Anyone get assigned that quest for the merchants?
I got it. I didnt' complete it and I'm thinking I'm going to start over. I wasted a major skill on speechcraft and it's just too easy to raise with the little pie game.I also didn't take security, figuring my alteration skill would cover me with unlock spells but I haven't gotten any yet.

On the other hand, I don't want to start over and I'm not convinced my setup isn't bad.

I'm currently:

Dark Elf/Thief sign/Custom Class with magic specialization and Strength/Willpower attributes

Major Skills are:

Destruction, Alteration, Restoration, Speechcraft, Sneak, Light Armor, Blades

Beginning Attribute/skill set was:

Intelligence: 40 Willpower: 35 Personality: 30 Agility: 50 Speed: 60 Strength: 45 Endurance: 40 Luck: 60

Alchemy:10

Mysticism: 15

Conjuration: 10

Destruction:40

Alteration:30

Restoration: 30

Illusion: 10

Mercantile:5

Speechcraft: 25

Security: 5

Sneak: 25

Marksman: 10

Athletics:10

Acrobatics:5

Light Armor: 30

Blunt:10

Blade: 35

Hand to Hand: 5

Armorer:5

Heavy Armor: 5

So on the way from the sewers to the priory where I found Jauffre, was I supposed to do anything? I did fight some bandits at a campsite and went into a cave to fight some more, but ultimately I just high taield it to Jauffre. Now I'm off in search of the emporer's lost son. Should I be doing other things prior to this, I don't want to get father in the story than I am strong enough for.

I'm a level 2 scout.
That's the beauty of the Elder Scroll games. Do it however you want to do it. Follow the story, ignore the story - it's all up to you. Your skillset will keep you from advancing farther down the storyline then you are capable of.

Damn, why am I not advancing? :hot: I would imagine it has to do with the fact that the skills for my character were already quite high due to racial bonuses, so they will progress more slowly.

This game is the ultimate sandbox. You can choose to ignore the main quest and become a merchant, for instance. I am doing a few side quests before I jump into the main one. And just plain explore. If this is anything like previous games, there are HUNDREDS of dungeons.

Shawn - are you my neighbor? He works at home and is always just dorking around on the computer Doug, is that you?

I wish I had stayed with Dark Elf instead of Wood elf right now, but that is OK. I was driving to work this AM questioning myself if I really wanted to stay with this character or start over with a tank. :nerd: moment for ya.

Your major skills have to advance a certain amount. Also, the skills that advanced the most will result in the biggest potential attribute bonus. I snuck around a lot on level 1 so got a 5 pt Agility bonus but my other attributes only offered me options from 2-3 pts.

Yeah, I know. 10 pts = advancement. I am sneaking every where, so should be good for a +5 bonus at least. It should be very soon. I think my problem is that I did not choose acrobatics or athletics. I run and jump everywhere and those are going up in a hurry.ANyone know how to go about raising alchemy? I read on one of the transition screens that sampling stuff you harvest helps, but beyond that, I want to know how to use my pestle and make poisons and potions.

Here's another nugget for those new to these games - if you are too good and take down the baddies before ever getting hit, your armor skills will go nowhere. If you run into a mud crab or something weak, let it attack you a few times before you dispatch it. That way, you gain skill in armor, and that helps a ton with less encumbrance with your own armor.

A fun little Radiant AI moment today - I witnessed an NPC sneaking up to another one and try to pickpocket it, only to be caught and run off.

Don't hate the playa, hate the game. Just cuz I can work at home and get 50 hours of work done in about 25 hours, don't be mad Twan. It's all the nature of my job. I spend much of my time waiting for a certain task to complete.

Also, in all fairness, I'm working out of my rec room this week because my youngest is sick. So the Gaming PC is a 2 second chair roll away. Ordinarily, it's two floors away so the only time I ever game during the workday is on lunch and that's very rare.

Just choose the mortar and pestle from the inventory menu and add like ingredietns to make crappy potions. Your skill will rise from that.

Sweet. If I remember correctly, you can usually find a ton of recipes online, no?Oh, and if anyone is interested in a fun alchemy quest, go to the waterfront and search around the water behind the buildings for a purple flower - it has been very entertaining so far.

I havent' advanced far enough but they simplified "recipes" a ton. Every component has a bunch of traits (only you can't access them all until your skill is high). By combining two items with like traits you make a potion that does what that trait is. Then there are other ingredietns which boost the strength of the potion when added in. Much simpler than the old best guess method.

