will record it and try to watch after the US game.
Floppo, maybe you can help me in regards to Red Bull Arena for the qualifier.  I have to move my daughter into Trinity in Hartford the day before the US Costa Rica game.

Instead of driving back north I was thinking of maybe grabbing a hotel in Hartford for the night.

Do you know if there is any train service that could get me from Hartford to RBA if I don't want to drive?

I always take PATH to and from the city.

but when I take Amtrak to DC, or NJ Transit to the shore, it goes right by RBA. have to figure there's a stop in harrison on one of those. or you transfer somewhere and jump to PATH.

eta: here's the google direction for rail... might be a better way.

Chelsea are having a good summer, imo.  Getting Conte extended might have been one of their better moves.

Looks like they will miss out on Danilo.  Apparently after a couple of days watching Kyle Walker, Pep decides he needs to upgrade RB...
Oh Jesus Christ...Sinn has gone Blue on us.  Typical Juve fan.

Just a nitpik, but a potentially significant one with this club/owner - the club didn't actually extend Conte as was reported, just gave him a pay raise over the existing two years left on his contract.  The concern is that perhaps they moved more into his guaranteed salary, but reduced the buy out if he leaves.
You poor souls.

fwiw- smarty pants over there realized it's on thursday night, not tonight. **alert**    **alert**
Yeah, we all know Triple A is smarter than the rest of us  :P

This time of year, I go into the DVR box schedule on Monday and look at the ESPNs / Foxs / NBCs to look for football programming. I basically skip right past the 30-minute listings because I know those are usually a bunch of people yelling at each other.

This is a good week: Roma/PSG tonight then the 30/30 followed by a couple teams named Manchester. I can live with that.

Uh... Hello... US tonight
Also set up for that. Gotta pitch the tent early due to being at work by 4 a.m. tomorrow  :yucky: . Best part is, I'll not see any results.

My schedule for Thursday:

Leave work at noonish, get home start :banned:

1. USMNT

2. Roma/PSG

3. Review the two Man U matches (Lots of fast forwarding)

4. Check DVR for any missed stuff

5. Nap

6. Resume :banned:

7. Update sheets for the FFA EPL Draft (Hopefully make a pick or two)

8. Watch those Manchester teams play live

9. Pass out

@NewlyRetired, I'm starting to come over to your side regarding the ICC.

Years ago, I would watch the broadcasts to see who the role players on teams were. It helped me immensely with my first FFA EPL Draft and the fullback position in particular. Without those broadcasts, I wouldn't know who the Juan Cuadrado and Bacary Sagna types of football were. Now, it's just a mess and I only watch to see who the youth players are.

I've been to one ICC match, Chelsea v. PSG in Charlotte 2015 and if I'm correct, @Slapdash made it to that match also. We were fortunate enough to see full starting squads for at least the first half. I don't remember who scored for the Blues, but Zlatan put one in for PSG that afternoon. The match finished level at one and Thibaut Courtois scored the game-winning PK. That alone was worth the $100 for my Club-Level seat. I remember posting about those matches and you posting that the cumulative scores were basically 1-1 or 2-1 over time. You were right (surprise, surprise). I'll probably not go back to any ICC matches now, but that was one to remember.

Thanks to TV I don't have to blow a wad for the stuff being put out there now. So props to @NewlyRetired

I think these friendlies would be SO much better if the subs were limited to 6 or so players.

The other night against Manchester United, I think RSL used 17 subs.  It was ludicrous.

These games will still be a draw because these represent the only time these teams can be seen live by many of their fans.

Ticket sales are down across the board but I think the games are still plenty viable for the promoters.

I agree on all points.

My wife and I attended that ICC match. We had a great time and she doesn't do a whole lot of sports. Won't go into the story about getting Club Level seats, let's just say, I got lucky.

Last summer I knew the ICC wouldn't be much because of the Euros. I was right. Told her if there was a match in Charlotte this summer we'd go (we have family in Raleigh so we'd make a trip of it.) No match in Charlotte this year, thankfully. In the future, I'll consider some trips. Right now, it's way easier to plan a trip to the Outer Banks and just watch TV.

