Somebody correct me here, but it seems to me that when Chelsea played big games against the big teams, Mata looked pretty pedestrian.

Quite a strong statement. Even if he is overstating his case, what an enormous jump in talent we get in the position we needed it most.

I like Morrison... proably a push, IMO.I read the Scotsman (Glasgow newspaper online) to see some local response. Funny to read the comments which were full of teeth-gnashing and pulling of hair over this result. Common theme from those- Levein is a mess, the game shouldn't have happened (better to play a team more like their upcoming WCQ opponents), US players aren't any better than Scotland players- just more organized, fit and on the day determined.Seems to me, one team came wanting to win and Scotland not so much. Scotland also looked like they had no idea how to defend through outside of their defensive third, even after half-time... which to me is a coaching problem. US players had a ton of space and time out of the back and through the MF. Unacceptable at the international level. But I also saw plenty of players for Scotland gassing it, not getting back, so that doesn't help.

I tend to agree. But to be fair to Juan, he really doesn't have a position in Chelsea's traditional 9-0-1 formation for big games. I don't really see Hazard fitting in well to that either :mellow:

Scotland's WCQing preparation makes almost no sense and I agree that this game should not have been scheduled. Look at the difference between how the US is preparing for WCQing and how Scotland is. Scotland does not play a game until one more friendly against Australia a long ways from today before starting WCQing.

Klinsmann is creating a camp where the players get extended time together feeling like a real team.

Scheduling is solid for the US as the order and time difference of playing Scotland and Brasil is very close to approximating playing Antigua and Guat right down to playing the easier game first and the much harder game second.

Canada will be used for fine tuning.

In case people are trying to DVR the US Brazil game tomorrow, be forewarned the time of the start of the telecast appears to be offset by ten minutes

On ESPN2

From 7:30pm to 7:50pm will be the pre match show

From 7:50pm to 10:00pm will be the game.

I assume kickoff is shortly after 8:00pm but with this offset I can't be sure.

Here is an interesting factoid for Euro 2012 I just read on twitter.

England is the only team in the competition to have all 23 players play club football in their home country.

That's not really surprising. There are no English currently playing in Spain or Italy. Joe Cole is on loan in France and ex-Chelsea defender Michael Mancienne is in the Bundesliga.Ex-WBA keeper Scott Carson plays in Turkey and got a few England caps under Capello but hasn't been called up for over a year.

UEFA has their game up that's near-identical to the CL game that a lot of us participated in. $100 salary cap, build a team of 15 players, start 11, pick a captain, etc.ESPN has a game, but there's no cap and unlimited transfers. :X

These things go in cycles. These past 5-10 years or so, the big money is in England, so the good English players (the internationals) are going to stay home. Back when all the money was in Italy, they had the same situation - all the top internationals were playing for Italian clubs.

I thought Mata was the second best field player for the European Champions this season, behind Ramires. He is one of a few who fared somewhat better under AVB than he did after Di Mateo took over (Sturridge and Romeu being the other two). He had several huge games early in the season. I agree he was weak in the CL final, but he was out of position, playing the 10 with Kalou and Ryan Bertrand as wingers, so very little to work with there. He did have the assist on Drogba's goal, so I would give him some credit. Assuming Hazard signs with Chelsea as has been reported, there will be some interesting tactical decisions to be made in the Chelsea attack, especially if they also add Hulk.

While we are awaiting interested parties, can you list out the rules? Squad size, point distribution etc? I did not play the world cup one so I am unsure how it works.

NE vs Harrisburg in US Open Cup

Fagundez gets tossed for NE in first half, down to ten men

Game end tied 0-0, off to 30 minutes of extra time

NE scores three goals in first 15 minutes to go up 3-0

Harrisburg responds with three including a goal in the 120th minute by a kid named JT Noone (I kid you not) to draw level at 3-3
