It wasn't a challenge. He was trying to bring the ball down and Arbeloa just runs into him. By the time he realized he was upon him there was no time to pull out. Just horrible that the CL gets decided on a call like that. Horrible. Jesus..Pure class from the Special One btw. Hope he ends up at United.Now I know you don't.

That's an absolutely awful call. It was a high boot, but he was clearly playing the ball and had no idea the guy was there. Disgraceful.
Hell of a game by Lopez though. United had 3 or 4 good headers that were in if they were 1 foot in the other direction.
That's really the bad part of soccer. One call like that can just change everything and there's nothing anyone can do about it.

Can't remember the last time that was written or deserved to be written about him. Still, he did comport himself with class today. Tough loss for United seeing as how they got the tactics completely right today and executed them very well up until the card.

Nice win by Houston tonight with Brad Davis scoring in the 89th minute to give Houston a 1-0 win over Santos in the first leg of the quarterfinals. Tough return leg in Mexico next week where Santos has won 20 out 21 home games in the Champions League.
Next quarterfinal is a tough leg in Tigres for Seattle, who lead Liga MX, tomorrow night.

I was on my phone and my fat fingers result in brief replies.Since I dislike both RM and MU a positive from the match was knowing I would see one of the coaches unhappy afterwards.I was not disappointed.

Official US Open Cup Format
Lots of changes this year. If you don't have time to read article (which is pretty in depth), here are some highlights
*Prize pools almost doubled, including the winner getting $250K instead of $100K
*Addition of more low level amateur club teams
*Dropping of sealed bids for hosting at all levels (this is the big change, now it is pure random who hosts)
*MLS enters in 3rd round on May 28th
*Total of 68 teams broken up into the following
16 from MLS (the 3 Canadian teams are not included since it is a domestic cup competition)
6 from NASL teams (2nd division)
12 from USL Pro (3rd division)
16 from USL Premier Development League
8 from National Premier Soccer League
8 from U.S. Adult Soccer Association+
1 from US Club Soccer+
1 from U.S. Specialty Sports Association+
+will all involve numerous teams playing regional tournaments to get one of the bids to the Open Cup
*Final on Oct 1st or 2nd

I guess the argument is that Ferguson should have gone into a shell, but they actually created several chances so I think that's armchair quarterbacking the situation a bit.Modric is probably the best player in the world to bring on to dominate play in that situation and it so happened that RM had him sitting on the bench. How many teams can bring on Kaka and Modric off the bench? Jose gets credit for actually making the moves, but Ferguson really had no good options to counter that.

Bringing on Modric was a killer sub, but I would still expect ManU to do better holding their defensive form with a 1-0 lead at home. Chelsea was of course ridiculed for their playing style in the CL last season, but showed at the Camp Nou that it is possible to maintain defensive form with 10 men over 45 minutes. ManU lost their heads after the red card and conceded two within 15 minutes.

If that's, true why didn't Rooney start? He's a much more complete player than Welbeck. I don't see why Welbeck started if Ferguson felt Rooney was more likely to score. That would pretty much be the only reason to start Welbeck.I think you are right that Rooney should have been brought on immediately, but it's hard to argue without understanding Ferguson's reasons for sitting him to begin with.

I believe he expected RM to score even with a full squad and down a man meant that there was little chance of winning in overtime. They created some good opportunities, but couldn't convert.If I recall Barca had quite a few great opportunities after Terry was red-carded. Regardless of how well Chelsea may have defended, in the end, they got lucky Barca didn't convert some of them. Luck is important though. Nani's red card was obviously lucky for RM and likely won them the game.

I'm probably prejudiced from seeing the match after reading a lot of the coverage, but I understand the decision to keep Welbeck in.
Welbeck had a very specific tactical role in denying Xabi Alonso the ball, and he did it spectacularly (I've read a Jurgen Klopp interview where he said that this was his tactical plan to stop RM as well). I don't know if Sir Alex had it in his mind or not, but that's the role that Rooney was supposed to play in the Euro matchup against Italy. He was supposed to deny Pirlo the ball. He didn't do it. Joe Hart was literally screaming at him to do it and he didn't do it.
We see Rooney fighting for the ball on defense and we say that he's a complete player. There's no doubt that he gives 100% effort. But I'm not sure he's always a complete player tactically. Particularly if his role neither requires him to look for the best attacking position OR to chase the ball. Wayne has also improved his composure immeasurably, but Sir Alex might have worried that having a guy prone to the old red mist press a savvy guy like Alonso might be asking for trouble.
After the card, it's true that Welbeck probably couldn't be used the same way. But he's still the fastest option in the forward line and thus probably the most likely to keep the RM line a little lower to relieve congestion. So again, I'm not sure a substitution then is the obvious answer.

The fact that the Galaxy was also established for a number of years before Chivas USA came to town doesn't help. Many fans who might have rooted for the second team already had a favorite local MLS team. I think MLS might have overestimated how many fans of the Mexican club would become supporters of the MLS club just because of the name, especially since the Galaxy had been a strong club for a number of the 8 seasons they were the only club in town.

All of this is true. We also need to remember that when Chivas joined MLS, it was nothing like the league it has grown into today. Back then there were only 4 owners in the entire league (Kraft, St Phil and Hunt, with Kronkee just coming on board months before The Chivas idea was being considered). The league was desperate for capital and ownership diversity and was almost forced to take a chance. If the identical situation proposed itself today, it would be met with a much higher level of scrutiny.It is also a bit ironic going back to the original point of this discussion, the Galaxy have benefitted financially from Chivas as they did mot really lose any fans and Chivas not only paid AEG a large sum of money to be a second team in the area, they also pay money to rent out HDC every season.

Seattle is getting played off the park at half time. Some how it is still 0-0 via some bad finishing and Ozzie Alonso playing his balls off defending from his midfield spot.
I wish Fifa would make a ruling on Alonso, I feel he would be an upgrade over Williams.

Seattle loses 1-0 but they will take it. They get the second leg at home now next week.
At this same stage last year, Seattle beat Santos at home and then got shredded 6-1 in Mexico so the 1-0 scoreline tonight is not quite so bad.
LA is the last MLS team to play the first leg in the quarter finals and they are on tomorrow night.