Good night, all

Go USMNT  :headbang:

Yeah, I was there and that was a fun game. Seeing Zlatan in action (if only for a half) was awesome.

I currently live in Charlotte, so I'll head down for any of the ICC games here.  @Mjolnirs came up for the Julian Green hattrick last year.  Unless you are a fan of one specific team, it is hard to travel much.  We went up to DC for Barcelona vs. ManU and Barcelona hadn't brought really anyone.

Unfortunately, the buffoonery in Raleigh about bathrooms froze us out from both ICC and Gold Cup this year.  The 4-4 Gold Cup game in 2015 between Mexico and T&T was so damn fun.

Gianluca Vialli was the first Italian manager in England. Ranieri, Ancelotti, DiMatteo and Conte. Italians are at home in West London. Forza the Chels.
Lets not forget our great Italian players. Gianfranco Zola. And Carlo Cudicini. And Sam Della Bonna.

African Cup of Nations is moving to summer and expanding from 16 to 24 teams effective w/ AFCON '19.

I'm not a fan of either but some clubs will welcome the change.  I like having an international competition fall smack dab in the middle of the club season.  The weather in some parts of the continent will be brutal in June/July and few nations have the infrastructure to accommodate 50% more teams and ~10 more games.

In terms of getting to RBA from out of the area - just set your trip to go to Newark Penn Station (make sure Newark Penn - not New York Penn).  RBA is a 90 second PATH ride from Newark Penn.

yet another f mex thing... no US born players allowed in their brand new women's league.... even players who play for mexico. f that federation.

It was a phone call that threw former Mexico youth international Jazmin Aguas' fledgling career into limbo.

Aguas was in the Chivas club house in Guadalajara, where the 24-year-old from Escondido, California, had been working hard for four months to prepare for the start of the inaugural women's professional soccer league, Liga MX Femenil, on July 28.

Almost exactly a month to the day from the historic first game, Aguas' friend Clarissa Robles -- a current Mexico international also from California -- was about to board a flight to begin a career at Tigres in the Liga MX Femenil, but found out through her coach that no player born outside of Mexico's borders could be registered.

Robles called her friend Aguas to find out if she was in the same situation. Aguas ran down to find the Chivas staff to enquire. But after initially being reassured, it became clear that the Liga MX had closed the doors to Mexican-American players born in the United States, even if they are Mexico national team players.

When the formation of the league was announced in December, Liga MX president Enrique Bonilla had said that Mexican-U.S. dual nationals would be welcomed. But Article 8 of the league's rules indicates that there has been a reversal: "Only players born in Mexico can participate in Liga MX Femenil tournaments."

According to players, clubs appeared to have been unaware until late June and Club America was holding tryouts in Chicago just last week. Chivas manager Luis Fernando Camacho certainly didn't know when Aguas came to ask about her situation.

I am expecting this may not go well

I think it makes sense to move it since more and more players are getting into the euro leagues.  Don't know much about the weather there in that time, it is winter so I guess there could be those kinds of issues?

I think only a few nations are far enough south that a summer tournament would offer some relief from the heat. A large portion of the continent is clustered around the equator, no?

I know it's silly season but there are some media outlets giving increasing credence to the Neymar-to-PSG rumors. That would be insane.

saw something on ESPNfc about barca essentially putting it into his hands. was it something like 225mil?!

a total aside... a nice feature piece on Alphonso Davies- the 16yo kid tearing it up for Canada at the GC (well- until last night). Liberia/ghanan refugees.

It seems like there might actually be some fire behind all the smoke on this one.  It will be very interesting to watch Neymar's development as a player and team leader if he leaves Barcelona.

Question for the La Liga observers -- has Barca done anything substantial this summer to address the aging of their midfield?

They are targeting Coutinho, so far unsuccessfully.

I've heard Christian Eriksen is on their radar, but not sure they can get him at this point of the summer - and I have not heard that they are actively trying, as much as just keeping an eye out.  He would want to go, but I don't think Spurs would sell right now.

Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I was just looking at a map of Africa. I'll never remember it all. For that matter, I'm lost on an unmarked map of the Balkans, too.
and some of it will have changed by the next time you look at a map... and some of them, they just gave up trying. central african republic? western sahara? might as well just call the countries "we're right here".
