Pretty big blow to SPL today as Celtic lost 2-0 to Shaktar Karagandy in CL qualifying play. I've never even heard of this team before today.

Celtic made it to the knockout phase last year which was pretty good. Getting knocked out before group stage would be a huge disappointment.

Kazakh side Shakhter Karagandy have called on an unusual means to gain the edge over Celtic in their crucial Champions League play off clash Tuesday by slaughtering a sheep at the stadium for good luck.

Shakhter Karagandy, one of the most easterly sides in European football, are hosting Celtic in the Kazakh capital of Astana and will need everything on their side to overcome the Scottish giants.

Coach Viktor Kumykov said that the Kazakh champions had slaughtered a sheep a day ahead of the clash but said there was no reason for the ritual sacrifice to be the cause of any fuss.

"We are just observing a tradition. The guys decided that being in the play-off is a new level and we are not going to violate this tradition," he said in comments on the Karagandy website.

The vesti.kz website said a cleric from the local mosque was invited to oversee the sacrifice and published a picture of the unfortunate black sheep being led out onto the pitch on a cart.

In many Muslim majority countries like Kazakhstan, the ritual slaughter of a sheep is seen as bringing good fortune ahead of a major event. The meat from the slaughtered sheep is then often distributed among the poor.

i have a ton that I play with my 3-5 yer olds. PM me when you get a chance. I don't have time to get into it right now.

Bale's recent contract offer was 170K/week I believe. Well above Tottenham's pay structure, but their justification was the marketing value of Bale. That's probably about even with what those three would make (I think BAE is on around 50K and they would obviously sell him as well if they bought Coentrao).They lose the marketing value of Bale though so I would still call it a net loss.

Somebody did a net wage and transfer analysis for Tottenham over the last two years and even with their big spending so far they are still up 22M on transfer fees and down 70K in salary. That's the upside of being prudent I suppose, the downside being losing out on CL by one point two seasons in a row.

That doesn't include the new TV revenue obviously so Willian isn't a guarantee that Bale is gone. They have plenty of money to accommodate both of them. Technically, they could probably afford Lamela as well, but I really doubt Lamela comes and Bale stays.

So World Cup 2014 Ticket applications can officially be submitted today. The window for submitting an application will remain open until October 10. Its NOT first-come first-serve at this stage so as long as you apply within the window you have equal chance to be selected. The drawings will take place between October 10 and November 5 and tickets will be allocated accordingly. A second window will then open in Nov-Dec which WILL be on a first come-first serve basis for the remaining tickets. Complete rules can be seen below.

There are three ways to apply for tickets:

1. Individual ticket sales: You apply for specific game-slots for a given group (even though the groups wont be officially announced until Dec)

2. Purchase tickets for a given Country: Between 3-7 games - either the entire group stage, or group stage + knockput stages.

3. Purchase tickets by location/venue

Anyone thinking about going? Any good WC ticket strategies?

Ive never done this before, but I would guess there are a few ways to tackle this. For example, if your goal is to get to the WC at any cost and you dont care which games you see, it might not be a bad idea to apply for the tickets of a very small country who has a high chance of qualifying (i.e Monetenegro has a population of only 600,000 but is first in its group as of today). On the other hand, if you want to see a specific team (i.e. US) the best strategy may be to invest a wad of cash on all seven games, knowing that the US will likely not advance too far (Egad! Blasphemy!) and that most of that fan base are therefore vying for smaller packages. Youd then be stuck with extra tickets youd need to discard (or goto the games rooting for another team). Again, I dont know, never having done this before. Of course, FIFA will process your credit card on the day you submit your application.

Please share your thoughts, stories and strategies. Would be cool if several of us would meet up on the beaches of Rio before a US-Argentina group match :cool:

Nando not even on the bench today for Chelsea as Dembabino gets the surprise start. Lukaku in reserve - likely to get his turn on Monday at Old Trafford.

 
Looks like Willian to Spurs is almost done. Apparently Levy got a copy of Football Manager and has found out how much fun it is to buy players.

I've no idea myself, but have seen a few articles crediting newly-hired Franco Baldini for Spurs seemingly impressive haul this summer.

From which one could infer that Bale to Madrid is inevitable, no?

It might take awhile for Spurs' new attackers to gel, but credit to them for acting decisively in offsetting Bale's loss. I don't think they're going to lose much ground.

From what I've read, Lamela is the proverbial canary in the coal mine for Bale. If he shows up, Bale is gone. Until then, it's anyone's guess.

It's not inevitable. They would actually be close to break even with transfer money and salary over the last two years if they brought in just Willian at this point. Bale's new contract would bounce them over about 100K/week if he stays though. Still well affordable considering the increase in TV rights money.

I think the silence on the Bale front lately indicates a deal has already been reached with RM though and it's just contingent on Tottenham getting their targets first.

Even with all of the new players there will likely be a substantial amount left over for the stadium.

His finishing is actually pretty good. It's his first touch and dribbling that usually lets him down. It's a strange thing to finish well but dribble poorly, but somehow he manges that. :shrug:
