Thomas Müller to Vancouver Whitecaps, here we go!

Deal done for German legend to join MLS side.

Two year deal in place for Müller who won’t retire and starts new chapter in MLS as he wanted. Deal agreed as
@TomBogert and BILD reported, Müller said yes today.
I read he was definitely coming to MLS... Vancouver wouldn't have been my guessed at desitnation, no.
yes, I should have been more clear. It was the Vancouver part that caught me off guard even when the rumor surfaced a few days ago.
from my understanding up here
Vancouver wasnt his 1st choice , he decided to come here because of what is going on in the US
worked out great for us

On a day where Wednesday's manager has walked and one of their stands has been closed, ****housing from local clubs occurs

I love the ****housing as much as the next guy but it’s hard to find any humor in the awful situation that club is in and what their fans are going through.
The trouble is that 95% of the fans were cheering the owner on while they were spending way beyond their means chasing the promised land, then kept doubling down on everything afterwards after they lost the playoff final against Hull and ignored their owner being completely clueless for close to a decade now. Granted, I am clearly not an unbiased observer, but this is not a Morecambe situation where they are potentially hours from going out of business due to the owners and the entirety of the fan base want them out and to sell, with offers ready and waiting on the table to accept. Nope, they have cheered the owner on trying to live beyond their means for season after season, thinking they have a divine right to play at the highest level, and that if they are not playing at the highest level, it is only because of league rules intended to prevent the exact situation they are in now. The majority are likely still deluded enough that they think that someone will fly in and buy them out based on their perception of their stature and then everything will be fine, regardless of the assets of the club being no manager, next to no senior players, and no stadium, Chansiri having sold it to himself at an exorbitant value, which will never be recouped given half the ground is now unsafe for public use. My only sympathy is with the non-football staff who have been delayed pay at least once through no fault of their own. Everyone else? This is the definition of FAFO, and we are in the FO stage. Everyone else? I've been to Worksop Town, they have great hospitality, if you end up at that high a level, I'm sure you'll have a great day out

Its finally upon us - the article about the revolutionary world cup ball we see every four years. Next year's ball is the "Trionda" and someone at Scientific American got an advance look.

The Surprising Math and Physics behind the 2026 World Cup Soccer Ball

Maybe its time to fire up the separate thread.
we seem to be close to a stand alone thread now if you want to start one.

Las Vegas will host the 2026 World Cup draw on Dec. 5, multiple sources have told ESPN.

Sources told ESPN that Vegas is the chosen city after venues in Canada and Mexico were ruled out for the newly expanded tournament, which will be played across the United States, Canada and Mexico with 48 teams instead of 32.

Pachuca executive Pedro Cedillo, who is campaigning for Mexico to be the site for World Cup training camps, recently told ESPN he expected the draw to take place in Vegas.

Newcastle table a bid for Sesko for 90m Euros
So United tables one for 85m Euros, because that's United for you.

Now it is up to Sesko to decide which team he wants to move too. United must feel like he wants them to bid lower than Newcastle?

Is Sesko worth 85-90m?
6'5"/185 lbs striker, 22 years old,
Did have 21 goals in all competitions last season, 13 of which were league. The season before he had 18 goals in all comps, so that is encouraging.

Net spend for calendar years 2023, 2024, 2025 (so far). I didn't check this data, but I'm pretty sure it's close for LFC at least.

Chelsea ~£740 m
Manchester United ~£658 m
Arsenal ~£596 m
Tottenham ~£529 m
Liverpool ~£394 m
Manchester City ~£349 m

If you do just 2024, 2025 LFC fall to the bottom. Knew they'd spent so little last year they wouldn't be top, but I'm still surprised overall given the signings this year. And they haven't sold Nunez or Eliott yet either -- which ought to pay for a huge chunk of the Isak deal (assuming).

United isn't spending more than anyone else overall, although they have had to overpay on certain players. What they are unable to do is sell anyone for any meaningful amount. All the other teams listed are selling to offset, hence the lower "net spend"

Sancho, Antony both over pays, now can't sell.
Pogba lost on a free, bought for 100m, lost on a free.
Garnacho, Rashford... Can't get decent money for either.

Overpay/Undersell is the United way.

My thought is it was all ManU could scrape together but it's close enough and it's probably where Sesko wants to go. This window has been a disaster.

Just watched back Gravenberch's all-touch vid from the Bibao friendly yesterday. It's wild how some guys just see faster than others -- he never looks hurried no matter how much traffic he's in and can seemingly one-touch himself into space at will. Just constantly gliding past people who appear to be in pretty good defensive position. Reminds me of Thiago how he finds a turn.

