*** Official 2018 San Francisco 49ers thread *** (2 Viewers)

The 2nd round pick is finally healthy and making the most of his opportunities. 👍

https://www.49erswebzone.com/articles/121561-dante-pettis-performance-against-seahawks-nfl-rookie-nomination/

Dante Pettis's Week 13 performance against the Seattle Seahawks was enough to earn the San Francisco 49ers wide receiver a nomination for the Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week. Other nominees include Denver Broncos running back Phillip Lindsay, New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley, Los Angeles Chargers safety Derwin James, and Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

The 49ers found themselves without both of their starting wideouts for the second-straight week, and Pettis benefited from the extra playing time and targets. He hauled in five receptions for 129 yards (25.8 average) and two touchdowns against Seattle, all career highs. Pettis' two scores came on 17- and 75-yard passes from quarterback Nick Mullens.

The game was Pettis' first with 100-or-more receiving yards and his first multi-touchdown performance. He now has four touchdown receptions this season, which is the most by a 49ers player during his rookie season since wide receiver Terrell Owens did so (four as well) in 1996 and the fourth-most by a rookie in franchise history.

Pettis' 129 reception yards in a single game also rank fourth-most by a rookie in franchise history and are the most since wide receiver Jerry Rice recorded 241 receptions yards versus the Los Angeles Rams on December 9, 1985.

Rice was impressed by what saw from Pettis on Sunday.

"When you make a catch like that — and I did it over and over during practice, during training camp — it was all about finishing," Rice said this week on 95.7 The Game. "I saw some flashes (from Pettis) yesterday, and he was able to get into the end zone twice. You can tell he's having a great time on that football field right now.

"I think when Kyle Shanahan, when he said some great things about him, it really built his confidence, and it's starting to show on the field."

Both runs after the catch for the TDs were impressive.

On the first, he made a DB miss with a nice stiff arm in short space.  On the 2nd, he just blew by the DB after the catch.

Funny how certain people who post here were already proclaiming him a "bust" based on a small sample size, yet if he had started out hot, their response would have been along the lines of "too early to call him a good pick".  It's almost like they want him to fail. lol

I do agree it's too early to call it a good or great pick, but he is showing that he can make plays at this level.  Also, before the "garbage time" comments start to flow, Seattle was blitzing and pressuring Mullen on the last play of the game with a 30 point lead, so don't think they got lax on either of Pettis's TDs.

At this point, Pettis is a reason for me to tune in and catch the games the rest of the season.

2018 draft starting to look pretty solid with McGlinchey, Pettis and Warner all playing well.

Hey Drummer

Better order up another beer.  Yours is half gone.....................
Ugh. I wish the quote feature would recognize the ignore feature.

His "49ers suck" schtick is so weak. We're 49er fans, we all know they're not very good right now. It's like he thinks he's dropping knowledge on us or something, and all he does is repeat himself over and over. He must think he's gonna eventually change our minds and make us hate the team like he does. Lmao. I'll be a 49er fan til I die, no internet troll is ever gonna change that.

Anyway  back on topic. I didn't get to see the game Sunday, but I like what I'm hearing about Pettis. He looked pretty good against the Bucs the previous week too. Like you said, it looks like they might have hit on their first 3 picks this past draft. The middle rounders are another story. Here's all of their picks:

Round 1 (No. 9 overall) Mike McGlinchey, OT, Notre Dame

Round 2  (No. 44 overall) Dante Pettis, WR/KR, Washington

Round 3 (No. 70 overall) Fred Warner, LB, BYU

Round 3 (No 95 overall) Tarvarius Moore, S, Southern Miss

Round 4 (pick 128) Kentavius Street, DE, NC State

Round 5 (No. 142 overall) DJ Reed, CB, Kansas State

Round 6 (No. 184 overall) Marcell Harris, S, Florida

Round 7, (No. 223 overall) Julian Taylor, DE, Temple

Round 7, (No. 240 overall) Richie James, WR, Middle Tennessee St

Where has Julian Taylor been? I remember hearing he was looking good in preseason but haven't heard any news (good or bad) since.

