I'm not knowledgeable about soccer. But my favorite thing this time of year is people who watch half a game every four years wading into a discussion on how they can fix all the things wrong with soccer and make it more popular. As if the billions that love it weren't enough.
I've not been fully engaged with the thread... but I haven't seen any of these posts here so far the way I have in the past. somebody posted a "I tried, but it's not for me" post that seemed pointless, but at least not oblivious or antagonistic.

A couple of the usual trolls tried in here and in the Qatar thread but they are so far in the minority they were just ignored and they went away.

And sorry I wasn't clear. I didn't mean this thread. I was more observing my Twitter feed with NFL people complaining.

I mean, I don't get the draw either. But I'm not so dense to ignore a zillion people do get the draw.

Do you get NFL ties? I know they're rare, but we usually get 1-2 per season.

I’m not surprised we had that xG advantage but by that much surprises me a little. I know xG never tells a full story but on face value that suggest we were maybe twice as good - we were better, especially in the 2nd half but not quite that much better. Still frustrating that all this good play has resulted in just one goal.

A great day for US Soccer.

For now, because we have a chance to advance. And for the future because its one more building block for 2026.
funny- with all the tie discussion above, and thinking about how the US are now 1-2-0 vs England in the WC.... it got me thinking- this will likely be the last time England go into this game as favorites. (if the "tip of the iceberg" US soccer situation is as I've been saying it is). England may NEVER beat the US in the WC... something I'm loving.

The two late games tomorrow look great:

France v Denmark
Argentina v Mexico
France is going to run rampant, IMO.

Mex... they outplayed Poland almost the entire game. and would continue to do so forever... and still not look like ever scoring a goal vs them. while Poland looked at least somewhat likely. will be interesting to see what they can do against a pissed off Argentina.

Not that you guys should care about my personal life, but I tee off in an hour and am debating whether to have it on the radio (cart speaker) or complete shut off all electronics as I have it set to record (doable with effort by me). I intend to do the former if we know that USA isn’t playing to win and the latter if we are.

Any indication yet? I assume the starting lineup would be the indicator?

I love soccer but can’t stand listening to it on the radio.
i didn’t.

Nearly shot par. Now time to watch the game.

Okay so we have Group A scenarios....

Ecuador advance with
A Win or Draw
Or a Loss and Netherlands loss where Ecuador loses by less
Or loss and Netherlands loss where they lose by the same margin and Ecuador outscores Netherlands
Or loss and Netherlands loss where they lose by the same margin, score the same and they have superior fair play points
Or loss and Netherlands loss where they lose by the same margin, score the same and fair play points are even and they draw the lucky ping pong ball.

Or a Loss by 1 and Ecuador/Senegal draw
Or a Loss by 2 and Ecuador/Senegal draw and they score as many or more goals than Senegal.
Or a Senegal loss.

Senegal advance with a win
Or a draw and Netherlands loses by 3+
Or a draw and Netherlands loses by 2 and Senegal outscores Netherlands

Qatar advances with a serious serious amount of bribery

Fixed to add in the bit about fair play points. Currently Netherlands -1, Ecuador -3.

France looked scary the last 60 or so minutes of their first game. Like really scary.

With probably 3 of their 5 best players injured and not playing.

Just wanted to chime in and say I watched the game (I usually watch the World Cup in some form at least for a bit) and was happy that we were able to draw.

This is a good day for U.S. soccer. Congrats to the diehards and fans that support it.

thanks man.

it's funny- I was talking with a friend out in CA this afternoon after the game. if you had asked me beofre the WC if I'd be happy with the US getting 2 draws and heading into the last game with Iran still in contention and in control of their destiny, I'd have said yes... emphatically.

but the US was by and large the better team in both games- and while the results were certainly fair enough, I'm still disappointed they weren't more clinical with their finishing and final ball- because 6 points was completely reasonable and within their reach with how theyve played.

I am not so much into the sub plots as I just enjoy the general competition but there is something really kind of juicy about Tata possibly playing a part in Messi's last chance at a WC.

And to be clear, I don't mean this thread. This more an observation on my Twitter timeline.
Soccer is the only sport I really watch anymore. No commercial timeouts are enough to make it superior to anything else. It’s such a game changer.

Knowing that the game will last around 1h52m is a big plus too. Although maybe that's more like 2h the way they've added time in the WC so far. Either way -- you almost always know when the game will be over and it's an easier commitment.

I love all sports, tbh. but this was part of why I stopped watching basketball... the 30 minute long last 2 minutes was unbearable for me. and baseball... I have to be in the right mood- even when I'm in the park.

seriously. those are the words every team the US has EVER gotten a result against since 1990 has used. so little respect for the actual game the US just played- contolling the MF, making plays all over the field... makes me sick, tbh.
They make those comments because they know it gets under your skin. Best way to respond is to advance!

On the flip side I get a bit of a 1998 horror flashback seeing as we've scored one goal and only one goal...

Also that stretch of gaining corners was evidence for the US outplaying them in their half.

The English fans should be pissed at their weak sauce midfield and impotent offense. When Mcguire is your best player, you're in trouble.

Saka and Sterling looked like dog crap in generating offense, always a step slower than Jedi and Adams.

Other countries better take note of this team full of youngsters playing with skill and going toe to toe with ENG.

Rice was poor, as were both Trippier and Shaw. But it seemed to me we took the foot off the gas and played for a draw over the last 20 minutes.
I've never understood Rice, tbh. I've never seen anything from him any different than he showed today... a step slow of foot and decision making, and technically and physically not all that. MMA owned him.
So you're saying he's not athletic or well organized?

Early odds per Draft Kings:

USA -110
Draw +255
Iran +300

Don't mean to be unpatriotic, but if all Iran needs is a draw wouldn't that be the most value bet?

No. The US is better than Iran, so even though Iran will be bunkering and trying for a draw, the most likely result is a US victory. Play this game 10 times and the US probably wins 5 or 6, with 2 or 3 being a draw and 1 or 2 being an Iran victory. That, combined with most of the bettors likely being US fan boys and the expected homer bets and you get the bookies putting that line out there.
