MLS senior VP of sporting development Ali Curtis says MLS is planning to implement the rule that only captains can speak with the referee on the field, as we saw at the Euros this summer:“There’s a lot of momentum to have that rule implemented in MLS. I really like that rule.”

I believe the Bundesliga is implementing the rule this season as well.

If they actually do this, they all need to make the refs be ruthless about it. As soon as anybody else walks up to them, they need to start pulling the card out. If the player continues...brandish the yellow. Players will stop within a couple games until the season.

Sorry Cavan... (From NYT)

McKenna Whitham became the youngest player to debut in a first-division men’s or women’s soccer match in the United States on Sunday, making history one day after her 14th birthday.

In the 80th minute, Whitham came into the match for NJ/NY Gotham FC, replacing Katie Stengel in a 2-1 win over the Washington Spirit in their NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup match at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania. While Whitham was only on the pitch for a brief 17 minutes, her attacking prowess was evident. She pressured the Spirit’s backline while on the pitch and was quick on her feet.

Two days prior, Gotham announced they had signed Whitham as a national team replacement player for the current Olympics window. The club also announced they signed Whitham to a historic, four-year deal that begins on January 1.

The California native, who will be moving with her family to New Jersey, is believed to be the youngest player to feature in any North American professional sports league since the 1970s, according to Elias Sports Bureau. That includes debuts in the NBA, WNBA, NFL and NHL.

Was at Sofi for the Arsenal v United preseason game over the weekend. The pitch looked pretty good and seemed to hold up well. Bodes well for the WC.

We were behind the goal where they took the PKs. Great view. First time at Sofi for me. Seemed pretty loud and a decent atmosphere. Enjoyed the game.

🇵🇾⚽️ Paraguayan midfielder Diego Gomez will join Brighton & Hove Albion from Inter Miami.

When all is said & done, he will be:

🇺🇸💰$14 million (most expensive departure in Inter Miami’s history)
✈️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 £10.8 million (fifth most expensive Paraguayan transfer of all time)

A blonde gets a job as a physical education teacher of 16 year olds. She notices a boy at the end of the field standing alone, while all the other kids are running around having fun kicking a ball.

She takes pity on him and decides to speak to him. “You ok?’ she says. ‘Yes.’ he says. You can go and play with the other kids you know’ she says. ‘It’s best I stay here.’ he says. ‘Why’s that sweetie?’ says the blonde. The boy looks at her incredulously and says, “Because I’m the Goalie !”

Bundesliga 2 starts today :excited:

ManUnited looking like we're in for another longgggg season ahead. Really did not much to address issues at CB - let Varane go, and added Yoro who is young and more of a bit of a project, oh and already out for 3 months. Love Martinez, but he's seemingly always hurt, maybe because he's a bit undersized for the EPL. Not sure if Maguire or Lindeloff can be relied upon, and I guess I'm not alone as Jonny Evans brought back for another year. Maybe getting Shaw back will be great. Maybe not, he seems to always be hurt as well, and/or unfit. Malacia out for months still, AWB on his way out and in return we are targeting Mazraoui, who, you guessed it, is injury prone. I would have been much happier if DeLigt was in the fold.
I'm really interested to see in what role Sancho plays this year. I have a feeling, within a month, there will be another fall out with ETH and he's off to Dortmund again, as for a big club, they always seem to be selling (Fulkrig looks out, and Moukako is begging to leave).
Rashford dinged, Hojlund hurt, should be 10 points or so behind City by Halloween ffs

One team that is doing some interesting business (to me) is Fulham. They were never going to keep Paulinha, but they brought in Ryan Sessengon on a free (remember him?) and another guy in the where are they now files, Smith Rowe. Both players just 24 so maybe they turn the corners in their potential

I kind of thought Leverkusen was going to be sellers after their title run, but Alonso stays, and it looks like they're fully committed to make another run at it. You knew Bayern would come after Wirtz, but he's staying, and I bet he doesn't leave until Alonso goes as he flourishes in this style of play. Leverkusen could have made a ton of money off him and rebuilt, but this is the kind of player you just don't let go yet. There's some interest in Tah and he could bring in some money, but the one player I think they'll let leave is Schick! He just doesn't fit great into this system and Boniface is clearly #1 strike option. They'll need more because they will play a lot of games this year, not sure who is on their radar yet. But, they brought in two great transfers in Garcia and Terrier. I'm way less familiar with Garcia, but I saw a snippet that he was one of the leading players last year in through balls in LaLiga, and should fit in just about perfectly here. Leverkusen had the steal of the decade last year with Grimmaldo, this one not quite as big a theft, but a great get. Terrier kind of a player that just lost his way, had a few very good seasons at Lyon, and then dipped and was forgotten. He's just 27 and will not be relied upon to carry too significant a load, this should be another great fit.

