These 2-week international breaks stink.
Agree and it appears most agree with no conversation about the matches here.

It obviously came at a good time for United. With all the injuries and transfers and horrible start to the season.
Wembley was half-full yesterday, so it seems like most of England agrees.

I assume it's a post-World Cup hangover. Seems kind of hard to really get jacked up for International football when we are 2 years away from another big competition.

Personally I don't know what's happened to me. I was reading an article on Rodgers and Balotelli this morning, and I am actually annoyed and mad that there are no EPL games this weekend. Then I realized it is NFL opening weekend. While I'm still a huge NFL fan...my 25 year old self would never believe that in the future I'd be depressed about no Premier League on KICKOFF WEEKEND!!!
I'll miss the games on Sept. 13 and 20 because of travel, which is being made worse by the absence of games this weekend.

I read on twitter that Valdes has agreed to terms with Liverpool, but the deal won't be finalized until he passes a physical in a month?

Quick overview on him: Beast goalie coming off injury, aging...Do we think he can unseat Mignolet or is he a backup? He seems like he's very experienced in the Champions League.
If healthy, he's the perfect keeper to challenge Mignolet. Good with his feet, quick off his line(was?) and like you said, comes with CL experience. :fingerscrossed:

I've gone from "rabid fan" to really not caring about the NFL, at all.
Fantasy football will probably keep that from happening to me. Also, the time difference keeps the two from overlapping too much. Although I'm enjoying the fantasy EPL league I'm in...it seems like fantasy is not going to be the major selling point for me, when it comes to club soccer. There just aren't as many stats you can keep track of in soccer.

He certainly can if he returns to the form he has pre-injury.

Going to guess his Liverpool wages are a lot less than what he was hoping for from Monaco.

Never asked to do very much for Barca, and he never did. Don't recall him ever making even a few key stops on tough shots for Barca.

OTOH, no idea what the stats say about the guy. Maybe my impression that he consistently came up small the few times his team really needed him to make a great stop or two is completely out to lunch.

The soccer fantasy games are way behind the soccer analytics right now. There are a bunch of stats that could be included in fantasy beyond what they use now.

For example here is Raheem's Steerlings stats from his last game. Certainly there is much more than goals and assists if fantasy wanted to encorporate them.

This isn't really true of the last two years or so. His form last year was on par with any GK. I think he took big steps forward from the frustrating mistakes that marked most of his career.

Decision making has always been his weakness and maturity has improved that a bit. He is great at quick, twitch reactions and passing.

Very interesting. While I'm enjoying my league, getting points for starting the game and just playing seems a bit weird. I'd love for fantasy soccer to advance. I noticed that in general fantasy soccer stinks in terms of the information available to the average fan. A guy that loves soccer, has a lot of time on his hands, and knows anything about SEO could make a fantasy soccer website that could get a lot of hits pretty quick.

Mignolet looked a little shakey to me last game- which is the first time I've questioned him being anything other than a top GK. really weak distribution with his feet which got his team into trouble, and seemed to mistime a couple of balls across.

That's exactly how it went. I was commissioner of three league for 13 years. I finally got tired of all of the work that was involved, so I hung it up. Once I quit fantasy, I just didn't care all that much anymore. I'll still watch the Bears if I'm awake, but there were definitely times last season where a good Sunday nap was far more important to me. I don't miss it at all. (And, consequently, why I don't ever join in on the BPL fantasy league).

I still play FF... and I still don't care about the NFL the way I used to.

Distribution is his weakness but they're trying new things this year with him. The last goal in the City game was partly his fault because of his bad positioning to start(too high). That wouldn't have happened last season because he was glued to his line. He's playing higher up this year compared to last. There will be growing pains, but he's a shot stopper first and foremost and he's money at that.

I think the NFL and soccer can co-exist for me. The most challenging part of soccer for me is going to be watching the CL. The games will happen at work, and I won't be able to watch them. So I'll DVR them, avoid this thread and avoid texts from my other friends with an interest in soccer. Stinks.

A lot of fantasy league do incorporate additional stats - like tackles, or interceptions, and it would be worthwhile to include things like completed passes, or shots on goals, etc. The challenge is getting the critical mass to make that happen - its still a relatively new phenomenon here, both watching games, and fantasy games, that you have a lot of leagues with owners who are just happy to track goals/assists, because that is all they know/can handle - any additional stats would be sensory overload.

I am somewhat torn with the concept though - I do think fantasy football has accelerated my growing tired of football. I grew up rooting for one team, and pretty much against all other teams. With fantasy, it became more about the individual players and less about the team, and as a consequence, I barely notice my childhood team, and have no rooting interest beyond players. I am now playing in just 1 family league, and if not for a draft last night, would barely realize the season was starting. I just no longer have the emotional connection with the sport to make me "care", and won't spend my Sundays this year in front of the TV monitoring all the games...

With soccer, I have a team. I like that passion - and while I enjoy watching good teams play, I like having the emotional attachment which comes from rooting for a single team rather than a group of individuals. I really don't want to root for Diego Costa to play well, just because he is on my fantasy team (or not, as the case may be). So, while I think fantasy sports provides a short-term boost to interest in particular sports, in the long-run, I think it hurts.

adding tackles, shots and passes would all be nice additions to the small amount they have now. I could argue that all 3 of those are more important to a players overall affect on a game than a yellow card.

Fouls committed or fouls drawn are also more interesting to me than tracking some of the banal items they track now like whether a player plays 60 minutes.

