Arizona Chupacabra
Got my ticket for CWS@Dbacks springtraining 2/27/09. I am ready for the season to begin. We lost RJ but picked up Garland. I personally would have preferred that RJ hung around for his 300th win but I dont think he was happy here. I kind of like the Tom Gordon signing and I am hoping to get him to sign my "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon" book.

We also got Felipe Lopez who brings his smoking hot wife along. http://phoenix.fanster.com/2009/02/06/the-...-lo-of-phoenix/

Play Ball!!

Online chat with CEO and President derrick Hall

Hall: Hello everyone. Thanks for taking the time to chat with me today. I am ready to begin, and we will go about 30 minutes.

dbbptap: Derrick, congrats on your well-deserved promotion to CEO! Are there near-term marketing plans to leverage Justin Upton, Brandon Webb, Dan Haren, Conor Jackson and Chris Snyder in a bigger way with the Diamondbacks' developing fanbase?

Hall: Thank you very much. I am excited about the position and all the organization has to offer. We have focused on the team as a whole the last few years to take pressure off of any one, or handful, of player(s). We do use their images in several ads and commercials, as part of special moments captured here at the ballpark. So much of what we preach and believe in is the magic here at Chase Field and the fan experience we provide. These are great kids who love being a part of the community and interacting with fans. Their support and the loyalty to these players has happened organically, which has been nice to watch.

redsndbackphan19: Are you concerned at all with our young hitting? If we have trouble hitting this year are you guys willing to go out there and get a hitter?

Hall: Thanks. I believe another year under their belts will make a big difference, just as it did for Stephen Drew last season. With hitters like Drew, Upton, Mark Reynolds, Jackson, Chris Young, Felipe Lopez, Chad Tracy, Eric Byrnes, Snyder, etc., I truly believe we have the talent. And when the offense clicks as it did to start out last season, it can be explosive. If we do need a new part at some point, you bet we will entertain every option.

grams8: Are we really ready?

Hall: I certainly hope so. This is a very good team with what I consider one of, if not the, best rotations in the league. The addition of Garland to Webb, Haren, Doug Davis, Max Scherzer, Yusmeiro Petit, Juan Gutierrez, etc., is exciting. Adding Lopez, Scott Schoeneweis and Tony Clark helps this team as well. I am confident with the team we have reporting in a few weeks. GM Josh Byrnes and his staff have assembled a talented group.

dpwildcat: Are the D-backs planning on any uniform updates this season or the next? I'm hoping for something a little more traditional looking.

Hall: We hope to make these traditional over time and plan on no changes. The reaction to these uniforms has been tremendous from players and fans.

Brenly2001: With the economy waylaying season-ticket sales, what's up your sleeve to entice single-game purchasers?

Hall: We are doing pretty well with season tickets and are projecting to be where we were last year in overall tickets. We will need to do well in the first month, where we have 18 home games on the calendar. Fortunately, that is a wonderful month to be at the ballpark with the roof open. Baseball should not be hit too hard, as we are the most affordable of all the sports and we are the most affordable within the sport.

cnaylor62: Congrats on your new title, you deserve it! I was season-ticket holder last year on the suite level, but on the 3rd level this year. What new is happening on the suite level for this year?

Hall: Thank you. Glad you're back with us. We have taken the six suites down the left-field line where the Redheads section was and blown them out to be one huge all-you-can-eat family section. The assigned seating in front is just $25 for seasons and $30 for regular, non-premier games. Great deal.

murdog1: What changed so much financially that the team was able to make a $6.25 million deal with Garland, but could not make the same offer to Randy Johnson? It really hurts to see the Unit in a Giants uniform.

Hall: Hate to see Randy go. We needed time to see how the payroll was looking based on other deals before being able to commit to that salary. This signing obviously took place much later in the offseason. We are really fortunate to add Garland to this staff. Bringing in a 29-year-old World Series veteran from the American League is good for us. He is a notorious innings eater and will fit in nicely.

dpwildcat: Where do in the valley would you like to see the team spring train when they leave Tucson?

Hall: If we need to leave Tucson, we will have several great options to choose from. I think the next one or two team complex, regardless of whether or not it includes us, should be in the east or northeast valley. Perhaps even south near Tempe or Chandler. But the Westside is becoming a bit oversaturated with the additions of spring complexes in Glendale and Goodyear.

cherw: Will you still be accessible to fans as your were as president? Any changes as to how things were run when you were president?

