Official US Open Cup Format
Lots of changes this year. If you don't have time to read article (which is pretty in depth), here are some highlights
*Prize pools almost doubled, including the winner getting $250K instead of $100K
*Addition of more low level amateur club teams
*Dropping of sealed bids for hosting at all levels (this is the big change, now it is pure random who hosts)
*MLS enters in 3rd round on May 28th
*Total of 68 teams broken up into the following
16 from MLS (the 3 Canadian teams are not included since it is a domestic cup competition)
6 from NASL teams (2nd division)
12 from USL Pro (3rd division)
16 from USL Premier Development League
8 from National Premier Soccer League
8 from U.S. Adult Soccer Association+
1 from US Club Soccer+
1 from U.S. Specialty Sports Association+
+will all involve numerous teams playing regional tournaments to get one of the bids to the Open Cup
*Final on Oct 1st or 2nd
