***Official "Space Blanket" for Better Call Saul*** (4 Viewers)

Might have to check out more of Tolan's work, then.  A man writing a woman well still impresses me.  It's why I've continued to follow Wally Lamb through some mediocre fiction after his first two, based solely on "She's Come Undone" being the first time I remembered reading a man who got it right.

A man writing a purposed woman is even more impressive.  And a multi-faceted one at that.  The temptation is just too strong for most to write her solely as mother or muse, savior or saved.
iirc, he got a gig writing for Tim Allen early on and blew it because he wrote a wifecentric ep of the tool show.

most fun i had writing specscripts for TV were the female characters - a painkiller-addicted cop who has to move in with her NamVet, Alzheimeric father to keep him out of institutions (yrs b4 i had to be a peepnurse myself); lawyer for an agoraphobic billionaire who solves crimes by proxy and, most of all, a police sergeant (and @Clown Carish mother of over a dozen foster & natural children) who was the hero of a mini-9/11 sitch at her precinct who falls apart from PTSD but cant let it show. there's just so much unexplored, cuz women dont write em significantly less cartoonishly than men do

So, you are aware that BCS is a prequel to Breaking Bad?  Just making sure.

:lmao:   I meant to comment that I admired how gracefully you took all that ribbing.  I really didn't think you were serious at first and, if I'd been in the situation, probably would have played it off as a joke.  Props to you for all of it.

Kim is the Omar of this show.  Has a code; lives by that code.
agree and disagree

Kim wants to have a code - human beings are so thoroughly disappointing that it would be just wrong not to have proof of being better'n'em - but her inner imprimatur causes her to edit up everything so she wont be unfair, so she really cant. my life has pretty much been based on offering exile to such women - because they're challenging, liquid & fun and they wont be helped so i'm quickly off the hook - but i worry how badly theyre stuck in the purgatory of their higher cares. and, going to your earlier point...

Oh, I agree with this.  Everyone writes men better, because it's all they were taught.
...they are difficult & perverse to write, with little traditional reward.

Good seeing Lalo doing his Most Interesting Man in The World/Bond thing in Europe.   I didn't give much weight to the theory earlier but glad it came to fruition.

What theory?

I don’t understand— if they knew enough about the wife that they could find her at some bar, they had to know where she lived too. Why the ruse?

I posted earlier when folks were wondering what Lalo was up to.  One was he was in Europe investing Ziegler.

Couldn't help but notice in the previews for next week, it appears someone is handed a business card for vacuum cleaner repair

Got it.

I forget what the deal was with Lalo and the construction of the lab.

But my other point/question wasn’t related to the theory — why does Lalo know where the wife drinks, but not where she lives?  Or was he just hoping to not have to break in and that she would invite him inside?

that was my assumption....as for the construction lab, I remember him casing the joint and calling Werner at some point.  He's been trying to figure out Werner's connection to Gus.

Underwhelming episode.
Agreed. I think the show has become something to sell as many commercials as possible at this point. Last night's episode was three times as long as it needed to be. The whole Lalo-wife scenes were a complete waste. Did we really need to sit and watch him come back in the morning and talk to the dog and look around, only to sneak back out without being seen? WHAT WAS THE POINT? There was no drama, no tension. Just totally empty scenes.

The “payoff” when lalo found the ruler, that was in the opening montage, was      I hope there’s more to it.

Seemed pretty clear to me he wanted to find out what she knew to get any clues he could.

Like any good conman, he's doing the legwork to lay the foundation. He presumably needed to know if Werner had any plans he kept, and wether they were at home or in the office.

Underwhelming episode.

Yes, definitely a filler/"set the table" episode where all the moving parts had to be placed in the needed positions for the push through the rest of the half-season. Things aligned but nothing substantive really happened.

Kim's exit storyline, i hope. Would love to see her not die.

product placement at its finest, the CRT monitor's in the house with the huge Dell logo on them. top notch placement.

more tidbitd from the episode, so far the least interesting yet imo.

