*** Official SF 49ers 2015 thread *** Chip Kelly new HC (1 Viewer)

Smith and Willis weren't playing to their reputations the last year or so, but losing Willis even at 80% really stings. I like picking up Dockett to replace Smith. Carradine will develop into an upgrade on Ray McDonald IMO. But the Bowman/Willis combo's ability to play run defense out of the nickel package is what made the defense special. Borland doesn't have the physical talent to do that.

If they are able to replace Crabtree with Torrey Smith I think that's an upgrade.

Losing Iupati isn't a huge deal assuming that guy they drafted last year with the torn ACL is any good. I think the offensive line will be better next year just from getting Boone back for a while offseason and Davis back healthy at RT.

This team is moving into ugly mode. I predicted 8-8 last season at this point this season I would be surprised if they get even close to that.

I strongly disagree that torrey smith is an upgrade on crabtree. I think they are both terrible but smith is an older version of terrible who runs straight down the field.

Willis is the heart and soul of that defense (combined with Smith). They just played and played hard. The defense drops into the bottom 1/3 of the league is you ask me. Especially because Bowman will probably never be the same

With those guys gone I think you really see the weakness in the cb and in the offense this year.

Crabtree was awful last year. Smith stretches the field which they need a ton more than another mediocre possession guy.

Defense was really good last year without either Willis or Bowman, so you'd have to be pretty down on Mangini to think they will slip quite that far (and maybe that's justified).

I don't think they will be very good next year but that is more a reflection on the coaching and skepticism that Kaepernick takes the step forward that they desperately need, though I haven't written him off and I'm hoping for the best on that front.

Maybe I am just jaded because Smith has been on my fantasy teams too much but I think he gets too much credit as a 'field stretcher'. I just don't think he is a very good wr and maybe upgrade could be used in this situation but this is like upgrading from crappy to slightly less crappier.

To me its about the heart and soul and I just don't think they will piece it together otherwise. Add in a terrible offense without Gore (once again a leader) and this is a team that has falls apart and turns on itself written all over it

This team needs a Colts type season where they can grab a franchise QB in the 2016 draft. There will be 2 at a minimum. Whoever gets the #1 pick in 2016 will fare far better than the Bucs will when they take Freeman v2.

Yeah, the only way this team is any good next year is if the offense takes a dramatic step forward. If they can get a competent field stretcher out of Smith and Simpson to pair with Boldin, and better pass protection from the OL, maybe Kaep surprises us. Not holding my breath though.

Huh? Smith is actually younger than Crabtree, and while he isn't great, he's clearly an upgrade IMO.

A month back I said in one of these threads that this is starting to look like a 6 or 7 win team next year...

I take that back, they're playing for the number one overall pick.

Hyde > Gore

Torrey > Crabtree

Willis missed the last 10 games last year and they went 4-6 with him out.

Still have a chance at Iupati.

They're awful... I'm prepared for them to be obsolete for a little while - The last couple of years were fun.

Thanks for the memories JH, go kill yourself Jed/Trent.

That and they have already been planning on the loss of Iupati. J Smith has been playng less and less over the last few years and has been contemplating retirement every year over that span so his departure has been expected.

The Willis retirment decision is a bit of a shocker since it was reported he was doing well but he is not the same great player he used to be. They still have a ton of talent on the team and the new staff has yet to coach a game. Plenty of things in place to keep this team contending. Let's what until the season gets undreway beofre we decalre them playing for the 1st pick. Most Niner homers who pay attention know that they have been planning on losing most of the players who are moving on for quite some time.

To call this offseason anything less than terrible is delusional.

Let's be more precise here. It's terrible because of what happened with the coaching staff and the fact that they appear to have a young, idiot owner who is in way over his head.

The roster moves have not been terrible to date. I can quibble but I think they have largely done the right thing. Losing what looked like a future HoFer to retirement unexpectedly would be a tough pill to swallow for any franchise in the league but you can't really hammer the team about that.

Not really if you have been paying attention. Point is, none of it is really shocking and most of it has been planned for. This team isn't going to play for the number one pick next year, that's delusional.

HELLO EXACTLY!!!

Bad transactions, unexpected injuries or retirements, etc. can be handled properly...

An owner like Jed is poison... Recovering from someone like this takes a long time. Either until he figures it out (which feels like a long time away) or he leaves.

When the guy with the team name in his screen name is on one side of the discussion and....
And what? I am Niner home in a Niner homer thread. I am also not a blind homer either, I hate the Yorks and didn't like losing Harbaugh but this team isn't all of sudden dead and the moves that have been happening are not that shocking.

The window where you had a great coach and teams hadn't figured out your gimmick qb and your all pro RB and LB were still playing has shut. They are much closer to dead than not.

This is all smoke and mirrors. Everyone is writing off the 49ers, so I say they'll be playing with nothing to lose and they'll win 10 games.

Positive thinking yields positive results, right? ;)

The front office is denying they are shopping Kaep. Which probably means they are shopping him.

Edit: Kaep for Cutler. You heard it here first.

Whose the leader on this team now? When Kaep looks like he is going to cry after he throws an int who is going to rally the troops?

Someone mentioned that this team is still loaded with talent but I don't see it. I see a team badly in decline.

yes smith is an upgrade over crabtree in that 5.5/10 is greater than 5/10

I am however shocked that smith is younger than crabtree...that's just how useless I think he is. I just figured he was one of those older guys that refuses to run more than one route

So you went from strongly disagreeing that he was an upgrade to agreeing, and you just guess about age? Sounds like you've got your finger on the pulse.

I guess its on how you define upgrade...I don't define it as bringing in crap for crap

And it sounds like you are a jacka$$ - congradulations

I edited the post because I figured it would be too complex for you....maybe your mom can come and explain it to you.

Right below that post you quoted jacka$$ is this

"Maybe I am just jaded because Smith has been on my fantasy teams too much but I think he gets too much credit as a 'field stretcher'. I just don't think he is a very good wr and maybe upgrade could be used in this situation but this is like upgrading from crappy to slightly less crappier."

As opposed to yours, which has graced us so eloquently with "your mom" lines, name calling, etc.

I'm not even sure if what you've written today is in English, but it certainly isn't coherent.

I have added to the discussion my friend...try having your mom or dad read through the posts slowly for you. That might help with your comprehension. Remember...sound the words out, it helps.

Slower...you are still going to fast. Maybe try not eating so much sugar. It will help you concentrate

That being said you have managed to pollute this thread enough so you are going on ignore.

Now that you agree on Smith, do you agree on Hyde?

Willis retiring actually has me pretty sad. My favorite player in the league. Never got to see him play live. His story, talent and character is all top notch. If injuries didn't get him so much over the last year I would say he would've been a First Ballot. Clearly, I'm bias though.

If I was a niners fan instead of just a Willis fan I would be pretty pissed off right now. Things aren't looking good. Hopefully, you guys can find a cure for the Jed virus.
