Took my 8 year old daughter to the United at Galaxy game Sat night.  She loved it.  Before the game she says "Daddy, is it just me or are there more United fans then LA fans here?"  Of course there are....

She loved the "Glory Glory Man United" song and the chantting "United! United!"

on pace for a perfect season!
All it takes is a measly 300 mil expenditure to get @Soulfly3 back in the saddle!  This is shaping up to be an extremely interesting Serie A season, only possible competitively due to subtraction (Bonucci) rather than addition.  Let's not kid ourselves.  That being said, I truly see Napoli as the favorites now...not by what they added, rather what they maintained.  IF Roma do get Mahrez to replace thatEgyptiandude, the plot does indeed thicken...

Hopefully you explained to her that MLS fans treat these games like a plague at this point.

Even the teams themselves look like they are sick of them.  From what I could tell LA started its USL team again.  It is only the bean counters who seem to like these games as related to the teams.

Agreed.  The stadium wasnt even sold out.  But it is always more United fans then Galaxy, was the same 3 years ago in the rose bowl.

But yeah, LA started its B or C team.  Too bad Jermaine Jones didnt get to play vs Fellaini.  Jones seemed more intent in trying to hurt someone (mostly Pogba) then playing the game.  Would have loved Fro to level him.

United started its B+ team (Herrera, De Gea and Valencia started.  Pogba, Lukaku, Bailley, Lindelof, Mkhy, Martial all came on in 2nd half)

Oh and in the row behind us was a guy I grew up with.  Haven't seen him since high school but there we were.  Crazy small world.

how did this game go from drawing  more than 86,000 three years ago to not selling out Stub Hub?
No idea.  All I can think is the ticket pricing, and maybe the Galaxy having a bad year.  Maybe Stub Hub isnt a draw like the Rose Bowl?  Maybe the 7-0 result 3 years ago made Galaxy fans stay away? Maybe just an off year... Was surprising.

Still fun and glad my daughter wanted to go.  She has been to a couple Dodger games and now a United game.  She says we need to go to a Charger game now.  Not sure she'll want to sit for 4 hours though, she isnt really a football fan.

"and now a United game"...."she isn't really a football fan"...

Obviously.

I did not watch the game but I was kind of shocked at the final score line.  Knowing that RSL just beat the full LA team 6-2 at Stub Hub just recently and that LA started players against Man U I have never heard of before, I assumed this was going to be one of those 15-0 Bundesliga friendly type scores.

I assume Man United simply stopped trying at some point?

Yeah the score line was odd.  LA put in their first team at the half, including their top keeper.  Although United did too.  Martial and Mkhi scored but Martial and Lukaku both had multiple chances saved or missed.  Rashford had a 1v1 saved in the first half after getting his 2.  LA tightened up in the 2nd half to their credit.  Dos Santos looked good. Van Damme helped too.  He is a big boy and he and Lukaku both showed good strength trying to out muscle each other.  LA Keeper had a strong 2nd half and probably helped save the scoreline.

For United, Lindelof and Bailley looked good in the 2nd but their communication needs improvement.  1st game together and a couple times it was "you get it no you get it".  3rd string keeper was in too.  Still should have kept it clean vs LA but silver lining is they know they have a few things to work on.

Nothing like a stadium full of fans booing Ashley Cole every time he touched the ball.

LA put in their first team at the half,
ahh this is where I misread I think.  I mistakenly thought that some players like Jones and Allesandrini (by FAR LA's best player) did not sub in until late.  That result makes more sense then.

They may have come in at the 60 mins mark. 2 players subbed in after the half started and I think Jones was one of them since it was his first game back.  Don't know much about the Galaxy players outside JJ, Cole, Dos Santos and Van Damme.  My Mom said the 2nd half keeper was LA's #1, although it was right after he stonewalled Lukaku... after giving it away to Pogba.

I also think United were experimenting with a 3-5-2, with Darmian and Fosu Mensah as wing backs.

Highlight was the incomparable Julie Stewart-Binks interviewing Jose after the game. Must-watch tv.

I will have to watch that! Recorded it.  The next morning I started and watched the intro with Twellman showing how unprepared he is.  Watched the first goal again, then saved the rest for later.

