UEFA could scrap Europa League

November 28, 2012

NYON, Switzerland -- UEFA president Michel Platini says the soccer body could consider scrapping the Europa League and expanding the more popular Champions League.

Platini tells French daily Ouest-France that UEFA is having an "ongoing debate" about possible changes to its competitions for the 2015-18 cycle of broadcasting contracts.

Platini says "we're discussing it. We will make a decision in 2014."

The Europa League earns one-sixth of the Champions League's $1.73 billion annual revenue, which is mostly shared by 32 clubs which reach the group stage.

The Europa League's longer and more complicated format has also proved unpopular with some clubs and fans.

However, scrapping it in favor of a 64-team Champions League would likely be opposed by European Club Association members whom UEFA is obliged to consult on competition changes.
I don't see why they wouldn't. Does anyone really want to play in the Europa league?
I thought they were trying to give the champions of non-major leagues a chance when they forced the lowest qualifiers from the major leagues to player each other to qualify for the group stage. This seems to go against that unless they reduce the number of spots the best leagues get in the CL+EL.

For those that have not seen yet============================SAO PAULO -- Luiz Felipe Scolari is expected to be named as the new Brazil coach, returning to the national team 10 years after leading the country to the 2002 World Cup title. The official announcement is expected to be made by Brazilian federation president Jose Maria Marin on Thursday. The president said Wednesday that a new coach has been selected, and sources close to Scolari and the Brazilian federation confirmed to local media that the outspoken Scolari was the one chosen to lead Brazil at the 2014 World Cup.
Big Phil seems like a reasonable choice. The Brazil job is as much managing egos and the media as it is tactics.
I can remember when the Brazilian media chastised Phil for winning ugly. I think Dunga got a raw deal. He was knocked out by the eventual finalist because Felipe Melo had an awful game (own goal and a red card). That, as they say, is football. The guy otherwise won, a lot, with perhaps the least talented generation of Brazillian players I can remember.
That's how it goes in national team management. You get dealt a set of players and a precious few meaningful games. You're the toast of the country if things work out but have to be satisfied with a high pay/work coefficient if things don't.

No one WANTS to play in Europa League instead of the CL. However, for some teams if gives them a nice revenue stream with extra games against European competition, as well as exposure for both recruiting and marketing.
I really don't care if the Europa League goes away, but I don't need an expanded Champions League. I don't really get the point. Nobody pays attention to the rounds to qualify for the group stage. So if that's the proposal, OK, I guess. But if they're thinking of more groups, I think that will really hurt the competition. Groups of death will be a thing of the past.

They are calling the current version a 32 team CL, which defines the group stage, so I think when they talk about a 64 team CL, they intend to double the size of the group stage which would suck. It would be a ton of non competitive games.

I think the bigger loss will be on the skinny end of the tournament. The Europa League from the quarterfinals on have some very intriguing matchups, without the sameness of the usual Champions League giants. The economics of the game make it prohibitively hard for all but a small number of teams to aspire to the Champions League. The Europa Leagues is more democratic and the list of recent winners bears that out.But then again, I still miss the Cup Winners Cup and the Intertoto Cup.

NUFC is only two points out of the drop zone
They've been as surprisingly awful this year as they were surprisingly good last year. They seemed to go in the tank right when Pardew got the long contract extension. It's kind of weird that a Cisse and Ba have no idea how to play together. You think they'd have figured it out for the national team.

It's hard to put any of that on Ba. He has played well with Ben Arfa and Cabaye this year while Cisse has yet to even show up. When was the last time someone has blown as hot and cold as Cisse in back-to-back years on the same team? It's pretty amazing. It's not like he is coming back from injury or fighting through anything.Edit: Well, Ba to Cisse for the goal apparently. Somehow I doubt this is the spark, but NUFC fans can hope.

Newcastle's been hit pretty hard by injuries/suspensions. They are not that deep a side - and missing guys for a number of games, Krul, Colocini, Tiote, Ben Arfa, Cisse, Taylor, Amoebi, Cabaye....think it's pretty harsh to blame it on the cohesion between cisse and ba which is pretty solid when their team is together.

No way this team drops this year.

But, yeah, giving Pardew that long term deal is gonna sting supporters quite a bit.

I'm torn on Europa League. I keep thinking it should be good for mid-size teams that I follow. But when I've seen Newcastle, and Villa, much less Man U and Man City, they just don't seem to value the competition much. Which is understandable considering the fixture congestion and short turnaround to the next league game. So I never know how to take a Zenit or a Porto or an Atletico Madrid win. I enjoyed Fulham's run a few years back. But I never get tired of the giants playing one another. I'd salivate over a permanent Champions League that broke off from the feeder leagues.

