*** Official 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season Thread *** Post Helene and Milton (4 Viewers)

FEMA has set up operations in Perry, Jacksonville, Ft Lauderdale and Miami, at first you might think the storm isn't going to hit those areas as hard, that's exactly why they go there
It's about as close as they can get without being caught in harms way themselves and they can roll out immediately towards areas of need

Not trying to toot the horn of FEMA but I'm happy they are close by and on stand by and hopefully help will get to people of need fairly quickly
I expect to see some roof top rescues

WOW! Here is the full clip of the Observed #Tornado Warned Storm from a Matlacha, #Florida Live Cam moments ago including #PowerFlashes! 😮 #flwx #Milton @NWSTampaBay

Huge wobble and it's now trending much further north :(
Source? No other reports of this that I can find yet.
NHC: “Milton is currently moving north-northeastward or 030/15 kt. A turn towards the northeast is anticipated with a slower forward speed later this evening. Tropical-storm-force winds are just offshore and now is the time to stay inside and away from windows. Listen for updates and be ready in case you lose electrical power. Keep a battery-powered radio, charged cell phone and flashlight handy.”

Thx! Is that saying there’s a wobble to the north that was not being forecasted over the last few hours? Seems like it’s what they been saying.

As mentioned, the north movement was forecast yesterday. The fact that it wobbled south of the track and has now returned to the expected track whether it was or was not due to a wobble to or from isn't a big shock. Wobble watching is discouranged by both the NHC and others.

The situation here is similar to what the HMON thought might happen, in that shear would hit without dry air and disturb the storm such that it would feel the cold front more. The other global models were looking for a EWRC and Dry Air intrustion at the same time as shear sending it East since a weaker storm would not feel the cold front quite to that extent.

Currently 937 by recon which is a bit stronger. The thought that it would dip strongly south now is getting less and less likely.

Looking at the 48 radar, it seems Bonita Springs and south (Naples) is going to dodge a lot of the wind and rain. Just have to worry about a possible tornado and the storm surge in the coming hours.

One local station (WFLA channel 8) is saying landfall could be between 7 and 9pm
When they say landfall, are they specifically talking about when the eye hits land or when a main band hits land?

Seems silly if they are waiting for the eye.

The eye, that's when it's considered landfall. The outer bands and effects are already all over S Florida and have been for hours.

The tornado alerts on my phone right now make me feel like I'm in Twister 3.
Yup, waiting to see Glen Powell and his truck with the drills at the bottom.
My buddy lives in that neighborhood between McGregor and 41, kinda by the mall...he evac'd but his neighbor sent him video of the aftermath of a tornado that went down his street.

Wait, doesn't further north imply later landfall? How can reports be saying it's not turning east as much but also is going to make landfall sooner?

hope you are all staying safe down there please be careful and check in with others so they know you are

Alerts on the TV just won't stop, lots and lots of tornados and I'm pretty far from where the storm is making landfall, it's unbelievable
2 counties got Hurricane warnings very late, Indian River and Okeechobee counties pretty late on any evacuation efforts
Feel bad for these folks, they're running around as we speak trying to gather what supplies they can and fill up with gas/generators etc
Very dangerous with so many tornados spotted in this area and warnings going off every few minutes

Holy........

Tornado over bridge
I know that tiny town well…Matlacha (pronounced like Nick Lachey’s brother Matt). It’s just a bunch of homes and 2 restaurants on a bridge going from the mainland to an Island. I can’t imagine those homes faired well. Huge $$ Boca Grande just north west.

Matt Lachey is exactly how I was picturing it in my mind, so I subsequently typed that into Google Maps to see where it was located.

Google corrected my spelling and got me to the correct spot....

Serious prayers up to all you Floridians in the FFA, and any family/friends/acquaintances you have there. This looks so bad already and it's just the beginning.

Life-long Mississippian, I remember the damage from Katrina well, it doesn't seem like 19 years ago...seeing these camera feeds and tornado footage has me seeing flashbacks a bit

@culdeus has done a good job of pointing out any time the storm weakens....
125 mph winds, and the pressure has fallen off to about 950 now

Still gonna cause a lot of damage but might limit the loss of life on this storm

New update from Denis Phillips has it going pretty East into south Sarasota. Best Case Scenario at this point.
Yea he’s saying that was the official 4 PM position but it’s already not tracking enough east.

So a friend of mine is flying out of Southern CA and heading to the hurricane areas for her work. Not the best time to go obviously.... but the fact that her boyfriend is actually named "Milton" just ... well as Alanis would say "isn't it ironic"?
