trumps laying around. Next time up they will likely just revert to form.

I agree. This will be an outlier type of election/candidate field.

It's the first time in my voting history where I truly don't like anyone on both sides (other than Kasich who has been DOA for some time now).

I liked towards the end when the big three were yelling over one another and Carson kept trying to say "I'm Ben Carson" but all he could get out over and over was I am Ben....I am....I am Ben."

Ben did enough last night to get some votes on Super Tiesday and continue to take away votes from others.

I don't think either has a great shot but Kasich has very little money and was an afterthought on the stage last night.  He has no shot while Rubio has a puncher's chance if everyone else drops out.

From a Presidential standpoint, Kasich won the debate. It would be embarrassing to have any of the others leading our country. But Kasich is a total non-factor, so of the real candidates, Rubio won it. The way he destroyed Trump on his healthcare "plan', and wouldn't relent, was awesome. All Trump kept saying was removing the lines.  lol  Rubio made fun of it and asked for his actual plan.  Trump said it again.  And Rubio kept pressing him.   I hate Trump and even I was uncomfortable. I think Wolf finally saved Trump by moving on. The other candidates know that Trump has absolutely zero clue as to what he's doing about any real issues, and they're starting to expose him. Unfortunately, his head-in-the0-sand supporters don't care about that stuff. His poll numbers won't drop a bit. God bless America.  lol

I think this is pretty astute analysis. Trump is going to be the nominee. But hopefully the general public will see that the emperor has no clothes.

I'm not big on Rich Lowry, but his article yesterday on the ####storm that's coming in about a month once Trump locks up the nominee is dead on.  I don't know how effective it will be, but for those of us who understand what a POS the guy is it's gonna be a lot of fun to watch.

Maybe Rubio and Kasich should cut a deal to publicly form a singular ticket based upon "common sense" and electability in November.

It's going to take an unconventional tactic from someone to stop the Trump train at this point.

We already know he has the highest unfavorables ever. Of course Hillary has 2nd highest but the pros in the DNC are not going to leave oppo research on the sideline like the GOP has.

I laughed last night thinking about how we can add Polish voters in the Midwest to all the other groups Donald has alienated. There are a ton of Poles, very proud people, I'm sure they didn't enjoy those exchanges or that news story.

My personal take on last nights debate without the schtick would be the following:

I think John Kasich had the best night and looked the most presidential. Like the only adult in the room. It would be nice to see him get traction.

I don't think Cruz did much to really stand out or leave an impression with the audience.

I believe Rubio probably had the best night if you are blending performance with current viability in the polls.

But, ultimately, I don't see much changing other than maybe Marco getting a bump. But the guy is down big in his own state and I don't think he can overcome that.

I felt like Rubio did a good job exposing Trump a bit. Trump is approaching a point where he is not going to be able to just coast on bluster/schtick/insults, etc. He is going to have to start getting into the meat of somethings on policy and that is going to be interesting.

It will not be effective at all.  Stuff like that plays right into Trumps hand.   It takes the focus away from his actual policies and lets him hammer away at the people throwing the insults.  He can easily brush off every one of those things in his article.  Why in holy hell hasnt Rubio or Cruz try and pin him down on specifics may be the dumbest thing in the history of campaigning.   They looked foolish last night insulting his school and filing for bankruptcy.  Nobody cares about that especially if it happened years ago.  The dude is a billionaire.
