I need eephus to confirm these are surprises, but Ghana tied Comoros, Nigeria tied Swaziland, and Senegal tied Madagascar in CAF WC qualifying today.

Wait, what is Comoros?
just had to google it... looks amazing- small island nation in indian ocean between Madagascar's north tip and Tanzania on the mainland.

have to figure that's a massive result.

like St Vincent and the Grenadines getting points off the US.

I don't think any away draw is a shock result in African soccer. The return legs of the tie are on a quick turnaround next week. None of the big countries are in huge jeopardy if they take care of business at home. The knockout format does leave the door open for an early fluky elimination.

The only semi-notable home loss was an Adabayorless Togo giving up an away goal by Uganda. Uganda has a higher FIFA ranking for whatever that's worth.

I'm just happy that I wasn't the only one who didn't know. Thought it was some kind of big wingless bird.

See..I at least knew Comoros was an island...of course I had no clue these were home and away legs or they were all played at the lower seed.

The Comorian squad are mostly from lower division French clubs but midfielder Jimmy Abdou was voted Millwall's player of the year last season. They don't appear to play many matches; FIFA.com shows two friendlies in 2012 and no games at all in 2013.

On the other hand, they have the same number of votes in FIFA as Germany.

My daughter was supposed to go to the game tonight to see her boy Griezmann but her friend flaked out right before she was going to buy tickets last weekend. (The cheap seats were EU55 BTW) So she ended up watching it from a bar on the Left Bank. The last text she sent me before news of the attacks was to ask whether the FMNT had any more friendlies at Stade de France before she comes back. There is one more scheduled: Mar 29 vs Russia. Man, I hope they move that fixture anywhere.

Griezmann's sister apparently escaped the theater attack. Glad the Eephlet is safe.

eeph- so glad your daughter is ok... horrifying stuff.

just reading on ESPN that Lass Diarra lost a cousin in the attacks.

and yeah... that one of the bombers had tickets to the game and got caught/frisked outside trying to get in. not getting in is a silver lining, I guess. :(

Garber gave a long interview today with some very interesting comments. The best part for me is something all fans have been begging for. And that is to stop worrying about being the best league in the world and worry more about being the best in CONCACAF first, which means catching Liga MX.

The bolded below is just :lmao: :lmao:

=================================

“It takes us from where we are today, to spending about three times more money that we’re spending now, that’s just to be able to beat the Mexicans on a regular basis,” he stated. “It’s not getting our top teams to spend more, it’s getting our middle teams to spend more so that we’re competitive against these clubs on a day to day basis. And once we get Mexico, then we’ll go to the next level, go to the next level.”

“The league and the lower leagues and the federation have to get very connected on youth development, because ultimately I’m not sure its delivering the value that we all need -- U17s U20s, U23s have not had great success, so something has got to change,” he said after his address. “And we all need to come together as a sport in this country to try to fix that.”

“I will absolutely assure you whether it’s seven years, or its longer than that, I may or may not be around, this league will be one of the dominant leagues in the world in time,” he said. “It has to be because there’s so many things happening with the soccer movement. You have owners that are coming in that really believe in the sport, broadcasters that do, youth development that’s thriving, players that want to play here from abroad. Our national team coaches aren’t ####ting on our league as much as they used to.”

Also Garber said that the league will soon be announcing that St Phil will be selling one of his two teams (he owns the Galaxy and 50% of the dynamo). Garber did not say which team was for sale.

World events made it really easy to avoid spoilers for yesterday's game so I watched Bosnia-Herz v. Ireland today. When they started the game it looked like the San Siro after a big pre-match pyrotechnics show but the fog kept growing thicker and thicker. By the second half, the high camera could sort of pick out the blue home shirts but the Irish team and the ball faded into Bolivia. It wasn't pretty for obvious reasons but it was a good result for Ireland heading into the home leg.

NY Cosmos playing Ottawa Fury for NASL championship right now on ESPN3.

