***Official 2022 World Cup Thread*** (1 Viewer)

this is the clearly the wrong event for a person like me to watch who wants to avoid all political issues and just enjoy some competition.

:(

Countries opposing each other in high profile competition? Shocking politics would bleed in. Always is fascinating to see how FIFA navigates the most sensitive cases - which is generally most fraught in AFC

Germany-Spain gives us the chance at a couple fun scenarios.

Germany win puts all teams level at 3 points.

Spain win puts the goofy scenario in play where a team with 3 points can advance (not you Costa Rica - well not you unless Germany loses by at least 7 and more probably at least 8)

It is fun to think Messi may be in MLS next summer but a bunch of fans are going to be bummed if he is likely "rested" on all the field turf fields...

Jesus I am old. I just realized I have been listening to JP Dellacamera (announcer for Can - Cro game) since 1991 and the "World Series of Soccer". yes that was the name :bag:

Canada has just looked totally deflated since the first Croatia goal. Like they knew their tournament was over.

Still 20 minutes left....

So this might be a really dumb question but I am a dumb person so I'm going to ask it. On that Croatian breakaway, why is that pass not offsides? It's two Croatian guys and the goalie - no defensive players.

Other Croatian guy was behind the ball.

Can’t be offsides if the ball is further up the field than you.

I was only half watching at that point but the offsides rule is when the ball is played and I think he was behind the ball when it was played and thus cannot be offsides (you cannot be offside if you are behind the ball or in your own half of the field when the ball is played)

The player who received the pass was behind the play when the ball was played. In order to be offside, you need to be (1) past midfield (which he was), (2) behind the second-to-last defender (which he was), and (3) ahead of the ball (which he was not). Rare occasion but it does happen sometimes.

3rd match day is going to be intense in most of the groups. I’m looking ahead at my workweek trying to decide which games I can miss, which I’ll watch at my office while “working“ and which games I’ll have to watch at home or at an establishment.

Germany - Spain was one we all circled when the draw was announced back in April. My heart says Spain is overrated and overconfident while Germany is ready to unleash some blitzkreig. My brain says the German defense could give Spain another 7 goals today.

Fabrizio throwing water on the Messi to Miami move

====================

Fabrizio Romano

@FabrizioRomano

Leo Messi has not decided his future yet. His camp guarantees that Leo is only focused on the World Cup and there’s no agreement with any club. Inter Miami want Messi and will push; but also PSG will offer Leo a new deal soon. Messi’s decision will be made in 2023.

In contrast, viewership in Germany was only 9.23 million for their opening game on Wednesday, less than half the normal number for weekday games in prior World Cups. According to a German friend of mine, there is a high level of disgust with FIFA corruption and Qatar human rights issues in Germany that is putting people off the event. I saw the fan demonstrations at club games prior to the tournament but didn’t believe they were serious about it.

Germany seems like a country that really has its stuff together.

I still don’t trust them
