Ashley Young more than likely playing for his job this preseason. Looked good this tournament.

Uneven performances from both the new guys, but to be expected.

If Smalling can continue to play as he has of late, we can add Humels, shift Jones out of such a predominant spot in defense, get Carrick back and maybe add one more box to box midfielder or another cb, United should be good to go.

Of course, they may just decide that this team is deep enough and good enough to make a go of it as is

Liked what I've seen for the most part, but United still needs some work.

I think Liverpool could mostly make up for Suarez's actual goals if they had service, but they're missing someone to replace Suarez as creator on the ball and creator of space off it.

I'm not sure Coutinho is ready to be a true #10 and Sterling is crafty, but not really the lynchpin of the offense type IMO. It's early, and I hope I'm wrong, but they don't really seem dangerous as a team -- it feels like there's no glue in attack. [/reverse jinx]

ETA: Chelsea and City fight for the title, United and Arsenal fight for 3rd, Liverpool and etc fight for 5th.

I like Lambert late on off the bench. Not as a starter. They either need a good starting ST, or they give Ibe a shot.

I like JPd, but he has to be paired with someone livelier than McBride.
gtfo.

granted, it's taken him oh... 20+ years to rise to a level just above Gus... but he's still terrible.

Gus Johnson- shudder the thought of this- let's see where he is in 20 years after he's learned a little bit about the game.

Maybe JP should fake a British accent.

My #1 team for Fox would be Stoner and Barton, but I think J.P. / McBride are perfectly serviceable. But it doesn't matter who they choose, people are going to complain.

Don't get me wrong- I'll take LHusks and Andre the Giant over Gus and anybody.

Truth of the matter for me- I don't really listen to the announcers, other than for names of players.

eta: which is why Gus is horrible. I put my TV on mute, and he still yells through it when there's a throw in.

I didn't even watch- just have a lifelong dislike of JP. But he has improved a lot.

Best type of announcers IMO.

I agree with Christo here (oof, now I need to go bathe). In fact, I commented to my wife that I thought the announcers did a decent job last night and have improved from what we've had in the past with American announcers.

JP has been calling soccer for 30 years. He's not Vin Scully, but he knows the game and he knows enough to let his color guy come through as much or as little as he wants to. His radio gigs with Tommy Smyth have a bit more of the Odd Couple feel to them. McBride is super low key, but I don't mind that. He's definitely best talking about forwards (what run was there, why the forward might have hesitated, how the forward's feet might have been wrong).

I thought both JP and McBride did a decent job talking about Blackett in the second half. This is a young kid who came into a game where Man U's backline had a horror show playing the ball out of the back in the first half. Blackett was composed and safe on the ball facing the same type of high pressure that nearly broke the Man U system in the first half (at times, he might have played it a bit too safe by going back DeGea immediately, but he did that less as he got more comfortable, which shows a degree of maturity in itself). It was good performance for a young player, and I think it was astute for the guys to notice it.

I always liked McBride as an analyst and don't mind him as a color guy- very monotone, but offers decent pro-awareness of what's going on.

I honestly can't let go of my dislike of JP from the dark-ages when he was literatlly the only guy calling games (typically without a color guy) and just didn't have the knowledge of the sport to make me happy. But again, he seems to have learned a lot over the years and has improved.

I would take JP from 30 years ago over Gus.

If people hate McBride's dryness, I'm sure they're downright giddy with Howard's. I do think both guys bring up some insightful tactical awareness to the broadcasts that has been lacking even with some ESPN announcing teams.

@TonyBarretTimes: Liverpool have accepted an offer from Bayern Munich for Pepe Reina.

eta, looks to be for £2M

Portland-Colorado about to start on NBCSN. Ridgewell is playing.
Plays MLS debut on July 18, makes MLS All-Star team on August 5.
Makes sense when it is such a late injury replacement to just grab some one from Portland where the game will be played. This is what Porter had to say about it

"Under the circumstances in losing a player at this late point in time, I felt it was best to pull in a player that wouldn't disrupt the other clubs and their preparation this week,” Porter said in a statement. “Liam will be a quality addition."
