***OFFICIAL***The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion thread (1 Viewer)

How the heck do you ever progress in this game?  I have been in Skingrad forever doing quests and crap.  I have not even sniffed the main quest and am almost level 4 now.
I'm deep into the main quest.First, I had to go see Jauffre in the Weynon Priory.

Then you go to see Martin Svatch.

Then you have a ##### of a time because you have to travel through the oblivion gate. All one on one combat there so you can shoot and run if want.

I'm 3 or 4 steps beyond that now, fighting the Mythic Dawn cult.
How did you open the gate at the bridge in Oblivian. I went in there and me and the guy who was left in there killed everything off, but the gate says "Gate is opened elsewhere" :wall:

I just got this game Sunday.... good god I'm addicted. Played 4 hours non-stop yesterday and just HAD to stop playing, but easily could've kept going. So far I'm loving it... graphics are aboslutely beautiful.

The only question I have so far - is, is there ANYPLACE I can buy lockpicks? I'm playing as a "tank" (everyone else here seems to be going as thief / elf of some sort...). Aside from that i'm doing pretty well, have done a couple of side quests, I think i'm going to go the same route as Mad Cow and level up some before jumping into the main quest.

There are a few places to buy lockpicks, such as fences in the thieves guild, but the best way is to kill bandits. They almost always have a few on them.

In Morrowind, I believe I was well in to the level 20 region before I even began to think about the main quest! That's what's great about this game.
Oh I know how to progress and such. My point was there is so much, there is not a big impetus to actually follow the main quest line since there are so many other lines to follow.

I'm a tank too.

You have to go back to where you came in and go left. It's a long journey especially because you have to duck and weave to close in on the bad guys while they shoot fireballs at you. You end up behind the gate.

Hmm, I went left but it looked like it dead ended. I'll have to go back and check.

Quick request for folks in this thread. If you are going to talk about specific quests/plots, can you please put a little ***Spoiler*** tag or something at the top of your post? I really don't want to stumble on quest specific posts. I'd like to discover those things on my own. TIA!

As for tanks, they are great characters, especially if you are new to the ES world. But at least in Morrowind, I found a tank to be way to simple to dominate the game with. Oblivion may have fixed this, but I didn't want to risk it. Besides, I like being a bad-###, fireball wielding bow sniper! That 3x damage as a nOOb has netted me a bunch of one shot kills already, and at pretty good distances!

And Mad Cow, agree with lack of impetus for the main quest. That's what I love! I like to go mine and dungeon spelunking, just grabbing items and such and I really enjoy knocking out side quests and guild assignments. Main story be damned!

I have found that a 3xsneak with bow followed by a mini fireball kills zombies dead.

Well, I finally got it up and running... on an old GeForce FX5200  I feel like I'm playing the original Doom graphically but the gameplay is still there.

I'm playing pretty much a straight mage High Elf with the sign of The Apprentice. I bought a couple of summoning spells - I use zombie most - and a decent fireball spell (20 damage, I think). The combo seems to work pretty well thus far. I'm running around Chorral; completed the Mage Guild quest there and am looking for other stuff to do in town. I love exploring the wilderness and stumbling upon the different ruins, caves and temples.

Lockpick is a PITA and I'm still not sure I understand the persuasion thing.

Anyone create a spell yet?

I don't understand persuasion at all either :(

It doesn't dead end, but you may be dead by the time you get to the end. Oh, I crack myself up.

OK, here's the dealio with persuasion. I have gotten pretty good at it, but it requires a little luck. There are 4 pies. Each causes one of 1 reactions with a person. Figure you can rank them 1 to 4 based on how well they like that pie section. 1 being hate, 2 dislike, 3 OK and 4 awesome.

You HAVE to choose all 4 in each minigame. The goal is to minimize the amount you will with 1 and 2 and maximize that of 3 and 4. Now keep in mind that the wheel rotates each time you choose, as well. I don't know if this is random, or not - never looked a whole lot, but regardless, it changes. Keeping that in mind, you want to take the lowest hate(1) and the highest awesome (4) as soon as you can. The 2 middle options don't have nearly as much sway as the 2 extremes, so consider those the flex options and take them with whatever you get. If you start the game with the lowest on hate, I always opt for that one, then proceed. If not and the highest one is on love (4), then choose that one. It is a game of give and take and luck to a large degree. Once you understand that, it is very easy.

I have completed 1 of the letters of recommendation to get into the Arcane University. A few more to go. I still want to join the theives guild (got the info to do it) and the Dark Brotherhood.

Debate this statement:

Playing a tank removes you from most of the intruiging stuff in the game, such as alchemy, spellcrafting, et al.

Perhaps, but not necessarily. Yes, you would have to invest in more combat stuff, but you could also say that playing with magic removes you from some of the sweeter equipment in the game. It is a big toss-up and I think each way will give you a great experience. I have never been one to play the mage in TES games, but the way some of these spells look, I might try it out. I am currently trying to raise my magicka so I can gain access to some pretty awesome destruction spells.