Hall: You bet I will be! I love the interactions with our fans and employees. I will still be president as well, so not much should change.

murdog1: Do you think having a veteran like Clark on the roster from the beginning of the season will help these young players perform more consistently?

Hall: I absolutely do. Clark is such a calming, veteran voice. His presence is felt and needed in that clubhouse and dugout.

dbacker79: I agree, Derrick -- you deserve the new role! My season tix are on the 3rd deck. Who are the new food vendors this year?

Hall: Thank you as well. We are excited that Subway will be joining us this season.

godbacks2007: Derrick, the closer Webb gets to free agency, the less chances the D-backs have to sign him long term. I know his under contract for two more years, but I think all D-backs fans would love to have him under contract for much longer. Do you see this happening?

Hall: I agree it will be challenging. We are lucky that we still have the two years. There is no doubt it is rare to have an ace like Brandon. There are many moving parts here that make it complicated at this time. But, know that we absolutely love and respect Webby and hope to find a solution that works for both.

murdog1: Will dbacks.com be updated with light rail information for those who wish to this as an option for getting to and from Chase Field?

Hall: That is a great point. We will get some info up there for you. It is going to be great. The station is literally in front of the stadium. We are currently working with light rail on some promotions for you. We are considering giving a day of game price reduction for those who ride, for example.

Hall: We are out of time. Thanks again D-backs fans! I look forward to seeing you down in Tucson in the next few weeks and here at Chase Field for what should be an exciting 2009 campaign.

Arizona Diamondbacks

First impression: This, actually, is the same impression as last year, which was: Are the D’backs regulars ready to score some runs for the pitching staff? They’re certainly athletic enough. They’re certainly getting their at-bats. And they’re certainly swinging a lot. This is the club that had five guys hit 15 home runs or more, and they all struck out at least 100 times. They are what management built, which is a young team that would both contend and help manage the organizational debt. So, a stunningly professional April gave way to five imprecise months, and a reasonable lead in the NL West gave way to Manny and the Dodgers, but some really good-looking players – Chris Young, Justin Upton, Stephen Drew, Mark Reynolds – got another year’s education. Maybe that makes for two good months rather than one, or maybe even three good months, which might be enough in this division and with this starting rotation. Of course, that’s only if the bullpen holds up, too.

Competition: Here’s the loose plan, so far: Chad Tracy and Eric Byrnes, both coming off seasons made difficult by injury, will platoon. Against a right-handed starter, Tracy plays first. Against a lefty, Byrnes plays left. And Conor Jackson, who batted .300 and scored 87 runs last season, plays where the other guy isn’t. But, and here’s the thing, Byrnes doesn’t seem too excited about the platoon thing, due to the fact he might have lost his full-time gig because of a tear-away hamstring. Byrnes is owed $11 million in each of the next two seasons, a lot for a part-time player (and the guy who starts against lefties gets the short end of it) on a mid-market team.

Hot seat: Away from the glare of a pennant race, big ol’ right-hander Jon Rauch put together four nice months pitching for a team very few people went to see and hardly anyone watched on television. Away from Washington and acquired by the Diamondbacks to save a suffering bullpen, Rauch posted a 6.56 ERA and allowed a home run every four innings.

Next: Right-hander Max Scherzer has some of the best stuff in the game, starting with a fastball that touches 98 mph and offspeed pitches that meant 66 strikeouts in 56 innings last season. Two years out of Missouri, he’s a near lock to make the Diamondbacks rotation.

FWIW Bob Melvin at fanfest said Tracy and Clark would handle 1st base with CJ in lt field.

I think this is a .500 team at best this year. I HATE the make up of this team offensively. Too many guys that whiff WAAAAAY too often. Reynolds is awful. I'd of thrown that guy to the curb yesterday. The worst of it is, this team needs a STAR offensively .....and they dealt that guy to the White Sox (basically because of their lovefest with Eric Byrnes.....ERIC BYRNES!!!). This team is really no different than the Rays....no one will go to these games unless they're in the playoffs (which I don't see).