Even last year, though it just seemed like Ba would score or Cisse would score. Now, I get that Ba moves to a left sided player when Cisse plays. I do the same on my FB Manager team. But Cisse frustrates me. When he's on, he's a world class poacher. But when the goals don't come, I don't think he adds much.Ben Arfa is also a frustrating guy. Incredible when he's on. Otherworldly. But he can disappear from a game in an instant. I am a big Cabaye fan.

One month ago Chelsea were coming off a huge win @ Spurs and sitting on top of the table. Since then they are L-D-D-L-D-D in league play. Rafa must go.

Pardew has been a great manager for them. The amount of talent he has assembled for the price is second-to-none. They just can't handle the injuries to key players. I don't watch Newcastle a ton, but Tottenham have the same problem. They can handle a few injuries, but once they tread into 4+ or even just a couple of key midfidlers they drop off a ton. I don't think it has anything to do with Pardew's contract.

This is meI'm pretty sure if they dissolve it, you're going to hear the same #####ing and moaning from smaller countries, that are going to get omitted, while the EPL, La Liga, Serie A get 6 clubs in CL play now, and teams from Denmark, Belgium, Ukraine, etc... get bumped with maybe one team. That's the reason Europa league exists now, and they'll need to figure out a way to get around this again, maybe a round robin tourney to get into CL play? I don't know exactly.

But, there is no doubt that bigger clubs that miss out in CL competition offer nothing 9x out of 10 in Europa league. Just look at the teams Liverpool is sending out there - in particular on the road. I'm certainly not going to blame them, especially with a new manager struggling in league play, so basically you get c teams out there from many sides disinterested in playing (not to mention, wth wants to play road matches in Scandanavia or Russia in the middle of December).

But, the flip side is strong managers on middling clubs like Stoke always send out their best available team. They want to advance, the deeper they get, the more revenue which is key for mid tier teams in big leagues and some bigger teams in other leagues.

It's a tough call.

I was watching the Spurs/Lazio match last week with my father who is a non-soccer fan, but he knows I'm really into it, so he put up with it :) Anyway, the stands (lower level in particular) where nearly empty and he asked me why the hell am I watching the game if the fans aren't even interested in showing up. I think he had a point. And this was the match right after the Spurs fans were brutally attacked in Rome.

But, I did watch it, because I like both sides, and they put out decent teams - although the game was a snooze fest.

If they ditch Europa league, I will not mind. If they continue to play it, I'll continue to watch.

but, I do think I'm a bit more avid than most all soccer fans.

Don't stop until Roman uses two managers in the same game.P.S. Still available. P.P.S. I'll also fill-in for Suarez at CF for Liverpool if someone can grease the wheels for my work permit. I'll be the one who stretches out the jersey so that it looks like a Standard Chartered billboard.

As much as I too like the giant vs. giant CL games, a Super League would drain a lot of money/rivalry/tradition out of the domestic leagues. And I don't think a lot of foreign fans (e.g. us) who are getting into the sport would even bother with the domestic leagues. They'd just pick a CL team, and ignore England, or Spain, or Germany. And as a follower of a team that's in the CL a lot, I like having both league play and a months-long knockout tournament.

I'm OK with expanding the pre-group stages of the CL, but I'd hate to see them expand the group stage from 32, or the knockout round from 16.

I'm not denying Pardew has not been very good. And yes, they have done a good job assembling a team at a bargain price. However, he was just given an 8 year contract extension I believe - which would have him there for 10 years total, right? How many managers in the EPL have served 10 years with the same team? SAF, Wenger, Moyes maybe? Think that's it off the top of my head. Newcastle, even though they are just a few years removed from the championship, are still a pretty big money club. They have a decent history and their supporters will want to reach those levels again. I doubt they would be happy with a decade of 8th - 15th place finishes (something a team like Everton which is not a big money club, does not have the luxury of aspiring for constant top 5 finishes). And while Wenger hasn't really filled the silverware chest, he has kept Arsenal near the top of the league for a decade now plus. Tough to stick around for a long time these days as a manager in the epl.I think Newcastle's thinking is they will get the kind of players Pardew wants in place and see how it goes - so I think the January transfer window, as well as the offseason will be interesting for Newcastle.

