Thanks, Pablo
For what? Walking around and having a red card shoved in his face for nothing?
Just got back from the game... Pablo was jawing at the ref all night, and clearly got in his face for some more jibbah-jabbah after that "foul". His earlier yellow was deserved, if at least for repeated fouls... and then the idiocy of continuing to get in the ref's face after drawing the yellow.
That's crap. You don't get tossed for saying something to the ref. Even if you already have a yellow.
I don't know what to tell you- Pablo was going at the ref all game and obviously said something stupid. It's crap to get tossed like that, yes- but IMO understandable given the sheer amount of jawing. That said, the ref seemed to have a hard-on for Pablo from the get-go, seeming to call any and everything against him from the opening whistle... or at least that's what it looked like from the stands.

Pearce is impressive so far this half. Not so bad after all. Also, I've been impressed with Sacha Kljestan so far. He's only been in for like 10 minutes but he looks good.
I'l give him an "Ehhh" so far. Not enough touches to say either way.Adu does bring something. He's earned a strong look at being a starter IMO. Edu has played not as well I've seen him before.
he was god-awful vs England, but Pearce had an excellent game tonight- looked to get forward, and held form in the back. Also distributed the ball a hell of lot better than I've been seeing from him in the past. Plus, he's capable and willing to rip some shots off when he gets up- with a hammer of a left foot.
I was giving Sasha the "ehh", not Pearce.
Ah... gotcha, sorry. We left before Sasha got a chance to do much of anything (around the 80 min mark), but he's way too up and down for me as a player.but at this point, I guess US needs to take whoever they can get.

Forgot about Cherundolo, my favorite US player. Pretty meh this stretch of games. Still has the ability, but maybe not against world-class talent.

Wonderfully fun game tonight. I usually find most 0-0 friendlies akin to hot needles in the eye but this one was full of passion, hard tackles and a wonderful crowd that really seem to wake up to the fact that the US played well.Freddy has looked good for three straight games against the best players in the world. Now I know its just a friendly, but it seems to me he is earning his spot on this team and if he continues to play like this, he is going to start asking questions of why he is not starting.I hate to say this, but I think I would rather see Ching in there than EJ at this point. This doesn't seem to be a confidence thing. I don't think he has the make up to be a special player. I am afraid that Bradley is going to continue to play him in the early rounds and he may score against the weak competition giving Bradley more reasons to play him as qualifying continues.I fly the Donovan flag more than most in here. He is not always, for lack of a better term, "in the mood", but when he is the team seems to feed off of him. You can always tell when he wants to play because he has that extra gear that he uses in midfield to break away.
I agree with everything you wrote here, Andy. Not sure about Ching... but EJ- seeing him live showed me the problem: on top of having hit or miss skills, he has zero soccer instincts off the ball.

Not sure if I mentioned... but a GREAT US crowd tongiht, even though we were outmanned. We got to the stadium really early and people were there en masse tail-gating and kicking soccer balls around... it was amazing to see.

Oh... and if not for Howard, that could've been a blood bath.

What was the USA chant that you guys were doing in the second?

Not the standard USA-USA-USA Hacksaw Jim Duggan chant.

no doubt it could have been 4-0 at the half if not for howard. just, wow.

i thought the 2nd half was a lot more even.

pretty intense for a friendly. 2 reds, lot of hard tackling. freddy seemed to have a target on his back in the final minutes.

Croatia did what they always do when they lead, they get very defensive instead of going for the second goal. Very risky strategy that quiet often has fired back. I wonder if they will ever learn. They better start trying befor thursday against Germany.

Germany had a good game. Klose played very teamorientated  Gomez was a little unlucky but activ and Podolski showed what he can do when he gets a chance to play. Schweinsteiger strugled a bit once he entered the game but recovered.

Looking forward to todays game between Italy and Holland

Croatia looked pretty average, not what I expected at all. Germany showed they are definitely the favorites, IMO. Solid win over Poland.