Found my answer on Taylor, but why not olay him before week 12? With their lack of pass rush I don't get why they wouldn't plug him and see what he's got.

https://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/49ers/jullian-taylor-describes-rookie-season-job-interview-every-day

SANTA CLARA -- 49ers defensive tackle Jullian Taylor saw significant playing time in the preseason, then had to wait until Week 12 to see his first NFL snap.

During the time in between, he tried not to concentrate on when he might play. Instead he looked forward to making the most of his opportunity.

“I didn’t really focus on that,” Taylor said. “I just knew when I went in there, that I wanted to leave a positive mark.”

While Taylor didn’t focus on when he might play, he did say that not getting onto the field until Week 12 did have its challenges.

“Of course it was hard from a competitive standpoint,” Taylor said. “Because you want to get looks out there, but other than that, I didn’t really take it personally. I just wanted to wait for my chance and I knew when I got out there, at that time, it was going to be right."

Taylor stood out in the preseason, registering two sacks, two quarterback hits and four total tackles over four games. One sack came in the first game against the Cowboys and the second in the final game against the Chargers.

It appeared Taylor was headed for a role on the defense once the regular season started, but coach Kyle Shanahan and coordinator Robert Saleh showed tempered opinions of their young lineman.

After the first preseason game, Shanahan was complimentary of Taylor’s first performance.

“He made a lot of plays that everyone saw,” Shanahan said. “And he also did his job, didn’t make many mental mistakes. He played a lot, which we needed him to. I thought he played good throughout the whole game.”

Saleh had similarly positive comments about Taylor’s first preseason appearance.

“I thought Jullian did a good job,” Saleh said. “He competed. He represented all of the things that he has shown throughout practice, and that’s violence, that relentlessness that we like.

“Again, I know there’s a lot of exciting things for him and he made a lot of plays, but in this league, nobody really cares about what you did yesterday. It’s all about what you do today and the next day and the next day after that, so he’s got to continue to stack up great days and get better at what we’re trying to work with him.”

When Taylor described finally getting a chance to play in in Tampa, he remained reserved but positive.

“It was unexplainable, to be honest,” Taylor said. “I was just happy to be out there with the guys and be as one unit, and have the opportunity to do something positive. It was fun. It was better than what I expected and everything I expected, being in an actual game.”

When asked about Shanahan’s end-of-season goals for the team, Taylor said he already sees the remainder of the season in the same fashion.

“That’s already my mindset,” Taylor said. “So when he said that, it was kind of preaching to the choir. It’s a job interview every day in the league. If someone didn’t get it before, I’m sure they got it then.”

Taylor’s most poignant statement came when he was asked what he learned about himself in his NFL debut.

He simply replied, “That I belong out there.”

Yep.  Talking football is supposed to be fun, so the "we suck" talk, while being accurate presently, isn't a lot of fun.  I would prefer to look at the possibilities for not sucking, such as Pettis showing he can make big plays at this level.  I'm excited about the offense next year if everyone comes back healthy.  Jimmy, McKinnon, Breida, Kittle, Pettis, Goodwin and a pretty decent o-line.  Another WR, preferably a  true #1, and they will be able to put up some points next year.  Wilson looks pretty good as a 3rd RB as well.

Anyway, in the mean time, we will get the comparisons of virtually every player to Shawn Hill, Derek Smith etc while he tries to make sarcastic nicknames stick.  Same old Dummer schtick.  I never post over at Niner Nation but when I do check it out, I always laugh and wonder how many posters there are Dummer.  I would put the over/under at 4.  Same style, same tired comparisons, same everything.

