Nothing confirmed by US Soccer but Fernando Clavijo tweeted that Tab Ramos will get the U20 head coaching job and that Caleb Porter will get the U23 head coaching job. We all know about Tab, but Caleb may be unknown to some. He played at Indiana University and had a quick cup of coffee in MLS. He became an assistant coach at Indiana for a year and then got a great position at Akron University starting in 2006, in which he helped transform into one of best best programs in the country. Akron was the team that had produced 5 of the first 8 players drafted in the MLS Superdraft last season.
Is Porter keeping his day job?
This is all rumor so I have no idea. I know Porter signed a 5 year deal with Akron a couple of years ago. I would think you could keep your day job and be the U23 coach as I don't think qualifying or the Olympics themselves would overlap the normal college season. Might affect what ever spring program his team has as that will be during qualifying.

Montreal should be able to find 10 decent players from these rules to start their team.

NBC, Fox, and ESPN submitted their bids to FIFA today for the rights to broadcast 2018/2022.

There is a press conference scheduled for Friday in which the winner might be announced.

WOW! What a way to win for Arsenal.

That's 7 points in their group and they've played their two toughest matches already, drawing at Dortmund and now winning at Marseille.

Now if they could just play like this domestically...

Spain leads FIFA rankings, U.S. falls to No. 34

ZURICH (AP) -- Spain extended its lead at the top of FIFA's monthly world rankings on Wednesday, as 2012 European Championship qualifying group winners Greece and Denmark entered the top 10.

Spain won its two Euro 2012 qualifying matches this month while No. 2 Netherlands lost one, to Sweden.

Germany and South American champion Uruguay stayed third and fourth, respectively. Brazil rose two to No. 5 followed by Italy and England.

Greece rose three to share eighth place with Portugal, which lost to the Danes and faces a playoff to advance to the Euro 2012 finals.

Argentina, which lost a 2014 World Cup qualifier against Venezuela, is tied at No. 10 with Denmark.

Japan leads Asian nations at No. 17, and 19th-placed Ivory Coast is the best African country.

Mexico heads CONCACAF members at No. 22, and the United States drops three to No. 34. Former U.S. coach Bob Bradley vaulted over his old team, leading African champion Egypt up seven places to No. 29.

Montenegro fell 13 places to No. 39 despite reaching the Euro 2012 playoffs. Estonia at No. 59 is the lowest-ranked of the eight playoffs teams.

Wales used its two Euro 2012 wins to leap 45 places to No. 45.

Iraq rose 16 places to No. 91 after beating China in a World Cup qualifier, while Qatar, the 2022 World Cup host, rose eight to No. 92.

New Zealand, Oceania's best nation, did not play last month yet dropped 16 places to No. 104.

The rankings weigh all international matches over a rolling four-year cycle. FIFA took account of 136 matches in the past month, including qualifiers for the World Cup and continental championships in Europe and Africa.
US is a bit low, I would think they should be between 25-30 but I am not complaining. 34 means we have some work to do which isnt bad.England is to high. 7? really? I would put them between 10-15.

rest seems fine.

In more important news, MANCHESTER DARBY on Sunday! United vs $ity!!!

####### Facebook.

Watching the Arsenal game on DVR-delay and perusing Facebook at the same time, and guess what's in my "mini-feed"...."Arsenal claim a priceless 3 points at the Velodrome! Marseille 0-1 Arsenal. Full match report to follow"

<_<

The teams in the 25-50 range are very interchangeable IMO. All have flaws and all are decent enough given a good draw to make the second round of a world cup.

Mexico at 22 seems really, really low to me. I get that victories against Concacaf don't mean much. But does anyone really thing that Greece is that much better than Mexico?

remember that the formula is a running 4 year mathematical equation. That means it still includes Mexico's poor results in the last WCQing campaign. As those results get older and are eventually removed from the equation, they should go up to the top 15 or so, assuming their form holds.

plus they're also meaningless

I may be the only person who likes them. I have always enjoyed reading them and think they do a relatively good job most times judging where a team relatively lives compared to the rest of the world.I am glad FIFA uses them to seed teams, but it is not enough to make the general fan ever care about them.

