Looks like the Union will have the honor of popping the cherry on MLS' new "Young Designated Player" category with the signing of 21-year old forward and Costa Rica international Josue Martinez from Saprissa.Love the Young DP rule, only carries a cap hit of $200k. Reports are that the Union paid $500k for the transfer. Hopefully this paves the way for similar young talent signings in MLS.
Jesus, an already young and talented team gets even younger. Very cool. Do you know if he is a DP for salary or for transfer fee? There are two levels to the youth DP in terms of the cap hitAges 21 to 23: $200,000.20 or younger: $150,000.
As it turns out, Novak just came out and said that Martinez will NOT be a DP, and that allocation money the team received from last year's Carlos Ruiz sale will go towards Martinez's cap hit. It's gotta be a ton of allocation money if the reports are true about paying Saprissa half a mil for the transfer.
So if I am not mistaken, by using the allocation money to buy down his cap hit to not be a DP, Philly still would have all 3 DP slots open right? Not that they have likely have 3 max slots open in the cap, but it still gives them some interesting flexibility going forward especially when you consider all their young talent (Adu, Mwanga, Williams, Captain Jack, Torres etc).

Not sure yet about Freddy. He hasn't been announced as a DP. He certainly is making more than the DP cap hit, but not sure if they plan to buy down his cap charge again like last year. Also didn't realize that in MLS transfer fees can be prorated over the life of a contract against the cap, kind of like an NFL signing bonus. May explain why Martinez isn't a DP

Reminder that the College Cup final 4 starts tonight. I don't follow college soccer much but always enjoy the final 4.

The two semi's are on ESPNU starting at 6 eastern.

The Generation Adidas team touring the Netherlands droppe their first match to the Ajax reserve team 4-2. GA goals by Dilly Duka and Corey Hertzog. Can't post the video from my phone, but Hertzog's goal was the result of an absolutely sick run by Omar Salgado through the Ajax defense. That kid is huge!
Here is the video. Look at the 1:53 mark for the sweet run. Hopefully this kid can get his head on straight. You can see why he was the #1 pick in the draft last year.http://www.mlssoccer.com/videos?catid=112&id=21424

It is also coming out now that teams can get around some of the transfer fee by offering friendlies. The Union will be playing a friendly against Saprissa which is obviously part of this dealhttp://www.tfcblog.ca/2011/12/09/partial-loophole-transfer-fees/

El Classico tomorrow!

Madrid is at home with a 3pt lead and a game in hand on Barca. Ronaldo and Messi both have 17 goals and 6 assists each. Game is on GolTV (which I still don't get in HD :kicksrock: )

I have a feeling this one will be chippy.

Pretty late start at 1PT. Was hoping for an earlier kickoff. Looks like I'll have to dvr it, or take a long lunch break.

UNC-Charlotte v. UNC-CH in the NCAA finals. Should this be a new thread?
I watched both games late last night. How Charlotte has made it this far is incredible. They are a very very average side and I can see why they are unranked. But they did enough to frustrate Creighton who could not break them down easily and got them into penalty kicks and won. Creighton did hit the cross bar twice in the game and then put on a poor display in PK's.In contrast the UNC UCLA game was great. Both sides attacking, with UCLA holding the lead twice only to see UNC come back twice, including one in the last 5 minutes. UNC also won on PK's.#1 ranked team in the county against an unranked side, for the whole shebang. I do find it strange that with all of the nice soccer stadiums we finally have in this country that they needed to hold this in what looked like a reconfigured baseball stadium in Alabama.

The location is strange especially when you consider the SEC basically doesn't compete in D1 soccer. That said, the youth national leagues are playing this weekend in Birmingham. The place is packed with coaches scouting. My girlfriend's son is playing there this weekend. It appears that there is some collaboration going on between the two events. What's really exciting about UNC-Charlotte is that the team is at least 1/3 local club players. This is a good soccer area, but the talent isn't that strong relative to other areas in the county. This matchup could be a huge boom to soccer in this area.

You'll be at work while I'm free to watch the games live and at my leisure?THE TIDES HAVE FINALLY TURNED

Albacete up 1-0 on AtleticoZ>hey
They ended up losing 2-1. Ugh. Thankfully it's a home-away series, and that was the away. They shouldn't have trouble handling a 3rd level team like Albacete at home if they start some decent players. But pretty typical for my Atleti since they have the ability to #### the bed at any time.