This window has been a disaster.
Which is weird given ownership's deep pockets and the on-field success.
Front office has been in shambles with execs going in/out a revolving door and PSR has been a hindrance despite the deep pockets (but that's not what's going on this summer, just ineptitude.)
Deep pockets are meaningless when you can't use City's loopholes to get around PSR or FFP or any other 3 letter money acronym.

I think United is trying everything and anything to stop overpaying, or at least the perception of overpaying. So they lowball everyone and then end up paying the valuation anyway.
Sesko may choose United. Willing to be united ends up paying what Newcastle bid when all is said and done.

Son makes it official that he's leaving Spurs this summer. LAFC seems next.
He is now officially signed. He is the highest transfer fee into MLS in history.

The transfer record has been broken 3 times this season.
I was surprised by the name of the guy who he beat....hadn't heard the name.
Was is Latte Lath? He was a good goal scorer in the Championship and a well sought after player. I think he was Middlesboro's top scorer when he left. He is a bit of a late bloomer from what I can tell. He was a loan machine before settling in. He went on 8 straight loans before finding a home at Middlesboro.

He went from being a serial Serie C level loan player to getting called up to the Ivory Coast national team. Quite a leap.

Fabrizio says he chose United and negotiations between clubs are going on.

Melissa Reddy (and Isak) seems to agree with McBonkon, FWIW...

"The frustration for Alexander Isak and his camp is they feel they very clearly and respectfully informed Newcastle of the forward‘s desire to explore a fresh challenge well ahead of this summer. In doing so, it afforded the club the chance to attack the market on the front foot and secure a quality replacement long before it got to this messy point. It‘s not Isak’s fault Newcastle have had a mare, missing out on so many of their top targets. If anything, it probably hardens the belief that their approach and ambition doesn’t align with his. There is no solid recruitment foundation.

I feel sorry for Eddie Howe, the players and the supporters; Newcastle are in the Champions League for the second time in three years and secured their first domestic trophy for 70 years yet they are a structural mess off the pitch.

Many at the club point to the power struggle that ousted Ghodoussi and Staveley as the root of several issues, especially the lack of communication and human touch with the exit of the latter.

Given how this window has gone, can Newcastle actually land a replacement for Isak? If they force him to stay, can they get the maximum out of him in the absence of that human touch? If they sell him, can they be trusted to reinvest a British record sum wisely?"

That was the guy. Was probably mentioned here, and i may have even commented along the lines of "good- an up and comer instead of down and outer"... But i see a name that still doesnt register with me at all vs a relatively still got gas in the tank legend like Son and i wonder how they're mentioned in the same breath.

Is Lath pumping in goals and being a difference maker for...who does he even play for?

Atlanta.

He has not set the league on fire but has been decent. In looking him up he has 7 goals in 23 games so far. Not quite yet worth the cost obviously but first year in MLS can always be a bit wonky for many foreign players.

Oh man. Why would this person be participating at all at Son’s introductory press conference?

when the World Cup comes, we are expecting a win here in LA for the USA, we are here to support you to get that done
Well tbf, Schweinie helped the Fire win the World Cup...so it could happen for Son.
At least the Schwein debacle was from a poor press guy who not only did not follow soccer, he did not follow sports. Why he was sent to said press event was weird but the Fire had nothing to do with that.

This person at the podium and one would assume it was vetted by LAFC How could no one in the organization have made sure they understood even the basics of the sport is unacceptable. She was a City councilwoman I believe.

My guess is that maybe there are a decent amount of SK voters in her area and she was pandering but I really have no idea.

There to protect him from ICE?

Bolded haven't happened yet, but I bet the end result here is closeish...

If so, that would be a combined -200MM in net spend over the last two years. Which is funny because the fan base is acting like John Henry had his wallet stolen, but 100MM a year is just about the average for the team over the last several years.

(For entertainment purposes only -- I didn't vet all these #s and I think they may be mixing pounds/Euros here and there.)

Player Fee (£k)
Alexander Isak –130,000

I was just thinking about this as I noticed how outlets reported transfer fees.

Some in Euros, some get reported in pounds and then some in Dollars. I get they are reporting to a target audience or trying to push a narrative but damn if it doesn't confuse things.

Sesko for instance:
98.9m USD
89.1m pounds
85m Euros

The net spend numbers can be interesting but I think for many clubs the more important data is the accounting value after amortization - either for FFP or PSR which have some differences. I'm not saying cash in/out isn't also important, but if you're doing that analysis you probably have to consider other things like salary and payment terms.

I am fairly certain FFP/PSR/ETC take into account salaries and terms along with game day revenue, marketing, sponsorships.