I enjoy the bottom of the rankings more than the top. If Tuvalu gets a good result and jumps up 30 positions, we all win a little

Speaking of Grantland, I'm really enjoying their weekly Men In Blazers podcast, which is about all things Premier League. It's a fun listen, generally released every Wednesday. They do delve into the National team a little too. Last week they had a really good interview with Steve Cherundolo

Despite DeRo's career high and league leading 16th goal, DC could only manage a draw against Portland and have been eliminated from the playoffs after being in such a good position just before Pontius got hurt.

Due to this result, NY needs to get a point against Philly tomorrow night to land the last spot in the playoffs. NY Philly game is on espn2.

Pistons and Aston Villa. Hmmm. I could get behind that.Agbonlahor's a favorite player of mine, mostly because his raw speed is unstoppable on the video game.

I think it'd be tough to come up with a Lakers counterpart. ManU seems the best fit IMO, but I suppose you could choose Chels.

Decode please. Do you think NY, without Henry, can get it done tonight and get the point they need?

If neutrals are looking for a talking point tonight, pay attention to the right back for Philly. Sheannon Williams is decent sized, mobile, and has had an excellent sophomore season for Philly at age 21.

With Chandler looking like he might be the left back for the US, and Cherundolo not getting any younger, I think Williams will likely get his first call up in the January camps.

I mean, I'm officially over that team. They can take their grossly underproducing asses straight to their summer vacations as far as I'm concerned.Unless they make the playoffs

Is Lichaj still hurt?

Yes. He is not due to start training until late December early January. Shame because this was a crucial year for his development.

Pretty good double header tonight.

NY hosts Philly on ESPN2 at 8 Eastern

LA has its last group stage game tonight and needs a win to advance and win the group. Any other result and they go home empty handed. They are playing in Honduras against Montagua, who has no points after 5 games. LA will be with out Keane and possibly without Landon who may be a game time decision. Game is on FSC at 10 eastern.

Most have seen this by now on twitter but for those of you that have not, George John is being linked to both Everton and Wigan as a possible winter signing.

He makes a lot of sense to sign. His transfer fee will be inexpensive, his salary can take on multiples of what it is today and still be cheap for an EPL team, he is a solid player and carries a Euro passport.

Here are the possibilities for the last MLS playoff team, in order of likelihood of making the playoffs

NY: needs 1 point or (Portland does not win and Chicago does not win)

Portland: needs a win and NY loss

Chicago: needs a win, a NY loss and a non win from Portland.

wrong.we need to see just a little bit more from Orozco-Fiscal. You know, to fully appreciate just how mediocre he is.

I really like our depth at center back in the years to come, assuming we don't lose both Gonzo and John to other countries. The only draw back to Reams significant sophomore slump, is that he is the only lefty in the depth pool.

I can't tell you how much I hate the idea of a combined British team.