I am starting to get pretty nervous for tonight's game against Italy. A win would be huge, but it's going to be tough.

Any word on much Van Persie will play? They need RVP more than ever with Robben out.

Some interesting stuff in here

MILAN, June 8 (Reuters) - Chelsea have given AC Milan the green light to approach Didier Drogba about a possible transfer but they are not willing to sell back former player Andriy Shevchenko, the Serie A club's vice president said.

'Chelsea have authorised us to open negotiations with Drogba,' Adriano Galliani said in an interview in Sunday's La Gazzetta dello Sport.

'Unfortunately, the response we feared came (for Shevchenko). Chelsea consider Andriy unsellable. This epilogue makes us very sad.'

Galliani said that the seven-times European champions had also started talks with the agent of Barcelona forward Samuel Eto'o.

He said the Cameroonian was willing to consider a move to the San Siro even though Milan would play in the UEFA Cup next season after finishing fifth in Serie A, but he added that they faced stiff competition from English clubs to sign him.

Galliani reiterated that Milan were interested in Arsenal's Emmanuel Adebayor too, but said they had not asked the London club for permission to make an approach.

Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger has warned Milan not to try to lure away the Togo striker, whose contract with the Premier League outfit runs until 2011.

Wenger said in a separate interview with Sunday's Gazzetta that he was confident Arsenal would hang onto Adebayor and fend off Real Madrid's attempts to sign Spain midfielder Cesc Fabregas.

'There is no chance that Cesc will leave Arsenal so I hope they (the fans) are reassured,' he said.

'(As for Adebayor), in this case the situation seems clear to me too, given that his contract was renewed recently.'

Galliani also told Gazzetta that Milan had agreed to buy the half of Luca Antonini's contract they did not already own from relegated Empoli, with whom the midfielder played last season.
Good to hear Adebayor and Fabregas aren't going anywhere.I wonder what English clubs are after Eto'o.

Sam's Army has at least two chants they use throughout the game... "hey... USA. USA-USA-USAAAAA" seems to be their favorite.Had meant to mention... an hour before the game in the stadium, the US and Argentine fan areas had filled up (opposite the field from each other, behind each goal) and were duking it out with singing and chanting. Argentina had the size, more varied songs and more imporatanly drums. But the US fans (Sam's Army) were fantastic. I've seen a couple of US games, and nothing has come close to this one for the intensity of fan support from our fans.

We bailed out at around 80min mark, not too long after the red card to Pablo- figured there was going to be much to be seen from 5 subs defending a 0-0 game. Had gotten to the stadium early to find a parking spot near the exits too.
if you taped the game, watch these last 10 minutes. Some incredible excitement as the US continued to attack coming forward. Freddy put on a show or two and one counter attack should have seen the US finish the game off.

Mastroeni after the game abou the red:

"The reason why he said he gave me a second yellow was for throwing the ball to a teammate of mine," Mastroeni said. "It was really strange because they were making a substitution and it wasn't like they could play the ball fast or anything."
The ref was abyssmal. There was no good reason for Pablo being sent off, unless he said something really, really vulgar to the guy. I don't understand why we can't get European or Asian refs for our games. :goodposting:

the game started much later than normal due to the showing of the Keller mini ceremony. I extended my DVR by 1 hour so I was able to catch it all.

He might substitute. This is our starting 11:Van der Sar; Boulahrouz, Mathijsen, Ooijer, Van Bronckhorst; De Jong, Engelaar; Kuyt, Sneijder, Van der Vaart; Van Nistelrooy. Keep an eye on Engelaar. He'll be our revelation of the tournament.

Chelsea for one, according to the rumor mongers. Also read that City has given Hughes a boatload to play with and they are now in the running for Ronadihno and possibly Eto'o.
There's an article a couple of pages back, but City has offered Ronaldinho 200,000 pounds per week. They are also allegedly close to signing Jo.