1981 was a great year  because they surprised and ran the table, but the build up after Walsh was hired was fun too, and I was a young, high school kid then.  They only won 2 games his first year, but they were more fun to watch and did some good things on the offensive side of the ball.  Year 2, they won 6 games and while they still sucked, they got better.  Walsh took over a bad team and the progress wasn't immediate.  Building a team from scratch takes time and Shanahan pretty much started from square 1.

As stated previous, some people aren't happy unless they're unhappy.

I know that in a perfect world, they want Moore to play CB, but maybe safety is where he belongs.  Yeah, a pretty incomplete grade on the rest of the draft class at this point.

As an aside, Dummer reminds me of my mom after my parents got divorced.  I wasn't allowed to say anything good about my dad or she would go into a rant about what a horrible person he was (he wasn't and neither was she). lol

At least I understood why she felt that way because he rejected her.  Wonder if someone on the 49ers (Jed or Balkke maybe) rejected Dummer at some point?  Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I'm taking Denver in my survivor pool next week...the 49ers better not decide to pull an upset, the winning payout is $660 and I'm 4 correct picks away from at least getting a chunk of it.

Denver is really crappy on offense besides Lindsey, but they should feast defensively next week so you should move on.
So I switched my pick to the Giants earlier in the week when I saw Emanual Sanders was out for Denver, and when I saw OBJ was out, I switched back to Denver.

First time all year I picked against the 49ers, and they make me pay for it. :lmao:

I knew Keenum was crappy this year, but geeezzzzzzzzzzzz.  Guess last year showed how good Diggs and Theilen are.

Kittle sets a new team TE receiving record.  Pettis scores again.  Something to build on with the young receivers.

Good to get a win and especially good to see the defensive effort on Lindsey.  He went into the game with a YPC over 6 and they held him to 14/30.

However, dropped into a 3 way tie for the #1 pick with the Raiders and Arizona.  Niners have Seattle, Chicago and the Rams left.  With the Rams losing, they may have to win week 17.  If so, I can't see the Niners winning any of the last 3.

Raiders have two winnable games vs Cinci and Denver, plus KC may be resting their starters week 17.  They should win at least one of those games since they seem to be out of tanking mode.

Not such good news on the Arizona front.  Atlanta, Rams and Seattle.  They could beat Atlanta with a good defensive effort, Johnson having a big game against the Falcons sorry run defense and actually targeting Fitzgerald.  Probably not though.

Hate to see SF lose, but man, having the #1 pick would be huge.

Not sure if I should be impressed that Shanahan keeps the troops motivated even when there’s nothing to play for, or discouraged because he only seems to win games during garbage time at the end of the year.

And as much as I enjoy beating Seattle, giving Lynch a tough decision at the #4 pick versus a no brainer #1 pick is a problem.

Is it really a no brainier though? From what I'm seeing, Bosa would be a polarizing pick due to the family injury history. No matter who they pick, half the fanbase will love it and half will hate it.

I’ve watched 0 minutes of college football so I don’t have a personal opinion. It just seems like Bosa is universally slotted at 1 in the mocks I've seen and is a perfect positional fit.

Same here. But if we don't have the #1 pick, were probably fine in the top 5... Unfortunately, it looks like Arizona will have the top pick and get Bosa, who will probably stay healthy and terrorize Jimmy G for years to come.

Got to give the guy credit for keeping the locker room in this situation.  Also, not garbage time from the standpoint of the teams having nothing to play for.  Good win against a playoff team that they have lost 10 straight to that was trying to clinch a playoff spot and that kicked the crap out of them 2 weeks ago.

Sucks to lose a chance at the #1 overall though.  Potential to draft the consensus best player in the draft at a position of your biggest need.  Plus, picking first day 2 as well is really valuable.

I've been seeing this guy mentioned in mocks quite a bit if SF stays in the top 5. With AZ and OAK most likely going Bosa and Quinnen Williams, and if the Jets go OL to protect Darnold, I'd be fine with this pick.