Dempsey missed a pk in the 86th that would have tied the game. And this was after the first goal against Fulham deflected in the net off of Clint. Rough day at the office. :(

Looks like it's time for our Toon swoon. It was fun while it lasted.
Norwich is playing well today, and Newcastle is lucky not to have a PK called against them on a clear hand ball. I don't think they'll fall apart as the pieces play well together and I really like the way they move the ball around the pitch. If Ba, Cabaye, and Krul can stay healthy I think they'll be in Europe at the end.

I think they are going to really struggle when Ba leaves for the Africa Cup of Nations.

This Clásico is Real's to lose IMO. They are rolling right now, playing at home and hitting on all 12 cylinders. Plus, Barça hasn't looked like the best team in the world this year unlike other years. But you never know... Barça has had Real's number in recent years. I'm just hoping for a good game.

I still stand by my comments that this Real team is specifically built to beat Barça. They can attack at the drop of a hat, either on a counter or through creative passes in the midfield. They have elite finishers who can make plays out of nothing, and the move of Ramos to CB has allowed a more flexible defensive positioning system on the back line.

Well, maybe I´m wrong about Newcastle as they are looking like crap as this Norwich game goes on. Really shaky on D.
For the most part, that back line has played really well but was a mess today. Steven Taylor out made a huge difference. Thought after he went out last week their defense looked really shaky.

####### Robin van Persie.
The dude IS Arsenal at this point. They've really come on with RvP in form like he is. As RvP goes, so goes Arsenal.
Actually Alex Song is playing lights out as well. RVP gets the goals but they wouldn't even be in games without Song. Those two have been phenomenal and the fact that that goal was Song to RVP seemed appropriate.
I agree completely, Song has been great this season (as always). And while RvP's form is certainly incredible, I think a big part of it is the partnership between Gervinho/Walcott/RvP. When Arshavin is in the game, the difference is night-and-day. The three of them have been on the same page for the last month or so and the team looks markedly worse when Arshavin is in the game, despite the fact that I think Arshavin may be a better technical player than Gervinho is.

They have been crap the moment Taylor and Coloccini went out. To be fair though, I don't know many teams that could recover from losing their two center backs in the same game. Coloccini should be back next game and I believe Williamson will be healthy as well. That was last year's pairing and they did well. With Cabaye and Tiote I think they can be pretty solid again.

I don't. For the most part Gervinho and Walcott have been pretty mediocre. I think their service has been made to look better because van Persie is putting everything into the net regardless of how it comes in. Walcott's decision making has reverted back to pre-2010 levels and Gervinho's finishing has been poor. I think they can both play much better though. Gervinho with time in the EPL and Walcott with some more experience. For Engand's sake it's important Walcott doesn't go the way of LennonIf I was to throw a third and fourth into Arsenal's success it would be Ramsey and Vermaelen. Ramsey doesn't get many assists, but he is the one releasing the wingers with some fantastic through-balls. Gervinho and Walcott really haven't had to do much outside of receive balls in space and use their speed to get in a half-way decent cross. Vermaelen because he solidified what was a pretty awful defense. Arsenal have only allowed two goals in the five games he has played in since his return (not to mention his three goals).Regardless of who may be playing second, third, fourth fiddle if Arsenal loses van Persie for any length of time they will struggle to finish anywhere in the top five.

No question that Vermaelen has been the team's best defender - and for most of the season, its only capable one. And Ramsey has been great; he reminds me a lot of Mathieu Flamini...not flashy, just a talented hard worker who gets the most of his physical skills. I like it.I really think Walcott has taken a step forward in the calendar year 2011. His decision making does still leave a bit to be desired, but IMO he's become a much more complete player (including occasional defensive responsibilities) and his finishing has gotten a lot better. I am still a bit lukewarm on Gervinho, but it looks like he and RvP get more in sync each time they play.

This is dead right. RVP has excelled in the false nine because Theo and Gervinho's movement have been exceptional. Theo's end product is improving. Gervinho's finishing has been bad, but he creates chances and makes great runs. The other player who deserves credit is Szczesny. He's the real deal. Not quite at Hart's and krul's level, but close.

Well, that's not the start Barca wanted.

Was ESPN's diagram right - Fabregas starting at center-forward? Is this a common thing? I don't see many Barca games....I know Pep likes his guys to be able to play all the positions...Mascherano in defense and all that...but Fabregas as CF? Interesting.
