***Official 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs thread : Pens raise the cup for 4th time in franchise history*** (2 Viewers)

If you watched that whole game and weren't allowed to see the goals, you would have bet the house the Caps won.  Hockey playoff games are strange that way, no other sport is like this.

Insane last few minutes.
Take Game 5 of Flyers Caps as another example.

So glad this fantastic matchup of the East's top 2 teams isn't taking place in the Conference Finals.
:coffee:

Not often you see a defending conference champ who is still playing get this little respect.

The Lightning may be the defending conference champ but that doesn't mean that they're one of the top 2 teams in the East this year.  Not sure how his post was disrespectful towards the Lightning?

I guess by that logic the Blackhawks weren't one of the two best teams in the west last year either.

Sure - a couple weeks from now if the Lightning are in the cup, I'll change my tune.  Up to this point, based on a full body of work, the Caps and Pens have been the top 2 teams in the East this year.

Caps have had games this playoffs in which their attempts were 86-27 and 85-36 ... and lost both.

Did the same thing against the Flyers. If 80 of those shots are from the perimeter, they're not much of a threat. Have to go in and get dirty at some point.

You seem to be spying disrespect for TB, when this is really a discussion of the NHL's playoff system. So let's take teams out of it and just have a discussion.

At the end of the first round, 4 teams have advanced. Their point totals for the season placed them as: 1, 2, 5 and 6. For this round of the playoffs, of all the available options, what seeding do you think makes most sense?

1 vs. 2, 5 vs. 6

1 vs. 6, 2 vs. 5

1 vs. 5, 2 vs. 6

The system is stupid of course. I don't really care about the disrespect angle, it's just a message board and it will all come out in the wash anyways. I just find it odd that everybody assumes the winner of this series is marching into the cup finals. No big deal.

Tough loss for the Caps last night. Played their best game of the series last night and still lost. 2 fluky goals for the Pens and Murray playing out of his mind. If Caps play like that again in Game 4, we're tied 2-2.

2 fluky goals? The 2nd goal off Kuhnhackl's back is the only one I'd consider fluky. Regardless, all 3 Pittsburgh goals were the result of sloppy Washington play. First one was a weak, lazy attempt to move the puck in the defensive zone resulting in a turnover (Niskanen, I think). Second goal followed Backstrom's poor judgement to jump the pass and go for the steal, missing pretty badly. Third was Schmidt's bad sequence of plays in his own zone and John Carlson skating way up ice on the rush rather than taking care of his own end first.

I wish the Alzner/Niskanen pair could play about 40 minutes.

I think the Schmidt goal was kinda fluky, but you're right, his sloppy play was the reason there was an opportunity there. I'm not panicking quite yet. There's still in it, but need to come out firing again in Game 4. If they're going to continue to take the long distance shots, they need guys in front of the net looking for put backs. Need to put more pressure on Murray. He's played well, but a lot of the shots he's had to stop haven't been too tough on him.

You can do the same exercise in the West (except even worse with 6 vs. 7).  I got similarly chastised for bringing it up because San Jose is a dangerous team as a #6 (which I don't disgree with).  So over there it's 1 vs. 2 and 6 vs. 7.

What makes you so sure they would have met in the ECF.

Just enjoy the series and be thankful that the 1&2 actually get to play each other. Regardless of when it takes place.

This is sound logic for any other team/city.  But it doesn't work for Caps fans because of the history during the Ovi era of not making it out of the second round, and for DC sports fans who haven't had any of their four teams reach the conference finals in almost 20 years.

If the Caps made the ECF and lost to Pittsburgh (or anyone) it would have been treated as a mild success, the best season of Ovi's career and the best finish by any DC team since 1998.  Losing this round will be just another depressing result to throw onto the pile.

that panic button is awfully big when you're hitting it after absolutely dominating a team for 60 min on the road and only down 2-1 in the series.

I haven't whined about the seeding at all. I love it. I hope we get to play the ####ing Oilers in the next round.

Rangers round 1 tickets were about 7-8x what Islanders tickets cost tonight.

They need a better goal song though.

Lucky bounce right there.

Thank god I'm a Blues fan.  With the penguins and islanders still going strong I'd hate to be like a Rangers fan or something.  That would suck.