4. San Francisco 49ers: Josh Allen, OLB/DE, Kentucky

Allen surprised some by returning to Kentucky for another season, but it paid off for him. He rounded out his game and asserted himself as a likely top 10 pick in April. For the 49ers he would give them a versatile pass rusher who can attack from different positions. If the 49ers can’t get Bosa, Allen should be their first priority.

Josh Allen, DE/LB, Kentucky

If the 49ers fall slightly in the draft, Allen could be another option to rush the passer. He returned to school for his senior year, put on 20 pounds of muscle, and the decision couldn't have gone any better.

After totaling 14.5 sacks in his first three years of college, Allen has 14 sacks this season and 18.5 tackles for loss

2018 Draft

Round 7, (No. 240 overall) Richie James, WR, Middle Tennessee St
Lets look back at the past years draft.

With Pettis emerging the past few weeks, the first 3 picks are all producing and look to be solid going forward.

3rd rounder Tavarius Moore has been outstanding on special teams and played well at CB when Witherspoon went down with an injury Sunday, tallying 7 tackles (5 solo) and 2 passes defended. He will get his chance to start at CB with Witherspoon going down with an injury.

DJ Reed (5th round) had a breakout game against Denver at CB and earned a nomination for Pepsi's Rookie of the week while racking up 12 tackles, three tackles for loss, a sack and a forced fumble. Hes finally healthy and Im looking forward to seeing more of him the final 2 weeks.

Marcell Harris (6th round) has played well for 2 straight games after a shaky debut against Seattle 3 weeks ago.  This past Sunday he had six tackles and a tackle-for-loss, and had multiple stops in the open field that required him to slip blockers and make plays one-on-one. He looks to be a dynamic player and could (should?) start next season at Strong Safety.

Richie James (7th round) has shown flashes and had that 97 yard KO return for a TD. If nothing else he will be our KR going forward and WR depth.

That leaves 4th rounder Kentavuis Street (injured all year, just now starting to practice) and 7th rounder Julian Taylor (who looked great in preseason but hasnt played much for whatever reason) as the only 2 draft picks who havent made any impact.

So 7 out of 9 picks contributing...not too shabby. As much grief as people give Shanahan and Lynch for having "bad" drafts, Id say they did pretty well with this one.

Young 49ers defense is starting to grasp Saleh’s scheme, and it’s showing

http://www.knbr.com/2018/12/17/young-49ers-defense-is-starting-to-grasp-salehs-scheme-and-its-showing/

There’s something cyclical about the way the 49ers beat the Seahawks Sunday. With a healthy blend of run and pass, well-executed bend-but-don’t-break defense, and timely special teams play, the 49ers enjoyed the victory using the Seahawks’ template.

Quarterback Nick Mullens may be the most noticeable star of the current two-game winning streak, but the most important breakthrough is the improved play of the 49ers defense. Using mostly rookies and second-year players, the 49ers are starting to see the potential of Robert Saleh’s 4-3, Cover-3 scheme, which Seattle popularized earlier this decade.

Richard Sherman, giddy after beating his former team, basically gave a rundown of the defense, and how the 49ers are slowly starting to get it.

“It’s built on, guys up front putting pressure on the quarterback, and guys in the back end limiting explosives,” Sherman said postgame. “The plays come because guys get bored. Guys get tired of taking a five-yard check down or two-yard gain or three-yard gain here. They just force the ball deep down the field. If you don’t force passes against this defense, it’s going to be a real long game. It’s going to be really hard to make a play.”

By those measures, the 49ers defense has recently executed, allowing 23 and 14 points in its past two games.

Explosive plays consist of gains of 15 rushing yards or 20 passing yards. The 49ers have allowed 38 such rush plays and 41 such pass plays, both ranking No. 12 in the NFL. Out of those 79 explosive plays in 14 games, the 49ers have allowed just 31 in the past seven games.