There's still some good young talent but Josh Byrnes didn't do anything to improve the team. They lost Dunn, O-Dog and Randy Johnson and replaced them with Jon Garland and Felipe Lopez  They've traded away a lot of prospects over the past couple years and don't have the farm system or financial resources to make many moves. The NL West is a weak division. They're still contenders but I like their chances less now than in 07 or 08.

The belief here is that RJ just wanted out. O-Dog wanted to much money and he was always injured. I wish we had kept Dunn.

HEY - I live "here" too and that is a load of crapRJ volunteered to play for half what he played for last year....so say $6 million and they said they didn't have that much money and then signed Garland for more..................now there was a time line and they thought they might need more to get 2B covered but got Felipe Lopez for a pretty good price. IF ODog had been willing then to play for what he won't get now, that would have been different. They already have a problem with AB for their OF and signing Dunn would have just complicated it more - while they don't have anyone else who will hit 40 HR like Dunn will, they don't need to add his strikeouts to the rest of the group. The main problem there and above is the huge hangover the organization has because of the STUPID contract they gave Byrnes after his career year.

Questions to locals: Is Melvin serious about playing Conor Jackson in LF? I think he used to play 3B at Cal and he can run a bit. I think he's up for the role, but there have been other players who have struggled with the transition. There are four guys (Jackson, Tracy, Reynolds & Byrnes) sharing three chairs at LF, 3B & 1B. It's a bigger problem for fantasy players than the real Diamondbacks.

Eephus - before the RJ comment got me on a rant I was going to say that those BP projections are really out of whack.

Here is the deal (wrong in several papers today) on the Diamondbacks plans (verified on Monday with someone who works for them)..............Tracy will essentially platoon with Eric Byrnes, so....

1B - Tracy (vs RHP); Jackson (vs LHP)

LF - Jackson (vs RHP; Byrnes (vs LHP)

So yes they are serious about playing Conor in LF - and I think he hit better when he was there because he feels more comfortable about his defense there vs first base. Don't forget he was an outfielder before he was moved to first base.

Reynolds would have to totally fall out of favor AND have the other three raking to get moved off third base especially since Tracy doesn't do well against LHP and is already in the lineup vs RHP.

If 200+ SOs and 30+ E didn't cause Reynolds to fall out of favor, what would he have to do to make this happen? If Byrnes ends up as the righty part of a platoon, those will be 250 very expensive ABs

I will try to dig up some of my links later. I dont think that RJ volunteered to play for 1/2. I for one really wanted him to stay. I dont think Garland is any type of improvement unless RJs back goes out again.

Byrnes contract is one of the dumbest in baseball history as far as I am concerned.

They are serious about CJ in LF. That is his natural position. He was not a fan of 1st base.

I am going to back off a little and agree with hook here. I do think your numbers are off a bit. 1/2 would be 7.5 million and Giants offered 8 mill so we would have to at least match that. I still think RJ was not happy here and did not want to stay. If he really wanted to stay would he leave for 1/2 mill? It is not like he needs the money and he could have set up some incentives in the contract. 10 mill if he stays healthy?Anyway I am a big fan of his and sorry to see him go. I really wanted to see him get his 300th win here while wearing Dback uni.

RJ's offer to play at half price.
Johnson told the club he was willing to play for half of his 2008 salary, $10 million, to stay in Arizona.

SPRING TRAINING NEWS

Nick Piecoro

Covering the DiamondbacksMelvin, Byrnes & Father Bullpen in TucsonSpring training isn’t officially underway until tomorrow, when the pitchers and the catchers, well, pitch and catch, out at the Kino Sports Complex on Sunday.

But in a bit of a bizarro world start to things here, who else walked into the clubhouse early Saturday morning but reliever Tony Pena, aka Adriano Rosario, aka The Guy Who Is Always Late To Tucson.

You see, when you lie to the U.S. government about your name, which Pena did some years back, the feds tend subsequently to be a little hesitant in giving you a visa. But credit the Diamondbacks’ front office for diligently securing Pena’s visa early this year and getting him into camp on time.

Pena, expected to be one of the club’s primary setup men, came through immediately: Not long after he walked in, he greeted bullpen coach Glenn Sherlock with a new nickname: Father Bullpen. We like that. It just might stick.

