Oporto played the game they needed to advance. Atlético had a total of 3 shots on goal, 9 shots total. That's simply not good enough for a situation like this. I'm pretty pissed that Resino didn't put Forlán in the starting 11. He's such a poacher and always manages to create at least one or two counter attacking opportunities. Sinama-Pongolle might have some better skills, but he's nothing but a stopgap IMO.

Now it will be seen if Atlético has any fight in them to try and regain a CL bid for next year. It will be telling if Kun wants this or not. if he plays hard, he'll stay, otherwise, you might see him playing for Inter next year. Yuck.

 
Apparently, ESPN2 was out for people with digital cable and not basic cable, in Buffalo anyway.

There are some great match-ups coming in this first knock-out round. I've seen very little of the other leagues - mostly just highlight shows - so don't pretend to be an expert. However, I would not be surprised if ManU, Chelsea and Arsenal are all knocked out by their Italian opponents this round. I think Inter and Juve will be very tough, and Roma looked great in the one game I've seen them play this season (humiliating Chelsea at Stadio Olimpico). Barca of course is a monster, and Bayern is my surprise pick for the final 4. I would not be surprised to see England with 1 or 2 teams in the final 8 and, depending on matchups, none in the final 4.

Well, I couldn't have been much more wrong about the english and Italian clubs in this competition, but at least my sleeper pick is looking good.With four english teams in the next draw and no more country protection, its likely we'll get an EPL matchup in the quarter-finals.
 
I'm hoping for a Barca / Bayern Munich draw. Maybe some purists will balk, but the prospect of two teams with that much attacking talent (and a corresponding penchant for some slack defensive play) would seem to be a recipe for a really exciting tie.

And yeah, I should have included Barcelona in the discussion of teams with the attacking talent to challenge Munich. It was a silly oversight.

 
Bayern are getting a bit overrated in this thread. Ribery is world class, but apart from him they have a couple of players who are good but no better. Just because they put 12 past a absolutely shockingly poor Sporting side doesn't mean much. Seriously, look at the highlights of the goals in that last match, Sporting were a joke defensively.

This basically means St. Louis is going to get shafted because Vancouver and Portland are virtual locks.It's a shame, because St. Louis is actually a fairly strong soccer community.

The soccer park isn't really an arena, per say. More like a grouping of a bunch of soccer fields with one 'main' field for higher profile matches. They'd really have to do some building to make it viable, but the location it's in isn't terrible. It's located near the I-270/I-44 interchange, which is pretty heavily commuted.If not in 2008, maybe in 2010 or 2011. But, St. Louis will have an MLS team eventually.

This is just bad posting. Klose, Toni, and Schweinsteiger are all absolutely world class players.

yes I agree with all of this. Having the land to build on is a huge step forward though. So many plans for other stadiums have stalled on this piece. Having the land and facilities in place could lower the overall cost of a stadium to the $40M instead north of $100 that others have been spending.

Why go to a pub for Liverpool - ManU when FSC is bringing us a scintilating triple header tomorrow of Stoke-Everton, Newcastle-Hull and Fulham-Bolton?

:deadhorse: I understand them wanting to show all of the teams. And with a 38 game schedule (and being able to show 3-4 games each week) they can. But they had to know Liverpool and ManU would be in the race for the title at this point. Why did FSC agree to let this game get away from them when they signed their contract?
 
Just FYI, it looks like there's been more than a bit of blowback for not including Forlán in the starting 11 agains Porto. It was a big gamble (and a dumb one at that) for Resino and it honesly may have cost him the coaching position in 2009-2010.

There are rumors that Atlético has contacted Rafa regarding his interest in the job....

Forlan had been pretty spectacular in the last two la Liga matchdays, I don't know how he was left off.

Agreed. Absolutely deplorable that we won't get it here.I'm sure Setanta will have it, but I don't want to pay extra for it.

I totally agree. I'm not going to blame the 0-0 draw on that alone. Lord knows that Maxi and Simao didn't do a GD thing that game. It's like they were expecting Kun to win it by himself or something. He's a game winner, but he needs the ball.Anyway, Kun has been pretty outspoken about the move to leave out Forlán. Thats good to see as he is showing his respect and camaraderie for Forlán, while showing that he takes this loss seriously.If Abel needs to go in order to keep Kun (or Forlán), then so be it. No love lost there for me.

ManUnited still has a very comfortable lead in the premiership, but this should really help the scousers' confidence in the CL. Rafa has been successful in the past when he's been able to focus entirely on one competion. The last year he won the CL, I think Liverpool finished over 20 points behind Chelsea in the premiership. After this week's results, I count Liverpool together with ManU and Barca as teams no one wants to draw in the quarterfinal round.