Earlier in the season, the 49ers fell victim to inexplicable coverage busts that seemed to resurface every week.

Those issues have steadily subsided as the season has progressed. The 49ers have forced opposing offenses to earn their points by methodically marching downfield, a simple concept this defensive scheme is built upon. The Seattle game showed this — the Seahawks scored touchdowns on drives of nine plays, eight plays, and 10 plays. The 49ers allowed six explosive plays Sunday, which is actually their most in the second half of the season, but none achieved greater than 35 yards.

“It wasn’t like their points came easy,” Sherman said. “That’s what this defense is built on. You got to understand that we are doing this with guys who have really played probably less than 100 snaps in their careers, especially in the back end.”

The 49ers finished the game by deploying rookies at right cornerback (Tarvarius Moore), nickel corner (D.J. Reed), and strong safety (Marcell Harris). Elijah Lee, who had just four tackles in his rookie season last year, and rookie Fred Warner anchored the linebacker spots. The defensive line featured players in their second seasons (Solomon Thomas and D.J. Jones) and third season (DeForest Buckner). Antone Exum, who has played sparingly throughout a four-year career, Arik Armstead, and Sherman were San Francisco’s only defensive veterans consistently on the field.

Yet the 49ers played some of their best defense of the season. Several rookies or sophomores made clutch plays, in either the fourth quarter or overtime, that held off a Seahawks comeback, including:

On second-and-15, and the Seahawks marching, Harris overcame three Seahawks blockers to stop running back Mike Davis for nine yards. The Seahawks settled for a field goal after Buckner’s sack.

Thomas got backfield pressure that resulted in Buckner’s sack. Thomas also drew a crucial holding penalty.

Moore forced incompletions on consecutive plays in the fourth quarter to force a punt, which led to overtime.

The 49ers strung together three straight defensive stops to close out the game. Two weeks after allowing 37 points (excluding Bobby Wagner’s 98-yard interception return) to the Seahawks, they allowed 23 points.

Throughout recent weeks, the 49ers forced opponents to grind out drives. That includes buckling down on short third-down opportunities, which San Francisco typically wins.

According to NFL Matchup on ESPN, the 49ers entered Sunday allowing first downs on third-and-1 and third-and-2 just 46 percent of the time, which leads the NFL. In three such situations against the Seahawks, the 49ers allowed just one first down.

The 49ers rush defense — anchored by Buckner and Armstead, two 6-foot-7-plus behemoths — ranks No. 11 in the NFL with 4.2 yards per attempt. Seattle’s Chris Carson (119 rushing yards on Sunday) was the first opposing running back to eclipse more than 104 rushing yards against the 49ers this season.

Despite their recent success, there are some obvious weaknesses the 49ers need to address in the offseason, including finding a dynamic edge rusher and the right safety combination. Ronald Blair leads all 49ers edge rushers with just 5.5 sacks. The 49ers have cycled seven players in and out of the two safety spots, a result of attrition.

The lack of pass rush and opportunistic secondary have contributed to the 49ers’ inability to force turnovers. The 49ers, astoundingly, have not forced a turnover in the past six games. They have forced just five turnovers all season. The fewest turnovers in a non-strike NFL season is 11, shared by three different teams. Barring a significant turnaround, that unfortunate tag is soon to belong to these 49ers.

That presence Sherman speaks of — “guys up front putting pressure on the quarterback” — has been missing.

It’s actually remarkable the San Francisco defense has played this well recently despite the lack of takeaways. That should yield optimism that, if the 49ers can acquire the right difference-makers at those impact positions in future months, this unit could blossom into a top-half defense next year.

Spot on.