Others spotted in or around the clubhouse on Saturday: Eric Byrnes, Chad Qualls, Tony Barnette, Chris Roberson, Seth Etherton, Luke Carlin, Esmerling Vasquez, Reid Mahon and the Australian duo of Trent Oeltjen and Travis Blackley. Oh, and coaches Sherlock, Bryan Price and Chip Hale.

Not the most star-studded of casts, but no one was actually required to make an appearance. All guys have to do is let the team know they arrived in town, then show up Sunday for the workout.

(By the way, if you’re looking to catch Sunday’s workout, we were told it’s not going to start until noon-ish. Players who still need to get their physicals done will be doing so in the morning.)

Byrnes held court for a little while, as did manager Bob Melvin, but other than that, it was all quiet at TEP (aka TLB – Tucson ‘Lectric Ballpark).

***

Some quotes Melvin’s session with reporters:

*On Max Scherzer’s condition: “He had a little soreness after the fall league, probably set him back. He’s probably not going to be throwing a pen the first day. He’s probably going to be a couple of days late as far as throwing a bullpen. Have a few more catch sessions before he gets on the mound. With the length of spring training, I don’t see any issues with him being ready for the start of the season.

*On prospect Daniel Schlereth, last year’s first-round pick out of UA: “He’s a standout guy right away, a power left-hander who has two plus pitches. He’s a guy that’s pitched in the Pac and had success. He could be a very quick mover in our organization and a guy I’m excited about taking a look at in this camp. He’s a first-round pick and when you have a college kid you expect him to move quickly and I think that’ll be the case with him.”

*On the need to release the other 103 names of players who tested positive in 2003: “I think if we’re going to move past this there’s a pretty good chance that all these names are going to have to come out so that we can move past it. You don’t want a trickle down effect every couple of months with somebody else where you’re readdressing this issue. … It’s kind of a double-edged sword. You don’t want to see those names come out, but I don’t know how you get past it unless those names do come out.”

*On Conor Jackson seeing time at first base against lefties: “(He) could, but Tony Clark also needs his at-bats. He’s been a key figure for us, too. To utilize his role to be that pinch hitter you expect to do the damage later in games, he does need some reps and some at-bats. I think you saw last year in San Diego he wasn’t able to get that. For him to be able to stay sharp he’s going to need some starts at first base. It’s certainly a possibility for Conor, but it’s not a central focus right now. Really not leaning toward that right now but it is an option.”

*On Manny Ramirez’s potential impact: “He had a little effect last year, so I would think he would potentially have an effect … He’s going to sign with the Dodgers, I think. I’ve already counted on that. When that happens I’m not altogether sure and if they were to go a couple of weeks into camp, if that would really affect him. I’m assuming he’s going to be with the Dodgers.”

*On the club’s mentality: “I think we have a little bit of an edge going into the season. Obviously we felt a little better after the 2007 season, even though we didn’t make it to the World Series. We were a team that was in first place for three quarters of the season and then didn’t finish there. I think we learned some things about ourselves last year, had a target on our back last year, so it was a little different feeling starting the season. Yet we had a great month of April and couldn’t follow it up, couldn’t find our rhythm the rest of the season. Second place isn’t where anybody wants to finish, it isn’t where we wanted to finish. I think you’ll see a little bit of an edge from these guys this year coming into camp.”

***

Byrnes’ quotes:

*On his new role as the fourth outfielder: “Yeah, I don’t really look at it that way. Each year, when I’ve come into spring training, almost every year I’ve played this game I’ve had to compete and fight for playing time. I don’t look at this year as really any different than any other year. Sure there were times when I was coming off good years and I had a more secure spot. I went up and down nine times with the A’s. I’ve had good years and not had starting jobs coming into the next year. I’ve been released. This is nothing I’m not used to. This hasn’t been, you know, this fairy tale baseball career that I’ve lived. This has been something that I’ve fought and I’ve earned.”

*How he’s feeling: “I feel great. I feel real good. Going full speed right now. (Started going) actual full speed a couple of weeks ago.”

