Maybe I should just stick with my PC + WiiU plan. How has E3 been going for Nintendo, Larry?
Nintendo Direct right now, but I can't watch it...

Mario Kart 8

Super Mario World U (3D mario)

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Retro Studios game)

Smash Bros. is coming probably last... I'm super excited about that.

But I can't see anything 'cuz their site doesn't work at my job...
I can smell the dust from here. Are these guys ever going to come up with something new?
They put out new stuff all the time... Everyone then immediately asks them when the next Mario/Zelda/DK/Metroid/etc. game comes out.

The thing is that they can fund whole systems based on those base Nintendo franchises, and it doesn't look like that is ever going to end.

But they have created some new things that worked. Pikmin and Animal Crossing are both pretty decent (Pikmin I've played and like, Animal Crossing i have no idea on). They still have Fire Emblem and the Wars series.

And they just announced Mega Man was gonna be in the new Smash Bros., so that's cool
Never got into Pikmin or AC much. Always good to play another Mario Cart and Smash Bros.

If it isn't broke, why fix it?
:goodposting:

Mario Kart Wii sold 34 million copies, Mario Kart DS sold 22 million, Mario Kart 7 (3DS) has sold 8 million already (still counting)

Mario Galaxy sold 10.68 million, Galaxy 2 sold 6.36 million, Mario 3D land sold 8.29 million

New Super Mario Wii sold 27 million

Smash Brothers sold 11 million

it isn't broke, they make a ton of money off this stuff. They work on new stuff all the time (part of the reason Smash Bros. wasn't made 100% in house this time, rather they partnered with someone else to make it).

Combine that with Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem, Pikmin, and all the other stuff they have (Kirby, DK, Yoshi, Kid Icarus, Metroid etc.) and they are pretty set. And the thing is, they have almost every kind of game that exists out there. Sports, platformer, FPS, RTS, etc... I watched Microsoft's press conference, every game involved shooting something (even the RPGs seemed to).

I honestly don't understand the complaint about Nintendo...

My guess is a majority of those were Japanese buys, no?

Sorry Larry, Nintendo is done.
:coffee:

get back to me when someone other than Nintendo is making a profit. Even with bad sales, Nintendo is still making money, companies that make money don't go under.

Microsoft and Sony are both, typically, losing money on video games and subsidizing this with all of their other things.

I'm not worried about Nintendo going under.
http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/04/26/nintendos-530-million-loss
quote:

For the 2011 fiscal year (April 2011 through March 2012), Nintendo posted a historic first-ever net loss of $530 million dollars.
Nintendo has been a company for like 120 years now, they posted the first loss for a year in the history of their company in 2011. EVER.

How many years since PSX came out has Sony's gaming division had a net loss? How about Microsoft since XBox? I'd guess more often than not judging based on their hardware pricing strategy (selling hardware at a loss and subsidizing with game sales).

So last FY they lost $530M. Then they banked on the Wii U making them profitable again. Then they released the Wii U, which has tanked.
I was replying to:

Even with bad sales, Nintendo is still making money, companies that make money don't go under.
which clearly is not true for Nintendo. Nintendo is struggling and continues to struggle.
I'm agreeing with you.

its about 1/3 American, 1/3 Japanese, 1/3 worldwide.

Microsoft is almost 100% American.

Sony is also about 1/3 each region.

I'm not debating that they have hot properties. That's obvious. But how many new people are they going to attract to their systems with those? They can't grow their business with those recycled titles and it's starting to show.

They have other games, sure, but they're an afterthought and nobody wants to play those games on Nintendo systems.

I'm not complaining. Just observing.

Nintendo's biggest problem is that 3rd parties (EA especially) won't make games for their systems.

Take all 3rd party games off XBox and Playstation and they'd be in a worse spot than Nintendo is.

got a link, because the above just isnt factual

The dedicated servers thing will be interesting. That would be huge in several ways. I could see developers either refusing to make a PS4 version because of the cost of coding for P2P, refusing to code for XB1 because of server costs, forcing PS4 users to pay for MP access to play on leased servers or even Sony also having dedicated servers.

With the PS4 offering livestreaming, live look-ins, ability to jump in and take over someone's game and the ability to instantly upload gameplay, it sounds like Sony has a hefty server network in place. If they are able to guarantee all that stuff for every game, does that mean they have all dedicated servers? I don't know, but it seems plausible.

Also, Sony has said the PS4 has a dedicated chip for VoIP, all that streaming stuff and other background operations. So it looks like their party system will be more in line with what the 360 did rather than the PS3.

EA announced that they are no longer making games for Nintendo consoles at all like last month... It was followed up by some higher up saying stuff on twitter that got deleted: http://nintendoeverything.com/122192/ea-sports-software-engineer-slams-wii-u-on-twitter/ (first link I found)

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.408596-EA-Exec-Says-It-Actually-Will-Develop-Future-Wii-U-Games

They just don't seem to know what to do with the hardware (its setup differently than Microsoft and Sony's hardware).

The model is sound though. What they need to do is get better 3rd party titles. They have a built in base of software to attract a wide range with the familiarity. Get them in the door and then show them what else you have. They just have to capitalize on the second part.

Thanks. Not too big a deal to not be swindled out of $60 for a FIFA or Madden roster upgrade.

Exactly. That's kind of what I was getting at even though it wasn't clear.