Column: It's fine 49ers lost No. 1 overall pick in 2019 NFL draft

https://ninerswire.usatoday.com/2018/12/18/column-its-fine-49ers-lost-no-1-overall-pick-in-2019-nfl-draft/?utm_source=49ersWebZone&utm_medium=dt&utm_campaign=affref

The 49ers did the unthinkable. They beat the Seattle Seahawks. Snapping a nine-game regular-season losing streak against the team’s biggest rival was supposed to be an unmitigated success and a cause for celebration. Instead it was met with resistance from a portion of the fan base that prefers to keep an eye toward the 2019 NFL draft.

San Francisco’s 26-23 overtime victory over the Seahawks in Week 15 came with a cost – three spots in next year’s draft. The 49ers went from the frontrunners for the No. 1 overall pick to the favorites to land the fourth spot. The descent in draft position is a relatively high price to pay for win No. 4 in mid-December. However, it was impossible to watch the 49ers celebrating after the game and not think that something bigger is going on.

A video posted to the 49ers Twitter account shows a jubilant locker room celebrating the victory with former Seahawk Richard Sherman. That wasn’t just an average December win. The prevailing thought coming from the locker room was that the Seahawks 43-16 demolition of the 49ers in Week 13 was a shot to the team’s collective pride.

They responded with a strong effort against a Seahawks team that was a win away from clinching a playoff spot. San Francisco was very good on both sides of the ball for all 60 minutes, and showed a resiliency that makes it hard to not be excited about the team’s future.

Yes, the first overall pick would’ve been exciting as well. A player like Ohio State’s Nick Bosa would check all the boxes to fill the 49ers’ top need in the draft.

Consider the key contributors for the 49ers on Sunday though. Their first touchdown was scored by seventh-round pick Richie James. Their second touchdown was a pass from undrafted quarterback Nick Mullens to undrafted tight end Garrett Celek. Their two leading rushers were undrafted running backs Matt Breida and Jeff Wilson Jr.

On defense, the No. 7 overall pick DeForest Buckner led the team and tackles and came up with two sacks. Third-round picks Fred Warner and Tarvarius Moore made key plays down the stretch. So did fifth-round pick DJ Reed and sixth-round pick Marcell Harris.

Contributors can be found in places other than the No. 1 overall pick.

What we saw from the 49ers on Sunday offered a different level of electricity than the kind that comes with picking first in the draft. They had a group made up of young players that played hard and with pride in a season that’s been effectively over since Week 3 when Jimmy Garoppolo got hurt.

There aren’t many teams that can say that. It speaks to the job head coach Kyle Shanahan and his staff have done keeping players engaged and improving despite the fact they’re not playing for anything.

What the 49ers lost in draft position they gained in knowledge about what they have on the roster moving forward. Falling from No. 1 to No. 4 in the draft is worth it if it means they have foundational pieces on defense in the rookies Reed, Harris and Warner. The 49ers can certainly live with James’ 97-yard kick return touchdown if it means they’ve located a game-changing special teams player. They’re fine with Mullens tossing a touchdown and posting a 110.6 passer rating if it means they have a long-term answer behind Garoppolo.

The No. 1 overall pick would’ve been a nice chess piece for the 49ers to have as they rebuild their roster. On the other hand, they still hold the fourth pick and own a ton of cap space to help bolster the depth of their still-developing roster.

Yes, the 49ers win over the Seahawks came with a cost, but what they learned throughout the victory could wind up being worth more a few spots in the draft.

The Rams need to beat the 49ers next week to secure the #2 seed, so they wont be resting any starters, which bodes well for SF keeping a top 3-4 draft pick.

The teams in the current top 5 schedules next week:

ARZ @ SEA- SEA has their playoff spot, they will most likely rest some starters week 17

OAK @ KC - KC needs to win next week to lock up the #1 seed

NYJ @ NE - Lets be honest, no way The Jets beat Brady at Foxboro

DET @ GB - Green Bay will win at home.

#3 pick ? is that what SF fans are happy for?! SHEESH..how about a new HC?? how 'bout someone who is not in above their heads? dude's got what looks to be a 10-22 record over 2 years with SF. that's borderline Hue Jackson-like. how many chances does Shanny get here? is the team that much better ( sans the QB who dates porn stars )? great OC, lousy HC.