*So you’re trying to win a starting job? “Yes. Absolutely. I don’t look at my role as anything other. I’m coming in here and trying to fight for playing time. That’s it. Every time Bo-Mel goes to write the lineup card, I expect he’ll put the best nine players in there. My goal is to be one of the best nine. As far as I’m concerned, every year you come in there’s opportunities out there. The way I look at it, if I go out there and I’m healthy and play the way I’m capable of playing, I don’t see any reason why he wouldn’t want to put my name in that lineup. That’s my approach to the situation.

“But even before we start talking about that, my biggest thing is, let’s get on the field first. All that other stuff is just a bunch of (BS) unless I’m healthy. It doesn’t matter. I just need to get healthy, get on the field and play the way I’m capable of playing. At no point last year, no point, not one day in spring training, not one day during the season, was I healthy. It’s my own fault. But I wasn’t healthy one day. I continued to try to push through it. Ultimately it cost me the season. Obviously it wasn’t good for myself or the team.”

*How long have you been hitting? “I’ve been hitting this whole time. I’ve actually been hitting since, I started hitting in September. Hitting wise I’m as confident with the work I’ve done this off-season as I’ve ever been coming into spring training.”

* Knowing you weren’t healthy, has it been hard to hear the criticisms about the contract? “No because it comes with the territory. People are going to say what they’re going to say but as far as I’m concerned I don’t play this game for people’s opinions. I play it for first and foremost my enjoyment of competition, my enjoyment of being out there. Look, people are going to write some great things about you when you’re doing well but when you’re going poorly people are going to have negative things to say. As far as I’m concerned, look, the only thing I did wrong last year was actually play and play when I shouldn’t have. We’ll see what people say. If it’s July and all of a sudden I’m heading to an All-Star game, was it a bad contract, I don’t know.”

*Disappointed to hear trade rumors? “No, not at all. It makes sense. The Diamondbacks made an investment in me and didn’t get the return that they had hoped for in the first year of the contract. I don’t blame them. Nothing ever came up, the rumors were just that. They never talked to me about it.

“As far as trades, the whole fourth outfielder thing, or anything else, none of that bothers me. First of all, the trade thing, I didn’t really plan on going anywhere. As far as I was concerned, I wanted to be here. I have enough confidence in my ability to know that if I’m 100 percent, I’m going to play. I mean that. It’s something that I’m going to have to earn, something I’m going to have to go out there and take.”

Congrats to both Byrnes and Pena, who added new family members this off-season, Byrnes a daughter named Chloe and Pena a son, Justin.

Orlando Hudson moves to enemy territory. :goodposting:

He could have stayed with the D backs for more but he thought he could get more and now he has less. In the long run this could be really good for the Dbacks. The doggers got an aging 2nd baseman on the downside of his career and we got the doggers 17th first round pick. Win win for Dbacks.

According to MLB.com, Orlando Hudson’s new deal with the Dodgers is for one year and $3.38 million, with another $4.6 million in incentives.

It makes us wonder how we should feel about it.

From what we understand, before the 2008 season, the Diamondbacks offered Hudson a four-year deal worth about $29 million. It would have been for roughly $5 million in ’08 and $24 million for the next three years -- his first three free-agent years.

Apparently, Hudson responded with a huge counteroffer, a deal so unrealistic that it actually upset people with the Diamondbacks. Hudson wound up avoiding arbitration in 2008 with a $6.25 million deal, and you know how his offseason unfolded.

On the one hand, you could say Hudson tried to break the bank and lost out, big time.

I will be at ST game tomorrow. Webb and Garland are scheduled to pitch.
Ouch. Is today a sign of worse to come for Webb?
I just got home frome the game. I had a good time at the park but we got beat pretty bad. Tracy did not look good at all in my opinion. He seemed lethargic. Almost like he did not want to be playing. I was not aware that Webb was scratched so that kind of sucked. I was sitting with some scouts and I was watching their radar guns. Garland was avg 89 mph and once I saw 91. Slaten hit 100 once. That seemed strange to me but it registered on more then one gun :? It was good to see Schlereth I like the way he looks. J Skelton played some. He looks really small for a catcher. Anyway I had about as much fun as you can when getting shelled like that.

This guy is going to be good.

PEORIA, Ariz. -- Max Scherzer was all smiles on Sunday afternoon and it wasn't only because his beloved Missouri Tigers were heading to the NCAA's Sweet 16.