This is now confirmed. Ramos U20 and Porter U23. Porter to keep position at Akron
CHICAGO (Oct. 20, 2011) – U.S. Soccer has named Caleb Porter the head coach of the U.S. Under-23 Men’s National Team, effective immediately. Porter will lead the U-23 team in its quest to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games when they compete in CONCACAF qualifying in March next year.In addition to Porter, U.S. Soccer has hired former U.S. international and three-time World Cup veteran Tab Ramos to coach the U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team.“We are excited to have Caleb join our youth National Team staff,” said U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati. “Still early in his career, Caleb has been extremely successful and has demonstrated the ability to mentor and develop young players. A proven winner, we believe he will do a great job of leading our Under-23 Men’s National Team as they look to qualify for the Olympic Games next summer.”“Tab Ramos has been one of the pioneers of the sport in this country and will bring a wealth of experience in his role as the Under-20 Men’s National Team head coach. His addition to our national team program will be a benefit as we continue to concentrate on the development of our youth players at the international level.”The 36-year-old Porter will continue in his role as the head coach of the University of Akron, where he has coached since 2006 and led the Zips to the 2010 NCAA Division I National Championship."I am honored and feel extremely privileged to be given this once in a lifetime opportunity to lead the U.S. Under-23 Men’s National Team,” said Porter. “I'm eager to start the process of putting the pieces together in preparation for Olympic qualifying in March."Entering this year with a 90-13-10 record spanning five seasons, Porter has the highest winning percentage amongst any active NCAA Division I coach and helped Akron to top-five finishes for goals scored and goals-against-average in both the 2009 and 2010 seasons, the only program in the nation to do so. Porter was named the 2009 NSCAA National Coach of the Year, and has won the Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year award four consecutive times since 2007.Porter has recruited and developed 12 players at Akron who have been drafted into MLS in the last five years, including the 2009 No. 1 overall pick Steve Zakuani, No. 4 pick Teal Bunbury in 2010 and No. 2 pick Darlington Nagbe in 2011. Moreover, Akron set an MLS record with five of the first eight selections in the 2011 SuperDraft and seven draftees overall. In addition to his time at Akron, Porter has contributed to the U.S. Soccer youth national teams as a U-18 assistant coach and U.S. Soccer Development Academy scout. Porter began his professional playing career in 1998 with the San Jose Clash as the 26th overall pick in the MLS College Draft. He joined the Tampa Bay Mutiny the next season before a knee injury forced him to retire only a year later.Porter is hoping to lead the team to its second consecutive Olympic Games and its fifth since the tournament became an Under-23 event in 1992. The USA’s best finish came in 2000, when the team reached the semifinal round before falling to Spain and finishing fourth. The U.S. will hold a training camp next month from Nov. 7-16 in Germany that will feature players from both the U-23 and U-20 player pools. Ramos will run the camp along with U.S. Soccer Youth Technical Director Claudio Reyna. The full coaching staff and the team schedule for Germany will be announced at a later date, as well as future camps for the U-23s prior to qualifying.Ramos brings a wealth of professional and international experience to the U.S. National Team programs. He has been a member of the U.S. Soccer Federation Player Development Task Force since 2006, and after receiving his “A” coaching license in 2007, became the U.S. U-20 MNT assistant coach two years later. Ramos served as interim head coach in late 2011, guiding the U-20 Men through training camp and two friendlies in France."It is an honor for me to once again be representing the United States," said Ramos. "After ending my playing career, I've been working extremely hard to develop as a coach. I have had the opportunity to work with the youth national teams with some great coaches, and now I look forward to contributing in a much bigger way."The 1990 U.S. Soccer Male Athlete of the Year, Ramos had a storied career with the U.S. National Team. Earning 81 caps, he was a part of three World Cups. He tallied eight career goals, and is the only U.S. player to score at least one goal in World Cup qualifying in three different decades. With experience playing in Spain and Mexico, Ramos became the first player signed to Major League Soccer in 1995, completing seven seasons with the NY/NJ MetroStars.

My GD Atleti lose 2-0 to Udinese with goals coming in the 89th and 90+ minutes. Just pissing away an away point in Europa, with yet again, shockingly poor defense.

Can't believe this is happening.
It's going to be awesome. Club managers whining about giving up their players. Players whining about not getting selected or not getting selected. Commentators whining about whether Team GB is better or worse than the four nations. Fans raising expections. Team disappointing everyone. Psycho is a great choice to lead this :tfp:

The sport is broken financially in so many countries that it sometimes feels like MLS is one of the few (outside of the Bundesliga) who actually believes in balancing the books.

SPL champions Rangers in bankruptcy struggle

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) -- The owner of Scottish champions Rangers says he is trying to prevent the club being forced to seek bankruptcy protection.

Rangers is involved in two disputes with Britain's tax authority relating to payments made before Craig Whyte's takeover in May.

The larger of those cases could leave the Scottish Premier League leaders facing an estimated tax bill of 49 million pounds ($77 million).

Asked by Scottish TV about the prospect of Rangers going into financial administration, Whyte said: "We are actively doing all we can to avoid it.''

Whyte added Thursday: "There is a big job to do here and somebody has to sort it out and I'm the guy to do that.''

But he insists that "there is no chance of Rangers going out of business.''

Boy, a lot of people really don't like Klinsmann. Here is another article with someone taking shots at himhttp://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/soccer/10/20/hoeness.klinsmann.ap/index.html?sct=sc_t2_a6
That article is ridiculous. Really don't think computers are bending the cost curve at a club with Bayern's wage budget.