A guy in reddit performed a statistical study of corner kicks to try and prove or disprove the effectiveness of corner kicks in terms of scoring goals.  Here are his results:

11234 matches analysed
115199 corners played
30812 goals scored
1459 goals came from corners
57.3% of corners lead to nothing (team loses the ball)
26.0% of corners are not crosses (short pass)
15.4% of corners lead to chance creation
8.25% chances created from corners lead to goal
4.74% goals scored from corners
1.27% of corners lead to goal

15.4 matches to wait for a goal from corner (for a single team to score)
5.13 corners per match (for a single team)

That's actually a little better than I expected.  Didn't the Soccernomics guys argue that goals conceded on counters from corners were just as prevalent as goals from corners? That always seemed highly suspect to me.

@B MaverickI hope you were not watching tonight.  An uneducated viewer would not have been wrong to assume Felliaini was the USL player on the field :)   He was brutal in the time I watched.
He was brutal.  I mean the game was poor overall minus some nice work on the goals but overall, so bad.  Fellaini couldnt even get his free header on frame.  Both games he has been poor (aside from his goal) and as usual kills any attack or flow United has.  Please let Perreria take over that spot.

Lingard gets too much love too.  He has no vision, no sense of positioning, he cant run off someone else and he usually ends up in the way or out of position. He is a good squad player and has value but he gets too much time in games at the cost of better players.

The SLC game was hard to watch.  United landed at noon and went straight to the field.  They looked it.  Couldn't control a ball, didnt have their legs under them for anything.  And Jones got easily pushed off the ball leading to the goal.  Good response though to get the 2 after going down.  Lukaku nice goal despite the expected bad first touch.  Set up the 1st goal with some nice control though.  Was glad to see a little fight in Martial.  He needs to show a little anger.

Also, anyone watching could tell the Valencia foul was coming.  Either he or Herrera was going to light someone up the way the ref was officiating this friendly.  Not excusing Valencia but for most of the game to that point including all of the 1st half the ref was non existent.  Mata gets whacked from behind and I am not sure he even called a foul.  Its a friendly and the ref let it get to that point.  Neither team wants an injury and the ref let a lot of grabbing, pushing, shoving and player kicking go.  So Valencia lit up the player that injured Mata.

According to Jose the ref told him to sub Valencia or he will give him a red.  Jose told him no.  Thats why the red took so long to come out.

Then there's ESPN.  From the start they were terrible.  They showed the lineup for United with a 4-3-3 and Pogba holding with Carrick on the left in front of him.  Seriously?  Then to end the game they showed a stat with United having 0 corners.  Wrong again.  Meanwhile the two yahoos in the booth werent even watching.  Just hitting prescripted talking points like "What do you think of Jose's rep for not playing Youth?".  "If anyone can answer to that it Lukaku".  Cmon guys you do know that teenagers logged more minutes last season under Jose then the top 5 combined (or close to it).

All in all they are getting in the work, mixing it up and even got to work on playing a man down....  On to City in Houston on Thursday.

That's actually a little better than I expected.
1 out of a 100 corners was lower than I expected.  I was expecting more in the 1 out of 60 range.

The study also came up with one other kind of outrageous conclusion based on the data that I did not bother posting about.  The teams that have a higher rate of scoring on corners also have a higher rate of being relegated :)

Huge pressure from my son and other soccer dads here to go to this game.  I've relented and agreed to buy the boy a ticket and let him go with one of them. I've got no interest in these.
How much did it cost?  Does your son know Ronaldo is not with Madrid?

I typically hate these friendlies, but there have been some fun moments over the years in the all star game.

This is probably my favorite

I don't yet know the cost, but agreed to pay for his ticket if he can get in with a buddy.  I saw Chelsea lose to the MLS All-stars many years ago at Toyota Park.  CFC were still on the beach, Joe Cole got injured.

There's a guy in London who's trying to see a league game in all 55 UEFA countries this season. He's already been to a game in Georgia.

Georgians tend to have amazing close control but with both teams I watched, it looked like players had a couple of cigarettes at half-time. You always get open spaces late on in matches but after about 65 minutes of this one you could have driven buses through some of the spaces. I must check if a Georgian team has ever met an Icelandic one in European competition because I’d be intrigued to see that: I suspect fitness would beat finesse.

I'm totally biased but I thought Josef Martinez would make it from Atlanta.  Not surprised they have 3 but surprised 2 of the 3 are defenders.