I could ramble on all day, but one last guy is Jake O'Brien to Everton could be a fantastic get. I think he was Lyon's best player last year, just 23, and a massive presence in the box on corners at 6'6", perfect guy for the EPL.

last thing, I saw City was penalized for FFP. Points deduction like other teams? Of course not, a 30 million euro fine. So ridiculously stupid. It's akin to a luxury tax in NBA, every team would pay that for the trophies they've won. WEll, except for Levy, because he's cheap af, and doesn't ever win trophies.

Yeah rough start already. Was at both the Arsenal and Real Betis games. Several are going to be thrown in the deep end for sure. Depth to be tested, but I think they have addressed enough to compete early. CB may still be an issue though.

Yoro was looking bright and was looking forward to him next to Martinez. Evans looked solid and would much rather see him then Maguire/Lindelof. Fish may get called into action as well. Defense depends on Martinez though. When he is in, they are so strong. Hopefully they can complete de Ligt asap and get him in. Sell one of Maguire or Lindelof.

Shaw should be back, and I did like what I saw from Amass on the left.
Dalot on the right. Don't know enough about Mazraoui to comment vs AWB. AWB is suspect going forward, in the air, and defending the back post. Any improvement on those means an upgrade.

Zirkzee may get the call earlier then expected with Hojlund out. Sancho started in the 9 vs Real Betis.

Amad is ready. He should start on the right.
Rashford was looking lively, needs to find his touch again. Got stepped on, no reports on if he is out. If he is, Sancho and Garnacho can be there.

Collyer looks good and ready to go in the MF. Not sure if he is a 6 or an 8 yet, but if he can be a 6, he will be nice with Mainoo and Bruno. Mount, Erikson, Casemiro in support.
Sell McT, don't make the Lingard mistake.

Community Shield next Saturday will be interesting as to who plays, esp with 6 main starters just getting back to camp and some injuries.

They got fined for FFP? Hadn't seen anything on that.

I did see: Manchester City have been fined £2.09m by the Premier League for 22 instances of delaying the kick-off or restart of matches. The champions have accepted the sanction, which relates to rule infringements over the past two seasons, the league has confirmed

Sorry, i think this is what I was looking for. Saw they got fined, just ASSUMED it was for FFP, but alas, I'm an old.

I really am excited to see the attack - Amad Fernandes Garnacho, Hojlund, Rashford all that means NO Antony except in cups.
But, really not sure about central defending at all.

Yep. I remember they trialed auto-yellows for impeding restarts in some (youth?) tournament several years ago. Stand in front of a free kick after a foul? Yellow. Toe-poke the ball away before the opposing player can get it for a throw in? Yellow. Throw the ball 20 feet over your head, past the player you just fouled, as you run back into position? Yellow.

In less than one tournament everyone got the memo and stopped doing all those things. Was awesome. Couldn't believe they didn't implement that rule everywhere.

For sure. Don't forget Zirkzee!
And lets see if Sancho can become someone to count on. And I am not a fan but maybe Mount can be good too as a rotation for Bruno (who needs to sit once and awhile).

We have a new owner in a fantasy league I commish. I finally got his phone number and contacted him on Wednesday. He’s a Brit and a Birmingham soccer fan. Out of the blue, he offered me his extra ticket to Saturday’s Liverpool v Man U match, and I’ll get to meet him then.

I had no plans to go, but looks like I am.

Met Aly Wagner yesterday. Her brother plays Sunday league with us and she was in town and stopped by. My 15 year old daughter was so excited, she whispered to me "That's ALY WAGNER".

A lot of teams appear better then "Manchester United" when you have to start Lindelof, Evans, Mount and Sancho through the middle and you bring on McT and Antony as subs.
Yeah, that's what the quotes were for.