I mentioned this briefly yesterday but here is the full press release. I think this bodes very well for the EPL next year as most feel NBC did a great job with MLS and their coverage of soccer should only get better now with the EPL starting next year.

Inaugural Season of NBC Sports Group's MLS Partnership Experiences Tremendous Growth

NEW YORK – November 28, 2012 – NBC Sports Group, in its first season in partnership with Major League Soccer, experienced tremendous growth among viewers and across key male demos. For the 2012 MLS season, NBC Sports Group presented 41 regular season games - three on NBC and 38 on NBC Sports Network. Viewership was up 122% compared to the 2011 regular season of Fox Soccer Channel (151,000 vs. 68,000). Viewership was also up among male demos with Men 18-34 up 63% and Men 18-49 up 50%.

The 2012 MLS season on NBC Sports Network (38 games) was up 79% when compared to the similar schedule in 2011 (122,000 vs. 68,000). Additionally, NBC Sports Network saw a rise in the key male demographics. Viewership was up 47% among Men 18-34 and 29% among Men 18-49.

The MLS Playoffs also enjoyed significant increases for NBC and NBC Sports Network, with average viewership up 77% from the comparable 2011 Playoff average (177,000 vs. 100,000).

In all, NBC Sports Group’s MLS coverage reached more than 13.2 million total viewers during the 2012 season, nearly five times Fox Soccer’s total audience for the 2011 season (2.7 million).

The inaugural season of MLS on NBC received critial acclaim for its production and talent. NBC teamed veteran play-by-play voice Arlo White, who Sports Illustrated called “a gem,” with former MLS and U.S. National Team player Kyle Martino. Martino was positioned “between the benches” and not in the booth with White, which provided fans with unique field level insight in addition to game analysis.

The Tampa Bay Times said, “NBC Sports Network’s coverage looked great and sounded even better with Kyle Martino between the benches.”

Soccer America said NBC Sports Network’s soccer telecasts, “brought a crisp, professional sheen to the telecast, utilizing replays smartly and not cluttering up the telecast with bizarre camera placements or in-game fluff interviews.”

More soccer on TV notes.

TRAFFIC REGAINS CONCACAF RIGHTS

Traffic has snagged commercial partnership rights to the 2013 Gold Cup and the 2013-14 and 2014-15 Concacaf Champions League away from SUM.

The Concacaf executive committee approved the deal after due process from the Concacaf Evaluation Committee that included U.S. Soccer general secretary Dan Flynn.

Traffic had held the Concacaf rights for the Gold Cup and Concacaf Champions Cup until 2003.

SUM has held the Concacaf rights since then as it gained increasingly control of the American soccer market. It is also the MLS and U.S. Soccer marketing arm and organizes many international friendly matches.

Some don't want Champions League expansion because there's only 8-10 teams worth watching, but a big part of the reason there's only 8-10 teams worth watching is because of the current Champions League format.

Personally, I'm all for a 64-team group stage. Give more teams the money, exposure and access to better players that comes with a CL group spot, and it'll be good for the sport across the continent.

You want a better Champions League? You need to fix the broken TV rights systems in the domestic leagues so that there is more competition at the upper levels. EPL does a good job with this, but it's the only one.

NUFC's reputation as a big budget club dates back to the days of John Hall's ownership. St. James Park is still big so their attendance numbers look good, but they're still dealing with debt from the previous owners and revenues are well below the top clubs. The North East isn't the strongest region economically, which hurts their prospects. Mike Ashley isn't the most popular owner around but he has put some of his money into the club. Pardew probably won't have a lot of money to play with in January unless he sells.

And a yellow for a dive.
Led the league last year in yellows for simulation. Biggest diver in the league, but Suarez is evil.
I don't think Suarez is evil. And I certainly believe Bale is a diver. I'm sure Bale's reputation will probably start costing him deserved penalties soon, if it hasn't already. Also, Suarez does look more like Anne Hathaway.

I think Donovan and Twellman is right. I want to say Jason Kreis. I'm not sure 100% sure that Lassiter was born in the US, and it strikes me as likely that he would have split the vote with Ethceverry or whoever was the CM in DC that year (it all runs together). I know that Shalrie Joseph could have played for the US. Was he born here?

You guys did well on the guessesThe 5 are Donovan, Twellman, Wondo, Meola, and KriesPreki also had two MVP's but was not born in the US.
Kreis is the guy I thought of, but figured Moreno or Etcheverry had to have won it that year. Meola I just whiffed on, though I'm not sure I'd have picked him anyway.