I'll just point out that recording and watching matches later has become a PITA - Premier > hi! ;) You could record CL matches in the past and have no worries about it being spoiled be friends or media outlets. Now you have to go in to lockdown to make sure it's not ruined.

And what's even worse than that is the in-game score updates from around the league. They started doing that a couple years back and it SUCKS. Granted it makes my wife happy as it's reduced the amount I watch.

I'm in the midst of a sports purity project, whereby I've closed all gambling accounts and don't participate in any fantasy, pick-em or similar competitions - zilch - for the first time in probably 20 years. It is pretty refreshing.

Recording and watching later, something I've been doing for many years, is for me a somewhat odd experience. There is something missing from the experience when you know the game was played and ended hours earlier. For NFL, there's a huge benefit in being able to fast forward through the breaks and various delays in the game. For soccer, I often find it hard to watch the full 90 at normal speed, especially if its late at night or I have other external demands on my time. Its just not as relaxing for me as sitting down knowing I'm going to watch a live game for the next 90 minutes. If I'm going to watch games a day or two after they're played, I often prefer highlight shows, or watching a condensed format like beIn's 90 in 30, even knowing that I'm missing out on the finer tactical points of the game. For Champions League group stage, I watch Chelsea games in full (live or delayed) and highlight shows for all other games. In the knockouts, I'll record and watch more games delayed, but still rely mostly on the highlight show.

For the NFL, there is no substitute for RedZone. With all the breaks in action it is the perfect amount of activity. Try to always watch Barcelona live unless there are competing items like work or Gamecocks. For Sunday games, I typically would record and watch around 5PM.

I agree. I can't watch a replay. The energy is lost. If I miss a live game I will just watch the highlights.

I find it amazing that soccer has come so far so fast. Five years ago almost every game I would have wanted to watch live would have been unavailable. I pretty much just watched replays and that obviously led to significantly less enthusiasm for watching the sport.

I've watched more of Derby County last season than my combined NFL viewing over the past 5 years. NFL games just have no flow to them, it's a bore to watch.

Much to my wife's chagrin I still watch a lot of college football and some NFL.

Saturdays in the fall are ridiculous. I have to force myself to go outside or get to them gym - not quite as hard now with the kids all playing sports but I could easily sit on my ### from 7:30 for the first EPL kickoff to midnight and have something to watch.

it's unbelievable.

5 years ago, it was pretty much the same, but smaller handful of geezers in here lamenting not being able to watch non-EPL involved CL games... now, just look at us.

When I worked from home, I would have Fox Soccer on all day... back in the days when they'd show constant games- either replay or live.

I've said this many times- but my wife would ask me "how much soccer can you watch?"... "all of it".

Since the kids- I've had to completely rejigger that answer... "as much of it as I can". she's noted that if it's a mid-day game, I'll usually fall asleep at some point. :geezer:

The greatest day of the year? No, not BJ and steak day. It's Boxing Day. No work, kids are busy with their new toys and wall-to-wall EPL. I remember a couple years where I watched most of all 10 matches.

Speaking of how far we've come, I agree with everything that has been said. However, on Monday I was reminded how, for the second year in a row, I did miss the soccer channel. NBC Sports has been fantastic with the availability of all the games, but they really need to embrace the fact that they are now the go to. I was surprised once again that there was just nothing on Transfer Deadline Day. I got up and immediately turned it on, only to find it was Nascar all day. Poor form. I had to sit back at the computer watching a stream of Sky Sports to get my fix.

I am pretty sure NBCSN ran a deadline day show. Many people on this thread were commenting on it.

They started it at 3pst after the deadline iirc. They were not on all day

Saturdays in the fall are ridiculous. I have to force myself to go outside or get to them gym - not quite as hard now with the kids all playing sports but I could easily sit on my ### from 7:30 for the first EPL kickoff to midnight and have something to watch.

:geezer:
It was a wrap-up show that started when the window officially closed. It was a well organized run through of all clubs' summer activities with interruptions for late breaking news. It didn't have any bystanders sticking purple dildos in Wimbledon legend Robbie Earle's ears.

I've considered myself a transfer geek the past few years, but even I was not about to sit on the couch on Labor Day to watch deadline day coverage on television. That's almost as bad as watching the NFL draft imo. Of course, I did have the ipad open while tending the grill all afternoon.

Lol. Yeah, I eventually went out and worked in the yard all day. I was just surprised when I went to NBCSN, and it was like six hours of NASCAR World.

I've watched more of Derby County last season than my combined NFL viewing over the past 5 years. NFL games just have no flow to them, it's a bore to watch.
Fortunately, Derby County is fun to say, especially when talking to non-footy friends. I like to throw in a Watford-bomb now and then with them, too.

I watched this one because it was the first meaningful one for me but I probably won't make a habit of it in the future.

Rebecca did the wrap up show with the Robbie's. It ended up being on for a couple hours - it wasn't horrible.
She had some pretty sweet-ass braids too.
I imagined that I was looking at them from behind. Real closely behind.

so you wouldn't have to see her horse face, right?

Where was I when UEFA changed the format for Euro 2016?

A year of qualifying games to narrow the field from 53 to 24, followed by a 24 team tournament with 16 teams qualifying for the knockouts. I guess it'll make everybody more money but it takes away a bit from the "anybody can win it" aspect that's made the tournament unique.

Would somebody please wake me up when Scotland is mathematically eliminated?

They only have to finish above three of Germany, Eire, Poland, Georgia and Gibraltar to advance to the playoffs and have been playing pretty well since Gordon Strachan took over.