The D-backs right-hander was pleased with the way his three-inning outing went, as he allowed two runs on five hits to the Padres. It was a marked improvement from his debut last week, when he allowed five runs and lasted just two-thirds of an inning.

"I could feel the strike zone better as the game progressed," said Scherzer as he checked his phone for updates on the final few seconds of the Missouri game.

Some of the hits that Scherzer gave up came on sliders, a pitch he was working on throwing late in counts.

"I was really trying to emphasize throwing my offspeed stuff," he said.

Webb talking smack

The Diamondbacks will meet the Dodgers this week during their season-opening, nine-day homestand at Chase Field, and ace pitcher Brandon Webb had a message for Arizona fans concerning Los Angeles slugger Manny Ramirez.

Manny can be Manny all he wants, Webb said, but there's no way he's going to duplicate last season's heroics, when Ramirez hit .396 with 17 home runs and 53 RBIs in just 53 games after his trade from the Boston Red Sox.

"He's a great hitter, but having to worry about slowing that guy down? I don't think he's going to be doing the same thing he did last year, to be honest with you," Webb said Saturday. "He's not going to be the person we're going to let beat us."

Asked if he was certain that Ramirez isn't capable of duplicating last season's performance, Webb held firm in his assertion.

"No, I honestly don't think so - unless it's a video game," said Webb, who is in line to pitch against Ramirez and the Dodgers on Saturday.

Strong words from a division foe. But Webb already has one Cy Young Award and last year won a National League-best 22 games, so he a right to talk a little smack.

Reminded, however, that a player such as Ramirez is likely to respond to such comments, Webb just shrugged his shoulders.

"Yeah, well, that's all right," he said. " . . . Bring it."

I am as big a Webb fan as is out there but I am not sure he should be talking like this until he does better against Manny.

Why did Upton not start today? Is he hurt? Doghouse? Suck? What gives?

ETA: And Reynolds? Same question.

PHOENIX -- Brandon Webb is optimistic he will be able to make his next scheduled start April 17 against the Giants despite being scratched from his start Saturday.

Webb complained of shoulder stiffness during his Opening Day start last week, and he underwent an MRI on Friday -- results of which were not yet available when he met with the media prior to batting practice.

Arizona manager Bob Melvin said the MRI was more precautionary, and that he expected Webb to be ready to go next Friday in San Francisco.

"I think it's more just peace of mind than anything else," Melvin said of the test.

Webb received treatment from the team's trainers during Thursday's off-day and reported feeling better.

"I feel like we're getting somewhere with this now," Webb said.

"I know yesterday he felt a lot better," Melvin said. "He was in here getting some work down with our training staff. The stiffness was out of there, so hopefully that's progress."

Yusmeiro Petit will start in Webb's place Saturday.

"I haven't missed many starts in six years," said Webb, who has thrown over 200 innings in each of his full Major League seasons. "It's tough for me to sit out and watch."

*Manager Bob Melvin said the results on Brandon Webb’s MRI were in: It came back clean. So, as Webb thought originally, they’re saying his stiffness is muscular, not structural. He’s supposed to play catch tomorrow and there’s hope that he’ll be able to slot back into the rotation on Friday in San Francisco.

*Melvin made a double-switch in the eighth inning, removing Mark Reynolds from the game at third base and inserting Augie Ojeda as the club protected a 6-3 lead. As much as Reynolds probably doesn’t like it, it is probably the best thing to do at this point to win games.

*Similarly, there is nothing wrong with Justin Upton. Melvin just went with Eric Byrnes tonight in right field. Byrnes went 1 for 3 with a hit by pitch and a walk.

*Beyond the results themselves (3 for 3 with a home run and a walk), another good sign from Chris Young was his pitch recognition on Friday night. During his first at-bat of the night in the third inning, he laid off two off-speed pitches from Dodgers RHP James McDonald and then hit a fastball for a home run. In the fourth, he hit a breaking ball for a double. In the eighth, he laid off three off-speed pitches to draw a walk.

PHOENIX -- Brandon Webb still is not concerned about his right shoulder, but the D-backs ace is on the 15-day disabled list.

The team elected to put him on the DL, retroactive to April 7, after he still felt some soreness in his shoulder while playing catch Sunday morning.

"I want to make sure we're 100 percent when I go back out there," Webb said.