I got absolutely OWNED by a pair of necromancers in one of the dungeons last night... at higher levels some of those summon spells must be ridiculous.

Persuasion, got that down. Practiced it this weekend quite a bit in the starting town. Basically when you hit start, a round consist of clicking all 4 options. Two options will be positive, two negative for every individual. What you need to do the first time you hit start is quickly place the cursor over each quadrant and look at the characters expression. One is a big smile, one is a slight smile, one a slight frown, and one a big frown. The smiles are positive and will increase your rep, the two frowns are negative (obviously). So, what you want to do is click the positives while they are as full as possible and the negatives while they are empty as possible. As your speechcraft skill goes up, you will gain the ability to freely rotate the wheel once per round, which can help immensely. Oh, once you discover the two positives and the two negatives, they don't change. So it becomes a quick process, which is good as your rep drops if you sit there thinking. The faster you can click through the four options, the better.

Edit: Wow, way to slow posting this one. :P

Cow - Why didn't you get the free horse from the Priory? He's been working out just fine for me.

I haven't been playing as much as I would like because of girlfriend-type duties, basketball, etc.

So far, I've joined the Thieves Guild, gotten the mage guild recommendation in Chorral, done both sides of the Fingers of the Mountain quest to get the sweet spell (will spoiler if someone wants to know details), advanced to blood letter in the arena, visited Jauffree, defended the farm from the goblins and cleared out a fortfilled with Goblins and a fort filled with some bad ### marauder types and a cave with some conjurers (major, major pain in the ###).

I've got open-ended quests for finding the Chorral ruler's twin, doing the Gray Prince quest, doing the alchemy nimbus root quest and going to find Martin for the main quest.

I'm trying to play a pretty balanced character so don't have any sweet, sweet spells yet but they're coming.

I had the free horse. Unfortunately I was attacked by a barbarian while riding it. The guy started hacking at my horse and I closed in to try and kill him. I inadvertantly hit the horse when I was swinging at him and the damn horse started attacking me.

GDB trying to out run my enraged horse.

Yeah, I wondered about playing both sides, but I figured I'd stick with the guild in an effort to be a good guy. Is the sweet spell worth taking a mulligan?

*****SPOILER*******You can do both. Return the book to the mages guild then go talk to Eleanna again. She will yell at you and tell you to go steal it back. Take the book back from them (piece of cake if you're a guild member) and give it to her. The spell is a multiple opponent shock spell. Pretty damn useful.

***End Spoiler***

Please tell me you got a screenshot of this. It could make you famous.

I got this yesterday evening, and I think I'll be spending the next two weeks just creating characters and moving them out of the sewers (as far as I got last night) before I even start doing any quests or exploring. This is pretty darn cool.

Anyone know how to get enchanted weapons recharged?
Use a filled soul gem on them. You fill the empty soul gems using a spell then use the gem which will bring up the magic items.***MINOR SPOILER***

There was a person in the Mage Guild in Chorral (IIRC) who offered to recharge magic items as well.

You can use a blue stone to recharge, as well. Can't remember the name. There are a bunch in the dungeon across the lake from the sewers.

What dungeon, do you remember? I owned a couple in one called Elenglynn today. Tried a cross country journey on horse and ran into a bunch of cool stuff.

Has anyone become an Arena Grand Champion yet?

I did so, and now I have this young elf following me around. Anyone know if hes important at all?

Brokeback elf?

Have any of you tried the forums over at elderscrolls.com? Holy crap are they SLOOOOOOW and are getting blitzed hard. I have seen a thread drop from page 1 to page 2 in less than a minute.

Is anyone in the fighter's guild? I"m in Chorral, and I CANNOT find the guy i'm supposed to go to get contracts from... driving me friggin' insane! I want to try and advance there then hit up the Arena.

Sorry I was too busy running for my life to press the Print Scrn button. Damn horse followed me for miles. :bag:

Just on another note, does anyone find lockpicking to be ridiculously easy?

Ive only got a 30 or so in security but can pop a "Very Hard" lock with 1 lockpick.

With all the issues I am having I browsed their tech section quite a bit and it's exactly as you describe. Several times I got SQL errors or the site has just been down. Otherwise, the load times make you feel like you're on 56k.This thread is a way better conduit for information, IMO.

Do you know the guy's name? Also, it's simple but have you looked for him during the daytime?

I'm in the fighter's guild, but I signed up in Avril and the guy was always in the lobby of the fighter's guild.

If you are patient, it is easy. That said, I have broken many picks because I got impatient, too. :bag:

Not for me, I always just quicksave before a lockpick, and just "autopick", if i break more than 3 I just quickload :bag:

I've been having a hard time. I can do two pretty easy but I keep f'n up the third spring.