I know soccer people track transfer fees for the scoreboard of determining the worlds most expensive player but not as much score boarding in terms of pure salary.Would this offer to Ro be one of the highest ever for a salary? $400k over 52 weeks breaks the $20M a year mark...Maybe its not given for the full 52 weeks?

Exactly!

France and Romania drew 0-0.

France is F'd. I predicted that they wouldn't do well in this tourney. I do see them making it out of the group stage.

Netherlands - Italy coming up. It should be a GREAT game and will set the tone for both teams.

Heitinga is not playing. No injury, but a personnel decision by Van Basten.

Let me add that it's a little puzzling to me, he's our best defender, IMO, but he had a few not-so-good performances in the last 2 games, but Mathijsen has done much worse and is easily the weakest link in our defense.

Had him on my fantasy squad. Whoops.

I'm not real high on France, but just note that Romania is a great side that should not be overlooked. They won their qualification group including a win and a draw against Holland (who finished second in the group). This is truely the group of death and I think a good example of why the Europeans generally consider this tournament to be more challenging than the World Cup - there are essentially no poor teams (other than an occaisionally weak host-qualifier like Austria and Switzerland this year).

Netherlands Italy should be a great game. Both sides will be looking to their amazing strikers to win it for them... Ruud vs Luca Toni. Love the matchup. As a fan of van Nistelrooy I am rooting for the Dutch. He is back in favor and in form and they will look for him to add to his 31 goals in 62 games!

RUUUUUUUUUUUDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!

if only the USA could develop a guy like either of these. Pure goal scorers.

Wow. That just looked like a terrible call. He looked completely offside. But no call.
thought i read somewhere (and possible in this thread) that a defender off the end line would still hold a guy onside. Defenders cant take themselves out of a play like the forward can so the italian lying behind the goal after getting hammered would count as a 2nd defender and Ruud isnt off.But i could be wrongETA that i know the defender was thrown there by the keeper and didnt take himself out.

France - Romania draw?

Netherlands up three on Italy?

WTH is going on? I know this is supposed to be the "group of death" but seriously? Shut out Italy in the 80th minute - not to mention up THREE?

Draw in France-Romania? The second games will be incredible !!!

88th minute, announcers just said they got clarification and that the italian behind the goal is considered in play and held ruud onside. goal is good.

It'll still be spun as a massive conspiracy in the Italian papers tomorrow morning. They won't have as much of a leg to stand on down 3-0 but still...

There is some debate on ESPN right now. Apparently the rule is if he is deliberately there on the sideline on his own. So the debate is what does "deliberate" mean.

Yeah...Tommy Smyth is basically saying since the ref didn't think he was injured that he was deliberately off the field of play. Since neither the AR or ref called thee offsides its pretty obvious they think the same thing too.

It seems pretty intuitive to me. If the defender can get up and come back into play, then he is in play. It's totally illogical to not count him until he gets back into the play. What if he was running back into the play? One second he counts. Then he doesn't. Then he counts again. The really sad part is he wasn't actually hurt and he just laid there while his team gave up a goal.

what an enjoyable match to watch (except for those who were rooting for italy).

loved the color guy saying how the dutch just don't know how to pull it back and protect a lead.

Here's the conversation we had about the offside rule concerning a player off the endline back in April (it came up in one of the Champions League matches between Liverpool and Arsenal):

Can't find a reference to this in the FIFA rules, but here's what the USSF's Advice to refs has to say about this:

11.11 DEFENDER LEGALLY OFF THE FIELD OF PLAY A defender who leaves the field during the course of play and does not immediately return must still be considered in determining where the second to last defender is for the purpose of judging which attackers are in an offside position. Such a defender is considered to be on the touchline or goal line closest to his off-field position. A defender who leaves the field with the referee's permission (and who thus requires the referee's permission to return) is not included in determining offside position.
According to USSF rules, offside was the wrong call. Not sure what UEFA or FIFA has to say. Oh, and  for Liverpool grabbing an away goal.
Did not see the play but the advice to referees for USSF is the same as FIFA and UEFA rules. A defender stepping off the field of play must still be considered when determining the second to last defender. As well he could be cautioned for unsporting behavior.
The difference about the play today is that Carragher did not step off the field intentionally. He was carried off the field by his momentum as he was trying to make a play on the ball.
as a striker growing up, i was always taught that if you find yourself near the endline and the play is coming back to you, step off the field to avoid being in the play for offside. Then once its cleared hustle to get back onside. Dont see why it wouldnt be the same for the defense. Although a player is not offside if he is not in the play, so i guess thats your difference?
Any player that deliberately steps off the field of play to influence the game in any way (e.g., to create or avoid an offside call) is committing an foul that is punishable by a booking. So in the example you give, you could be given a yellow for doing that. If a defender did that intentionally, the play would not be offside, the ref would let the play continue, and the defender who left the field would be booked after the play had run its course. As for yesterday, Carragher was off the pitch because of his pursuit of an Arsenal player, so he wasn't commiting a foul. However, for the purposes of offside, he is considered to be on the endline nearest to where he is located off the pitch. Therefore, Bendtner was not offside, and if he hadn't had been such a klutz, Arsenal would have scored and won the match. Oh, and Wenger is a whiny little #####. They win that game if they finish their chances. He should complain less to a microphone and more to his strikers.
Never once got booked for it and used it often, esp when the clear was poor and the ball came back quick.Scenario, make a run down the field, cross the ball, no one there. def starts to push out and you are stuck near the endline and the ball comes back, step off and let the play go until a good clear. then hustle back up field to get back onside. Never once called for a foul a booking, etc. It was taught and was a generally good practice. And I have seen it in the EPL.

Not saying i am right or that the refs are wrong or the rule is false or anything. Just pointing out that I have never seen it called that way in my years playing or watching....
Maybe the rules were different for my era... but I was taught to obviously take yourself out of the play when you're caught in the offsides position. Not run out of bounds, but just run back to being ON-sides, making no effort or attempt to move towards the ball or play. IIRC, you had to be a part of the play-either directly, or indirectly to be off-sides... no? I'd go as far as holding my hands up (ala paintball, when you've been "killed" already) when I ran back. Seems to me, that's what I see the pros do as well (not the upheld hand thing). Gotta say- never seen anybody go out of bounds the way you're describing. :lmao: Wish I had seen the Carrack play, so I know more what you're alking about.

When I was 18 or so, at some point in an attmept at goal, I ended up actually IN the goal. Instead of waiting for the play to finish, I stupidly tried to get immediately out and back onto the field. I had to duck to avoid getting hit by a team-mate's rocket of a shot off the rebound from my initial attempt. The goal got called back because I was offsides, having just crossed back over the goal-line into play.

  .... dammit.

Here's the pick of Kasey Keller (or at least the back of his head from afar... :bag: )- he's in the middle of the photo, blue shirt and bald head.

Watched the recorded US game to see if I could get anything more about the Pablo red... wow- I can understand why you guys were so flabbergasted. Cameras didn't show the ref first yellowing Edu, and then marching down to Mastroeni in the wall and yellowing him not long after... just showed the red, whcih seemed to come out of nowhere on TV. Gotta say I was pretty confused at the game- when he didn't red Pablo at first with the 2nd yellow, I figured he was flashing it to Edu again... you know- just to make sure.

Thought the ref was pretty inconsistent and made some strange calls. Seemed to be awestruck by Messi- calling every bump or touch (which is what Pablo seemed to be yapping about)... oddly, looked like he may have been doing the similar thing with Adu (although I didn't see the last 12 minutes or so).

And whoa... LOVED seeing Italy take a thumping today.
