Cristiano accused of rape. 2009 in Vegas.  A settlement was reached, but the victim's new lawyers found some bad #### from the footy leaks last year.
How do you "reach settlement" on a rape charge? Isn't that a criminal act?

It’s common for high profile, wealthy men to resolve sexual assault claims by agreement with the victim. Typically, the negotiated settlement involves payment to the victim in exchange for confidentiality, including an agreement not to speak with police or testify in court. If the victim won’t cooperate and testify (colloquially referred to as “not pressing charges”), a prosecutor almost certainly can’t indict.  The assault itself gives rise to civil claims as well as criminal, which are threatened and then settled out of court. In this case they had a formal pre-suit mediation back in 2009. The current lawsuit was almost certainly preceded by demands and negotiations. The current lawsuit seeks among numerous other claims, a declaration that the earlier settlement agreement is void, unenforceable, mostly due to information that came out last year in the “Football Leaks” dump.

Good article from the Spiegel, which was and is at the forefront of this story and all the Football Leaks stuff: http://www.spiegel.de/international/cristiano-ronaldo-kathryn-mayorga-the-woman-who-accuses-ronaldo-of-rape-a-1230634.html

I couldn't read the whole thing. If he did this, he needs to be punished, harshly.

What is Football Leaks?
Football Leaks is like Wikileaks, only centered on football.  They mostly release contracts, wage info and the like, but also got into things like Messi's charitable foundation, tax disputes, etc.  Last year they reported on a few stories involving Ronaldo and sexual assault, including this one in Vegas from 2009. I am surprised at the lack of reporting on this, but who knows?  Maybe I'm not reading it correctly.

Some very interesting comments in this twitter thread from a guy at the Spiegel, which is a highly-regarded German news magazine.  Some of these docs are truly confidential. Whoever leaked them committed a major breach of trust and likely serious violation of professional standards.  That said, this is some bad stuff if true.

No inside info. Just local insight. It isn't going to happen. Nothing ever gets done in San Diego. Even if the measure gets voted through someone will sue the city and delay the progress. MLS will move on. If we take away my cynicism on that part, this initiative is being opposed by San Diego State. They want the same land to expand their campus and build their own stadium for their football team. They are billing the fight as education over capitalist opportunism. It's pretty frustrating. SDSU was on board with the soccer plan for a while, but then more developers joined them and decided they'd be better off and make more money if they cut the soccer guys out. End of the day they are both going to end up harming each other's causes enough that neither will pass and nothing will get done.

The very last part of the german article said there is no statute of limitations for sexual assault in Nevada.

Evidence is there. Waiting on an investigation and a cooperative victim.

I am cringing every time FIFA 2019 is advertised. EA is using Ronaldo like crazy in the ads.

This will be the key. Is a blank check worth more than justice? I have no idea.

we talked last year about how MLS was getting flooded with solid South American players.  This tweet shows that effect

Just like the Paraguay squad.... more MLS players than any other country in the new Venezuela squad. A sign of the times

International break after the weekend's games.  Would be the time to move on from Jose, especially if they do not crush Newcastle.

More niche soccer has been added to ESPN+.  Probably only for pure junkies but sadly I may actually watch the Allsvenskan to catch some American's who are playing over there.

Soccer fans: ESPN announced today it has acquired multi-year rights agreement for Coppa Italia, the Supercoppa Italiana, the Danish Superliga, Sweden’s Allsvenskan and Indian Super League. All we be on ESPN+

What a rough week for Bayern.  A 1-1 draw with Augsburg last Tuesday, a 2-0 loss at Hertha Berlin on Saturday, and a 1-1 draw with Ajax today.

Sure, it isn't the worst, but Bayern going 0-2-1 in a week is unusual.

Bleacher Report Live (whatever that is) -- here I come!

Also, 538s Global Soccer Club Rankings.

Obviously it's just one effort, but it shows Liverpool (5) playing five of the world's best eleven teams in the span of 23 days:  @Tottenham (10), PSG (7), @Chelsea (8), @Napoli (11), City (1).  Brutal stretch.

And odds for today's match Liverpool 43% - 29% Napoli, with a draw at 28%.

I can't remember if we have any St Louis residents in this thread but it looks like an MLS expansion with a stadium is back on the table again

That was the issue the first time. The county wasn't involved when that's where most of the support would come from.

For those unfamiliar, St. Louis City is the area of the center of the city including downtown. St. Louis County is the area outside of the city and where most people live and where most of the money is.

I hadn't heard this revived push so I'll look into it more.

This is probably more speculation than fact but the Spanish media is reporting the Arsenal has purchased Almiron from Atlanta and he will move over the winter break.

There could be no better out come of this mess IMO.  I hope this comes true

The other reason I might get to see the Crew play again is that the longer this will-they-or-won’t-they-move saga drags on, the chances of them staying put figures to increase. That’s the hope, anyway. I’m no expert on the complex and evolving situation — for that and all things Crew, Columbus Dispatch reporter Andrew Erickson is your guy — but two Columbus-based contacts I’ve spoken to recently both agreed, without being asked, that the outcome they see as most likely as time goes on is that the team is sold to local investors, with MLS granting current owner Precourt Sports Ventures an expansion team in Austin. Fingers crossed that they’re right:

Almiron's dad just cleared things up a bit, telling a reporter that Arsenal are talking to Almiron's agent but have not yet contacted Atlanta.

Saw this on twitter about Giovinco.  What a horrendous waste by Italy during a time they struggled offensively and ultimately cost them a WC spot.

======================

Sebastian #Giovinco's last game for #Italy was Euro 2016 qualifier vs Norway in October 2015. He played 28 minutes off the bench, totally changed the game, and created both #Azzurri goals in 2-1 comeback win. Shouldn't have taken 3 years for another call-up.

Played 28 minutes in Euro 2016 qualifier, immediately jumped on plane back to Toronto, played for #TFC the SAME DAY, scored sensational solo goal to send them to playoffs for first time.  See below for goal.

best stat I will see all week I think :)

======

Paco Alcacer is the top goal scorer in the Bundesliga with 6 goals.

He has played only 81 minutes all season.

Almiron injures his leg in the game yesterday - he was crying as they took him off the pitch.  Repeat of last season.

And for those who didn’t see it - home grown 16 year old George Bello became the 6th youngest MLS scorer in just his 3 match.  Kid already deserves to start at left back over McCann (assuming Garza doesn’t come back)

Poor Kovac's honeymoon is over.  Bayern started 7-0-0 19:2 in all competitions, and have gone 0-2-2 2:7 in the last two weeks.
They've also fallen to 5th in the table (6th if Leipzig win today).  For the league overall, I think this is a good thing.  But, you know the top brass at Bayern won't hesitate break out the ax.

Big news today. John Terry was still trying to play pro ball. Less big news...he retires.

Mbappe with 4.

RBs win in a breeze at SJ to keep up with AU.

Anybody have news on Almiron? Would suck to lose him at this point.

almost every paper\rag in England says he is going to Arsenal this winter.  I read earlier today he is expected to not play the rest of the regular season with the injury.

Atlanta is up 6 points with 2 games left for the Champions League spot over Red Bull.  NY gets in if they win out and Atlanta loses both.