I did notice that once I was a wood elf and had alchemy as a major, I automatically get the first 2 of the 4 traits. I think if you eat a bunch of the stuff, it also gives you more points to advance alchemy.

I love the new interface for affecting people's disposition towards you. Cool.

I can't quite get the hang of the lock picking though.

I was having problems, but having read a few threads over at elderscrolls.com, I think I have a better idea of how to do it. I will report back if I am better at it.

Anyone get assigned that quest for the merchants?
I got it. I didnt' complete it and I'm thinking I'm going to start over. I wasted a major skill on speechcraft and it's just too easy to raise with the little pie game.
How does that pie game work? I didn't really understand it when I breezed through it in the tutorial.

You have to take all 4 options in a round. 1 will give a big +, 1 will give a little +, 1 will give a big -, and 1 will give a little -. Ideally, you want to "pick" each one when you have full pie pieces on the ones that give + and small pie pieces on the ones that give -. You can tell which will give what by watching the npcs facial reactions as you move around the 4 options. Which ones give + and - will stay the same in each round for the same npc.

Yeah, and if you have a high speechcraft, then you can also spin it once without having to make a choice. I am slowly getting very good at this.I am still in Slingrad or whatever the name is doing the paranoia quest, after which I need to return to the capital and do some stuff.

Anyone tried anything in the Arena?

OMFG this game is incredible. And, yes, MadCow, I was up til almost 9am this morning playing. Good thing I just now have to start work ;)

I'll give more info later about my character, but when I installed the game, it auto-detected my hardware and set it for "Ultra High" settings and Holy Good God!?!?!?!

I'm playing at 1920 x 1200 on my 24" Widescreen/Flatscreen Sony Trinitron, and, well, let's just say I have the next month or two of my life spoken for now. Just wow.

Those goblins and rats are, dare I say, scary? :sheepish:

I'll post more later. Just wanted to throw in my "wow" here.

Also, folks, favorite and least favorite part of the game? I'll need another couple of days to give an informed opinion on mine...but so far, the rag-doll physics coupled with the graphics are my fav thing thus far. This game is just simply incredible!

Is your mom code word for a 16 year old kid down the street trying to screw you over? Seriously, Zippy, that CPU is messed up. We need to add 512 RAM, a better video card and a new CPU. I think I CAN do that for $500.

What is your video card?

I for one am looking forward to putting this on my home machine tonight. The only problem is that it is my understanding you cannot run HDR and AA at the same time.

So, do you take 6X AA and Bloom, or max res, no AA and HDR? Anyone else forced to make this choice?

You do -we need to add another 512 to get you up to a gig. You want me to get you all three for under $500? I can price it on Newegg for you.

I am running a 7800GT video card (again, I splurged a lil buiding my rig last Dec.) and OMG. Yes it's true. Either HDR or AA. I chose HDR and am really impressed how gorgeous this game is. No lag whatsoever even with it at 1920 x 1200 resolution. I see no reason to change it....-fe

Ah, good call. Please do. What you running in your system? I'd appreciate the screens.Stuck at work for the next 6 hours  , but while I'm here, another question.

Before I got caught stealing from one of the shop keepers, I was rummaging thru his stuff and found things like parchment, a quill, etc etc. These things are not "useful", just stuff that you can sell, am I right?

Yes, and they are very rarely worth anything at all.Edit to say the system will be an AMD 64 3700+ overclocked to 2.935 GHz, 2 gig G.Skill RAM and an ATI X1900XT overclocked to surpass XTX levels.

In Morrowind, the bonus was based on how many skills you gained in an atttribute before advancing. Basically, it was like this:0-1: Attribute goes up 1

2-4: +2

5-7: +3

8-9: +4

10+: +5

I would always make sure that whatever attribute I wanted to bump next level up, I would advance skills with that as the main attribute at least 10 times. That way I always got the full 5 points.

Any idea about all the doors that "cannot be picked, you need a key" in the main dungeon?

Where do i get this "key"?
What "main dungeon"? There are craploads of dungeons.

I just set it up in 1280X1024 with HDR and holy crap, that is the purtiest game I ever saw. I was just screwing around and killing townspeople and sheep, and it was [seinfeld]BREATHTAKING[/seinfeld]