Doak, Philips, Jaros, Stephenson, van den Berg, Chambers, Nyoni, Carvahlo, Blair, Morton playing for "Liverpool" on the other side.

United looked hapless while Liverpool looked like they knew how they wanted to play even with all those scrubs in the game. Can't really put any stock into it as far as Slot goes, but it could have been worse.

Oh for sure. The score line is disappointing but how the goals happened are the issue. Casemiro getting juked out of his shorts for the 1st, AWB getting beat at the back post for the 2nd and Onana spilling the 3rd (even though it was offside on the initial pass) are all things that need to be fixed. McMount and McTominay missing sitters also doesn't help.

Having watched United in the three us games (2 in person, 1 on TV), they really missed Martinez, Bruno and Hojlund.
Their def is stronger with Martinez and their attack is more creative with Bruno.
I do like what I see out of Amad and Collyer.

Saw another snipped on the twitters this morning that Neto is the 35th Chelsea permanent signing over the past 2 years.
35 signings ago, Liverpool grabbed Firmino from Hoffenheim (2015).

Caught Copa '71 on a plane.

Worth the watch just for the info that yes, it actually happened. Crazy to watch for the info that yes, these genuinely bad soccer players somehow filled stadio azteca. But regardless, it's an amazing story that like Brandi Chastain, id also never heard of.

EXCL: Charlotte FC executive now in London start talks for ambitious move to bring Miguel Almirón back to MLS.

Initial approach already made with Newcastle, not an easy deal but Charlotte FC trying
Ream and Stengs already pretty big signings in the window. Bringing back Swiderski from loan also increases the costs.

They're a pretty thin squad sitting at 6th in the East. 2nd lowest GA and 4th lowest GF in the entire MLS. Makes sense to invest, particularly in the attack.

I imagine the angle of snagging a former Atlanta player would appeal to Tepper too.

Ream is a great signing but I doubt he cost anything in a transfer fee. I would think Fulham let him go for nothing just as a favor to a long standing player. His entire cost will be his salary if I had to guess and I am pretty sure he is not a DP. Is he a TAM designation?

Well that ends a disaster signing of a guy who should have been great in MLS

Looks like the Miggy deal fell apart late

Miguel Almiron’s proposed transfer to Charlotte FC has fallen through. Newcastle United had a verbal agreement with the MLS side, but the deal collapsed after the player and his agent demanded higher wages. In response, Charlotte lowered their offer to $9million (£7m), a figure that was deemed too low by #NUFC
Miggy loves Newcastle. There was some rumblings about him going to Saudi last year but he didn't want to go. He might be interested in MLS but he won't take a pay cut if he loves where he already is. Newcastle won't sell for a discount because they don't have depth at RW. Selling Miggy might free up funds to go get one but it's not a sure thing.

Ipswich Town doing business. Grabbed Kalvin Philips on loan and as I posted in one of the other FOURTY soccer threads who can keep up with them all, oh, elfloppo can, Szmodics is moving on a transfer.
I still think they're going to give up a ton of goals but these are two good moves. Phillips is a gamble but he's done it before - hopefully he can find his old form. Szmodics they've been working on for a while.

Switching the avatar back to Ipswich after the scum lose tomorrow...
27 Years I've been an Ipswich supporter. I gave up a bit after they hired Keane, but his failure made me feel good inside.
So many years lingering in the Championship and then dropping broke me a bit. My only Ipswich jersey has friggin' Marcus Evans plastered across the chest. Years ago you couldn't buy an Ipswich kit in the US and it was gifted from my Irish side.
I could recite Ipswich history and now I am a bit rusty. But damn I am excited.
AC Milan owes us a game in Ipswich. The only English side to never lose a Euro game on English soil. Defeating Real, Inter, Barca and a few others.(this may not be 100% accurate, but F it. I am fairly sure)

A bit conflicted in that I want Liverpool to win the league this year and then Ipswich run like 5 consecutive if they stay up.
And of course they make me wake up at 6 on Saturday for the first match of the year. Liverpool seem to struggle against newly promoted sides and a $72+ mill spend for one side and -$25m on the other.

Add on that I now have to become an Ed Sheeran fan... The world has changed.