This is the final game for both Raul and Marco Senna's careers. By all accounts, they've been heads down, get the job done as the season wrapped up. Really pissed at myself for not seeing either play. ... especially Senna, one of my favorite players in recent years.

NY is up 1-0 heading into the half.

also, my old college teammate is now general manager.

Good to see Hungary, one of the past giants of world soccer, get back into the finals of a major tournament for the first time since Mexico 86.

Wow. Barnburner of a game, 3-2 to the good guys, with a nasty red against ottawa (two-footed stomp on a prone player). Goals weren't exactly pretty.

Penalty to Ireland! I didn't see a thing, even after multiple replays. My rudimentary Spanish indicates the announcers are saying its a handball??

Walters converts and Ireland leads 2-1 aggregate.

Good father-son moment today when Beckham Jr. came on for his old man.

Was a cool moment. Dad came back on a few minutes later and they got to have a few interchanges with the ball. Son Becks even took a corner which Dad Becks got his head on, too bad it went over. Fun game to watch, lot of great players and entertainment. Scholes had more shots on goal in the first half then United has had in like 3 games. He and Ronoldinho look like they could still play in the EPL.

Because his harm was tucked up near his chest? No way it's a card
Which hand did it hit? Hard to tell in the vine. Hard to imagine a handball call if it was off his right hand tucked into his body. His left hand would be a PK and potentially a card.

One of the current soccer writers on twitter, tweeted a link to this yesterday and it got me down reading it. Jeff Bradley (brother of Bob) was one of the first soccer writers I read and now can't find a writing job.

As I was reading that, I could not help but think an MLS communications job would be perfect for him as he has been around the league since day 1, but then I got to the paragraph where he tried that route :(

Journalism is a rough gig these days.....

You can't really struggle with social media and land a MLS communications job, unfortunately.

Yeah, I can't help but think he pissed off someone somewhere and got black balled in the soccer world. He's also hamstrung since he seems tied to the NJ coast area and frankly there aren't a ton of jobs in that area unless you want to commute into the NYC area and doesn't seem up (or frankly want to be up) on Twitter/Facebook etc.

95% of the writers job these days is self-promotion and if you don't want to actively do that, you're sort of screwed.

I guess it depends on what he struggles with.

If he can't delegate or even just understand the technology then he would be dead but most of the people who work in the front offices are rarely on social media representing the club. They tend to funnel that through one employee for facebook and twitter and instagram.

I know more about the Revs for instance than most humans alive but I could barely name 25% of the communications department.

Friendly between Holland and Germany which was supposed to take place in Hannover has been cancelled due to a suspicious object found outside stadium.

Egypt beat Chad 4-0 to qualify for the 3rd round. Chad won the first leg 1-0 so it was a bit scary, but Egypt dominated the match. Fingers crossed 2018 is the year they finally qualify.

I only root against one team in qualifying and sadly I have to report that Qatar has comfortably moved on to round 3 in Asian Qualifying.

Asia Round 3 will be 2 groups of 6. Top 2 from each group move on while the 3rd place team from each group moves into a playoff stage that will culminate in playing the 4th place team from the Concacaf hex.

At least they didn't target the St. Kitts and Nevis friendly at Estonia, which is proceeding without incident. Estonia leads 3-0 at HT with goals from Antonov, Puri and a cracker from Vassiljev.

I can't get enough of this Benzema / Valbuena story. As Billy Haisley writes at Deadspin:

Imagine Chris Bosh getting investigated in a blackmailing scheme targeting Tyson Chandler over a sex tape, and over the days following the gradual accretion of evidence leading you from “Hold up, there’s no way he actually did this, right?” to “Holy ####, he actually probably did this!?!”
It really is pretty cool. "Can you see my tattoos?"
It's weird that the days of making jokes about sex tape blackmail now seems like a distant, altogether more innocent time. The universe is always more awful than you can imagine.

Whoa...they found an ambulance filled with explosives
Jesus. This German team is either really unlucky or really lucky depending on how you look at it.
Lucky...BILD is saying Hannover is basically on lockdown for the night. Not fun.