Harbaugh could come back to SF tomorrow and that team would hit the playoffs running..probably be an 10+ win franchise his first season. same with Urban Meyer.

Nick Mullens, George Kittle putting up historic stats

in the seven games Mullens has started for the 49ers, he has put up historic numbers.

On Sunday, Mullens completed 22 of 38 passes for 241 yards in the 49ers’ 14-9 loss to the NFC North-champion Chicago Bears. Mullens became the first 49ers quarterback to throw for 220 yards or more in seven consecutive games since Jeff Garcia in 2000.

Mullens also ranks third since 1970 for yards passing in his first seven NFL games. Here’s the complete list:
2,149 – Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City, 2018
2,103 – Cam Newton, Carolina, 2011
1,995 – Nick Mullens, 49ers, 2018
1,971 – Andrew Luck, Indianapolis, 2012

With three field goals on Sunday against his former team, Gould has now made 22 consecutive field-goal attempts, which ranks third in club history behind his own streak and Phil Dawson’s 27.

--Edge rusher Cassius Marsh recorded two sacks. Marsh, a fifth-year pro, has a career-high 5.5 sacks on the season and is tied with Ronald Blair for No. 2 on the team.

--Defensive tackle DeForest Buckner added to his single-season high in sacks. Here is a list of the 49ers’ most sacks in a single season since 2000:

12.5 – Andre Carter, 2002
12.0 – DeForest Buckner, 2018

We're picking #2 overall. I for one hope they grab Josh Allen. What say ye?

https://www.49erswebzone.com/articles/122489-49ers-secure-overall-pick-2019-nfl-draft-week/
Well, if Baalke was around, I'd think they'd trade that pick for 5 picks between rounds 3 & 7.

Maybe if they take Allen, they could actually finish inside the top 20 on sacks for 2019? Ya know, considering it would be their 4th 1st rounder on someone that plays the defensive front in the last 5 years.

49ers one of 5 teams that could be forced to do Hard Knocks. Lions, Raiders, Giants, and Redskins are the others.

Please God no. Please pick the Raiders.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind it.

At least something to get me to connect with the team. This season was prob my least engaged since the late 2000's during their last long stretch of mediocrity.

I just see no point, this team is bad, and it starts all the way at the top. Most of us remember this quote:

It’s up to us to make sure we compete for and win Super Bowls. That’s our only goal. We don’t raise division championship banners, we don’t raise NFC Championship banners. We raise Super Bowl banners. And whenever we don’t deliver that, I hope that you will hold me directly responsible and accountable for it. And we look forward to getting this thing back on track.
Yea, Jed, I hold you accountable. Thanks for sending the only guy to right the ship this millennium packing, well done Jed!

Tomsula, Kelly, Shanahan. ####### useless trust fund idiot doesn't know ####!

I only rooted for my fantasy players this season, Chris Carson might've been my favorite player all year. Imagine, rooting for Seattle to just pound the ball down everyone's throat. My favorite play of the entire 2018 season, and it came against SF https://www.seahawks.com/video/chris-carson-rushes-for-1-yard-touchdown

Outside of fantasy, Nick Foles is the only thing that has kept me intrigued, go Birds!

Report: 49ers fire strength and conditioning coach Ray Wright

With a team inundated with injuries for 2018 Wright was going to get a long hard look. It looks like it was time to move on.

https://www.ninersnation.com/2019/1/4/18168553/ray-wright-fired-49ers-news-strength-and-conditioning-coaching-staff-injuries

The San Francisco 49ers have fired strength and conditioning coach Ray Wright. The news comes from NBC Bay Area’s Jennifer Lee Chan per her Twitter page.