Doesn't sound like you guys are noting any performance issues. That would be my biggest concern.
The only performance issues I had were that downloads (especially updates) seemed to take MUCH longer on the PS3 than the 360 for me.In-game I didn't really notice a difference. However, if it's true that the XB1 will have dedicated servers for all MP games while PS4 games are still predominately P2P, there could be a much bigger difference this go-around. Not sure how true the story is about dedicated servers on the XB1 though.
This has always been a big beef w/ my PS3. I only turn it on once a month or so, but every time I go to do something, it needs to update. I can't even get into the store without an update. And the update takes forever. Then it has to install (again, fairly slowly). Nothing like turning on your system to play a game and have it still updating 10 minutes later.

PS4 intrigues me, but then I look at that controller, and I'm reminded again why I don't like my PS3 that much. The Xbox controller is light years better.

If they fixed their interface / updating issues, and got a better controller, it'd be a no-brainer.

Likely sitting out launch to see how it all plays out.

We kind of covered this though as nobody else around here with a PS3 experiences the same issues as you do.

They got saddled with the kiddie label and never lost it. Add to that last decade hardware and it's going to be a tough sale.

I have, its one of the reasons I no longer use my PS3 (though I am hooking it back up for Last of Us).

I'm guessing not too many people only use it once a month (at best - sometimes it goes two or three months).

and I'm responding to a post from somebody else saying the updates are too slow.

I have. I don't play my PS3 that often and it seems like every time I do I have to go through the same 4 step process.

Download console update

Install console update

Download game update

Install game update

It takes around ~10 minutes and is extremely annoying. On the 360 game updates take all of about 4 seconds and console updates are only once or twice a year (and still much faster than PS3 console updates).

Seems like they have most of this worked out for the PS4 though.

No I get this too. Like every time I turn the thing on. Do they really need to update the store software every three days? Way too many updates.

Huh. I didn't know people had that many issues with the PS3 downloading.

One thing I did find that helped me with my game updates not working was to turn off the media server in system settings. Never had a problem since I did that where before it would always take two or three tries since it would stop mid-download. You guys might want to check that.

I almost NEVER get system updates though. And game updates are seldom. They don't release system updates very often, so if you're having to do it every time, you have some setting messed up or a messed up system.

I want to know more about multiplayer and potential dedicated servers. My biggest issue by far is p2p hosting.

When playing Halo 4, sometimes the host turns off their console for whatever reason (called to dinner by mom or angry that I just assassinated them). Then game pauses and you sit there waiting for another host to be chosen and the game started. Sometimes this happens multiple times during one match.

Online hosting would solve this problem.

MS has implied all XB1 multiplayer games will have dedicated servers. Though like seemingly everything around the system it's still shrouded in some mystery. I'm surprised it's not getting more publicity.

It probably isn't getting much publicity because people aren't going to assume the best of MSFT without details.

It's not just download speed - it's the fact that they need so many updates. It's constant (or at least it seems that way to a once-in-awhile user.)

I did learn the media server trick last year (and again, that's another little annoyance - one appeal of console gaming to me is the absence of having to tweak / shut off anything).

I'm just so used to the seamless, simple, speedy XBL - if PS addresses their interface / updating issues, they would really sway me (and offer another style controller, please).

Whoa. The XB1 isn't even going to launch worldwide?

If you thought November 2013 was too long to wait, bear a thought for Asian gamers who will apparently have to wait those six months, plus an additional twelve, to pick up their Xbox One. According to Alan Bowman, Microsoft's Regional VP for Sales and Marketing in Asia, the new console will launch in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and India around late 2014. (Note the lack of Japan on that list, we're still checking with Microsoft on that.) These are all regions that have been marked as gaming high-growth areas by Microsoft -- the VP added that the Xbox 360 became the top-selling console in Asia this year. The company's also pointed to its next-generationKinect sensor, one that will work in "dramatically reduced" room spaces and, according Bowman, will be better attuned to Asian gamers who might not have living room space in their homes.

Update: We've just heard back from a Microsoft spokesperson who told us the following:

"Microsoft does plan to launch Xbox One, the ultimate new-generation all-in-one entertainment system, in Japan -- we look forward to confirming timing and other details at a later stage."

From IGN, who is winning E3:

Thank you for voting!
Sony 83.22%
Microsoft 12.38%
Nintendo 4.4%

Same here. My PS3 is exclusively my Blu-Ray player now.

Again, it's very, very rare that I need to do an update of any kind. Their system updates are released about once a quarter - if that.

Here's the history of system updates.
So 43 since 2009 or about 10 per year? Sounds like a lot to me.
It was more problematic in its earlier years, granted. But there were seven last year and only one so far this year.

And a lot of those updates weren't fixing big bugs, per se. Many of them were to add new features.

It's not just download speed - it's the fact that they need so many updates. It's constant (or at least it seems that way to a once-in-awhile user.)
Again, it's very, very rare that I need to do an update of any kind. Their system updates are released about once a quarter - if that.

Here's the history of system updates.
Just going back to recent years, I count 9 for 2011, 7 for 2012. That's 16 over two years. I would wager that's more than MS has had in the 360's entire life.

So yea, for a guy who turns it on every month to every other month, it indeed prettymuch always needs an update.

Like I said, a lot of those were enhancements and you shouldn't have to download those. If you're required to, I'm beginning to think you have a bad unit.

In 7 years the Xbox 360 had 35 updates that are considered system updates. 14 of those were in the last two years by my count.

Do Sony/MS even consider Nintendo to be a competitor any more? I would think that most people purchase a PS or XBox and then if they want a kids system they grab a Wii.

I have downloaded two 600+ mb patches for god of war ascension in the week that I've owned the game. I thought that was weird, and maybe the ps3 downloaded the same one twice, but either way I've spent 30 minutes or so having to download a bunch of crap for basically a brand new game.