  • Introduction of Saul's secretary in BB. Did we see her before in BCS? Was she the assitant when Kim and Jimmy had the office in season 2? If so i didn't recognize her back then as the same secretary in BB.
  • What's with the scene where Gus plants his gun in the future-lab? I assume the scene at the chicken restaurant is just showing his ocd tendency and his uneasiness with Lalo coming for him at some point, but I don't understand this particular scene.
  • I assume that ruler in the opening scene, the same one Lalo sees in the house, was sent by Ziegler. So what's the story there, Lalo saw the shop that made it in the states and now he's gonna go torture that store owner for info? I mean, what info could a keepsake maker have on the project? Maybe those Germans whom Ziegler met at the bar when they had a day out will come back into the story. Also, following my own logic, when did Ziegler have time to have that made? I thought they were locked down like a prison. This storyline is so far weak, it was better when I thought he was going after Nacho. Of course I'm assuming this is the storyline at all.
  • Same with the Howard storyline. I assume this is technically going as planned, which is implied when Kim says to Jimmy "you know what's coming next." But so far, weak.
I wonder if we'll have all kinds of fire burning at the half way mark that get unwound in the second half, or if this thing will keep ramping up to the end with the last two or so episodes cleaning up the stories. I hope the former because the latter would mean more of these filler episodes.

Yes this is the secretary that worked at Wexler/McGill when Jimmy and Kim shared an office. She fetched a lot of coffee for the geriatrics in the lobby. Kim wasn't impressed with her but Jimmy "had a feeling" and hired her right in the interview. She does continue into Breaking Bad. We last see her (chronologically) when Saul is about to leave for the vacuum cleaner's... she's with him when he's pulling rolls of money from the hiding spot in the drywall and packing, she's busy shredding every piece of paper at the office. Saul tips her about 20 grand to throw away the shreddings in different dumpsters on her way out.

Theory is that the German inscription "With Love, from Your Boys" means the ruler is a memento from the crew to Werner. A thank you or memorial for their beloved boss. "Your Boys" is Deine Jungs, Werner had previously referred to them as seine jungs, "my boys". Anyway, the going assumption is that Lalo will find out who made the epoxy memento from the sticker at the bottom, and track down the Boys who placed the order, and get whatever info about the construction from them.

Lalo knows where the laundry is, he tailed someone to the location previously. He knows Fring was involved in some kind of construction project from his phone call with Werner at the spa. He knows there's drilling and a large wall being poured. He's already close to figuring out what the deal was but hasn't put two and two together yet that it's under the laundry. Fring had previously lured Lalo and Don Eladio's right-hand-man to the chicken factory to show off his construction, trying to convince them that that was the project, but Lalo never bought that story.

Yeah I'm going to cut him some slack on this one since Bob odenkirk had a heart attack in the middle of filming

I think we are all cutting them slack for this... however, that has nothing to do with AMC's decision to split the season with a break in the middle.  The episodes are done, they are choosing to air them this way.

Production literally stopped when Bob almost died. Releasing them this way allows them to get some episodes on timely while being able to finish the others. I don’t really see it as a big deal.

I don't care that much either (and completely understand why the season was delayed, and am glad they were even able to finish).  However, the split season seems to me to be more of a ratings ploy, like AMC likes to do with their other shows, maybe I'm completely mistaken there.  They finished filming in February, not sure how long it takes to cut everything, but I'd think they are done with all the episodes by now.

Howard beating the crap out of Jimmy was pretty fun.

The Lalo/wife stuff is getting close to jumping the shark
I thought the boxing ring was worse.  Trying too hard there.  Just have Howard meet him and they argue and it gets a little physical.  That would have accomplished the same thing and a lot more believable.

  • yes
  • he counted the number of paces from the electrical chord to the gun.  he's going to cut the lights and find his gun taking someone, presumably Lalo, by surprise
  • trail back to the US to someone who knows what happened
  • yep, Howard figuring it out is part of their plan, and him saying  Howard even said, "you didn't even bother to cover your tracks"

The boxing ring is just building for another episode. It's making Howard believe he finally got one over on Jimmy, but really he's the one about to get figuratively knocked out.

For the scene with the wife, I feel like they are trying to contrast Lalo who is charming + charismatic + ruthless vs. Gus who is OCD + robotic + ruthless. In this villain vs villain game, both are calculating, formidable, worthy opponents to each other.

I remember Breaking Bad having quite a few of these episodes so I'm not too concerned.  I liked the Lalo trip but could've done without the boxing ring schtick.

I'm also enjoying seeing Gus so shook over the Lalo situation.   It's a side we rarely got to see in BB as he always seemed so calm and collected.  He reminds me of Walt sometimes.

I 100% get it, I just think it was dumb.

Who is Ziegler and who was the woman Lalo met in the bar? And what was that that Lalo stole from the house?

Why not just keep the gun on his ankle, cut the lights, reach down to his ankle for the gun and shoot Lalo?