Wright was hired as part of Kyle Shanahan’s coaching staff in February of 2017. The two have had extensive history with both Washington and the Houston Texans. The hire was part of a replenishment of the entire strength and coaching staff as a result of the 49ers’ firing of Chip Kelly.

The 49ers dealt with an obscene amount of injuries for 2018. Many them getting looks at the team’s conditioning in response. While the two ACL injuries suffered by Jerick McKinnon and Jimmy Garoppolo early in the season could have been a case of bad luck, strains, sprains, and frequent additions to injured reserve plagued the team all year long. The 49ers were playing backups of backups at some positions (safety comes to mind) and holding their breath that the remaining starters wouldn’t go down. The injury level in 2017 was also concerning with several players going down at a frequent pace.

There is no word on who the replacement will be. Matt Barrows suggested the next man up is assistant coach Dustin Perry. The 49ers don’t want to hit an injury riddled season so even if Perry is the guy, they may be looking at all angles to make sure they aren’t doing this again.

There weren’t any indications Wright’s job was in jeopardy. Shanahan and John Lynch did say they were going to look into the amount of injuries, but it didn’t go further than that. Here’s what they said in their press conference below:

Kyle Shanahan: “It’s been too big of a deal for two years. Injuries are pretty random, but it’s also affected us huge. So, that’s something that we definitely have to sit back and really look at it from all angles and put a lot of time into. Just try to find a better perspective at it.”

John Lynch: “There’s an old adage in football, I don’t know if it’s exclusive to football, but your best ability is availability. We haven’t had a lot of guys available and that’s something we’re looking into hard. It’s been ongoing. We’ll continue to do that because it’s something that needs to change and I don’t think anyone’s to blame. We have been studying it. We’ll continue to, and try to get a handle on that.”

CBS Sports mock draft has the obvious pick of Josh Allen going to 49ers

Better get used to this scenario

We’re now going to be jumping on the mock draft train like we do every year around this time and dissect every pick to see if that’s the player the San Francisco 49ers want.

The problem is, being at second overall and having the needs the 49ers have, it makes things a bit redundant on who they pick. Get ready for the Nick Bosa/Josh Allen chain of picks.

CBS Sports’ R.J. Wright put together a mock draft where he factored in trades to the equation. Sadly, the 49ers, and the Arizona Cardinals in front of them at No. 1, do not have trades on the table. This leads to the Cardinals taking Bosa and the 49ers taking Allen. Shocker, I know. Here’s what Wright had to say about Allen:

Allen could have entered the draft last year but the odds were slim that someone would have taken him in the first round. Now, unless he has a terrible predraft season, he’s almost certain to go in the top five after a year where he doubled his sack total (to 14) after adding weight.

The big trade was the Oakland Raiders trading back at No. 4 with the Jacksonville Jaguars so the latter could get their quarterback, Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins. A pretty believable move given their situation. Given the quarterback crop this year, Haskins may be the only signal caller worth spending an early pick on. If that’s the case, and he has some good pro days/combines, he very well could coerce all the quarterback needy teams into a bidding war. Maybe teams might go to an earlier pick just to keep other suitors from getting their hands on him.

That’s all a big if. As its been noted, the quarterback class for 2019 is kind of ‘meh’ at the very moment, but that will change once interviews, workouts, pro days, and the NFL Combine dive deeper into the abilities of these young signal callers

Heres the mock draft:

AB is the last thing on Earth this team needs. A diva superstar WR? Poison to a locker room, p###.

31 years old too, yea, no thanks.

Totally agree. He's on a perennial playoff team (most years anyway lol), with a HOF QB, is a top 3 highest paid WR, led the league in targets and TDs, and hes STILL not happy.

Hard pass. Let someone else deal with his crap.

Was really tough rooting for the Cowboys today but I had to do it.
I wanted them both to lose, but for Chris Carson to have a huge game. I didn’t get any of my wishes. Pretty sad that Carson was one of my favorite players down the stretch this season, but York made me do it :kicksrock:
