*** Official 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season Thread *** (1 Viewer)

My wife is Puerto Rican, her and all her family are from the island. Her immediate family, parents, brothers and sisters have moved to the states, but she still has extended family that remain on the island. She has heard from some of them that they are alive, but everything is in bad shape. I'm just thankful that her family made it through. I hate thinking about what the situation would be if we found out some of her family died in this storm.

I should add, I'm not sure how they were able to find out they were alive. I just know her, her brother and sister said they heard from them somehow.

My brother in law's mother is from PR. (my sister's husband's mother)  I learned last night that her and her husband had gone to PR just before the storm.  As of last night, they had not heard from them.  Crazy stuff.

Just got word.  Everyone is ok.   Had water in the house for the first time ever.   Cleaning up now. Should have enough supplies for now.

Whew

UKMet had a bit of west move in the last run. Still remote chance of a US landfall.

Remnants of Leo have started to get organized.  Could spin up into something in the next few days.

So I am part of a historic FEMA effort that is sending up to 5000 people to various places for hurricane relief. This "tier 4" is made up of all agency volunteers working for agencies outside Homeland Security. I'm in the 2nd waive, first waive left today. Almost all of them are going to Florida main and the keys.

So they asked today for 60 volunteers for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. There were 150 of us in a room and I positioned myself to bolt to the front of the line. I was first, so to the islands I go. This was exactly what I signed up for.

Texas & Florida are doing great but Puerto Rico, which was already suffering from broken infrastructure & massive debt, is in deep trouble..

Has anyone told him yet Puerto Rico is part of the USA?

Good luck and Thanks.

Good luck!  When do you arrive??

What do you make of some of the more pessimistic PR estimates, i.e. 6 months to restore 90% of power, agricultural industry totally wiped out on island?

So apparently someone somewhere is screwing up big time in PR.

The people were told flights out of PR are ready to go.  Relatives have been going online to purchase tickets and somehow getting word to their family members that a ticket is waiting for them at San Juan airport.   And when the relatives get to the airport, there are no flights going out or they are cancelled.   Now tons of people are "stranded" at the airport without food or water.

Some supermarkets are not opening up because they have no security and they are afraid of what will happen if they open.

It's still a hot mess.

What can they do. There are more than 3 mil without power.

You have to consider evacuating them to Florida for awhile.

The point was stop selling tickets if there actually aren't any flights.   They ended up with tons of people at the airport for no reason

Good luck sir, We were just sent the link to sign up. Appears they are opening it up for everyone at this point.    Seriously considering......

I looked at flight aware just now. There are inbound commercial flights.

Be careful of fake news in these events.

It's not fake news.   Unless my guy on the ground was telling me something wrong.

I understand it's a difficult time and no easy answer but it's tough.

The Wall Street Journal reported on September 25 that “only about 2,000 passengers are flying out every day despite standby lists that are in the tens of thousands” and that the airport is “missing radar” because of the storm, which is why flights are spaced out so much. The airport lacked air conditioning and only one concession stand was open, according to the newspaper.

Well the quote was "there aren't any flights"  implying 0.

reached to an old PR friend when I saw maria was on it's way. just heard back- fortunately her house is fine, and her parents (old) are there with her. but she described complete disaster to the infrastructure- power, water, roads- and looting. 3.5mil people is a LOT of people to be stuck in this situation... national guard and whatever else we have needs to be there now, not later.

Forecasts showing a disturbance is likely to hit tropical storm levels in about a week somewhere around the west side of Cuba. What it does beyond there is too far out to predict well.

The FEMA Brock Long just smoked the 2 MSNBC anchors.  I feel bad for all the PR people going thru this but I think the media again is picking and choosing what to report, especially the containers at the port.  I hope the media excepts his invitation and has one of their camera crew go along with FEMA.

There's a lot of armchair quarterbacking from people who aren't aware of the logistical nightmare of trying to supply an island.
Parts of Long Island didn't have power back a month after Sandy. We're connected by bridges, tunnels and ferries.

Gas rationing extended for a few weeks, and the gas could be trucked to us. Not only could truckers and work crews drive from other parts of the USA, but there was also lodging for them.

To think PR should be up and running by now is Pollyannish.

Just got back from VA (DC area) doing application support for FEMA's HIS program.  I will be heading to Austin/Houston to work on SDE program as field data manager in the next week or so.  Possibly PR after that for the same program and maybe more HIS here in FL.  Happy to be home for a breather, but looking forward to getting back out there and doing what I can.

Nothing in the forecast for more than a week out.

Can start getting in the mindset that this season is over.

Mike's Weather Page

"Invest 90 is organizing fast. Could be Nate soon. Noticeable shift east in the latest NHC cone and EURO ensembles shown here from weathernerds.org. This AMs 06z spaghetti models from tropicaltidbits.com shown here. GFS is more west of the EURO but we could see some of the other members shift some east in the new 12z runs coming in soon. Timing to an approaching front will turn future Nate NE... question is when. Upper Gulf to Florida west coast needs to watch. More chance it leans east of the middle. Timing is the weekend. It will be a fast mover and be in the NE US midweek. I will go live at 9am."

Tropical storm Nate expected to speed up after passing the Yucatan, and make landfall somewhere between west Florida and Louisiana around Sunday. Possibly reaching hurricane level.

Fast movement should help limit rainfall so flooding may not be too widespread.

Three more Disturbances are out there, but are not currently forecast to develop much further.

Hurricane Nate blowing the rough New Orleans so enough. Spent the day getting ready, by which I mean buying alcohol and ice.

Also, currently well stocked with margarita supplies, absinthe, and rye whiskey. I never get to Hurricane party on the weekend anymore.  Special treat.

Nate is ramping up fast. Over the past 5.5 hours, it's gone from 50 mph to 75 mph and is now a Cat1 hurricane with the next nearly 24 hours to ride out over the gulf.  That's a huge jump from previous forecasts.

Downtown MS, standing by.

Before finishing beer 2, I figured I better scurry on over to Kroger and load up. Shelves were approaching bare for necessities, still I walked away with four cases of bottled water; two boxes of Triscuits; eight sleeves of saltines; flashlight batteries (x2); extra crunchy PB; and loaf of whole wheat. Gonna slice and baggy cheese tomorrow, and overflow the ice maker. Also, gassed up the car, and laundry is done. Only remaining task is to make a beer run while everyone else is scurrying about tomorrow. ...S###, I better set my fantasy lineup in advance, just to be safe.

If anyone needs help, holler.
