***OFFICIAL***The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion thread (1 Viewer)

I have 2 subscriptions that stay in my crapper - Computer Gaming World and Computer Games.
CGW subscriber for I don't know how long! Good gaming rag. How is Computer Games? Don't know I've ever even seen it.
Meh, but it reviews games.

I wish I could find some decent weapons. I'm using a fine iron longsword and an iron shield. The 1 extra point of damage from fine iron to regular steel wasn't worth the encumberance difference. I've found a grand total of one silver arrow. Everything else has been steel or iron.

Not being able to pillage in the arena is bull####. :hot:
Get out and adventure. I have found about 10 different silver weapons in various dungeons. Of course, I had to sell them all. :wall: because my pansy wood elf is a wussy and cannot carry very much, but that is besides the point. It is out there, as well as good armor. I have armor valued at over 3000 for the 2 pieces (helmet and cuirass) and steel bow with steel arrows. Hoping for elven armor someday. :excited:
I've been out and about, but I didn't realize you didn't level until you slept in a bed. So I went from level 1 to level 5 so I have a feeling I'm going to get pVVnd as soon as I go into the next dungeon.
That also explains your crappy equipment. Monsters and loot spawn according to your level. My complaint is that I've found tons of great heavy armor (magic shields, dwarven equipment) and I'm light armor. I've also found a few magic swords but I'm a blunt/axe guy.
I can point you in the direction of some very good might armor and blunt weapons all on one bandit boss to boot.

You can use a blue stone to recharge, as well. Can't remember the name. There are a bunch in the dungeon across the lake from the sewers.
Crap. I now have a magic sword with no charge and I already did that dungeon and didn't pick up any stones. I have the ones that recharge your mana but that's it. I think I finally got a soul trap scroll though. I need to effectively kill something. I got one shot at it.
How does all that soul trapping with soul stones work? I have a bunch of very nice soul stones.I am level 5 now, too. I boosted it a lot with alchemy, so am hoping for an intelligence boost here.

Nothing like going up against a ghost with iron weapons. Luckily I had a fire scroll or I would have been in some serious ####.
GDB my crappy inferno/whatever the hell it is spell :D ran into that same thing.

Going to get my copy tonight. Haven't read this thread since about page 3, so I could avoid any spoilers...but I am psyched!
Here's a spoiler for ya - your life is about to be sucked dry of 40-50 hours over the coming weeks.

Having destruction pVVns the ghosts, baby.

I know it's probably a vicious cycle/catch 22 type thing, but given PC game return policies, I am NOT paying $50 for something that I MIGHT enjoy playing.
Magazine and Online reviews down? Seriously, you may be honest in what you say. But I hear this "argument" all the time from folks that pirate software and raise the price of gaming for everyone. There are enough reviews out there that go in to detail that I find it hard to believe you can't find out exactly what you're buying beforehand.
:goodposting: I have 2 subscriptions that stay in my crapper - Computer Gaming World and Computer Games. By the time a game comes out, you have a good idea if you want it or not. And even still, I have wasted money.

Another good alternative is try the gametz.com - Game trading zone. I have gotten a lot of games by trading my older PC games that I would not have gotten otherwise. Some are great, others I am glad I traded for. I have a stack of games I have traded for that who knows if I will ever play - Chronicles of Riddick, Bros in Arms: Earned in Blood, Nexus Project, KOTOR 2: Sith Lords, etc.
Whatever. I demo games instead and review them myself. I pay for anything I keep. Just in the past 60 days I've bought Oblivion, Empire at War, and Battlefield 2 + Special Forces. I have tried and NOT bought Galactic Civilizations and Age of Empires 3.

My only point there was I have bought games that were less satisfying, but if I had waited for the reviews instead of the previews, I would have prevented that.

Sure, you've probably also bought game highly rated that you didn't really like? I have. Point is, I could either:Set my newzbin to download the game over night, install it in the morning, play it for a day or two and see if I like it. Then go buy it if I do, or uninstall and delete it.

Or

Buy a magazine or two, as well as invest some time reading reviews on websites, so I can get someone else's opinions of the game and then buy it, from somewhere I cannot return it to if on the odd chance I don't like it.

I just don't get why option 1 is evil and option 2 seems so reasonable.

Just completed another quest in Chorrol helping the sons and the reward is a VERY nice magical short sword to go with my Frost Bow that I just got in a dungeon, along with some thief boots that help sneak and agility/speed.

MC, I've always appreciated your input. I'm dying to play this game, and wondered if you think upgrading the RAM (to whatever the limit is) and getting a new video card would be enough to overcome the sorry CPU speed. I hate to get a whole new system just for one game (although it certainly wouldn't be the 1st time :) )

First of all, what's the deal with you and Gator Shawn having the same avatar? I saw it and I was asking myself why GS was asking me that question. Yes, if you can upgrade RAM to 1 or better 2GB, then get a great video card, you should be in business. I would recommend a good upgrade to the video card though, which might run $200 or so. You need an AGP video card. Seek through this thread for other AGP video card recommendations.

Thanks, guy. I'm claiming dibs on the avatar, although I can't prove it.

Wasn't there a site that could tell you what kind of RAM you have? I don't know of another way to tell.

Would that 850 video card you recommended from Newegg make it happen? I saw it for $169.

Thanks again.

That priced x850XT is PCI-express only. You are gonna need an AGP card, which will cost more per performance due to it being older tech.Download CPU-Z and post the results on your CPU, mobo, RAM, etc here and I can interpret for you. THe main thing is to go to the SPD tab and see how many slots it lets you select from, which tells us how many you have on the mobo.

It's too damn confusing having both of you in this thread. Either one of you switch or we need to set up a Thunderdome-style deathmatch to see who gets to keep it.

Just read on another forum that the Fighter's Guild has Marksmen trainers...figures. Here I am in the TG, DB, and Arena and level 7 and just now find this out....more to do though right?

I take it my 1.60 Pentium M and 512 MB ram has no chance of playing this game...
Are you trying to give MC a coronary or something?
lolActually, it depends on the video card you have, but that 512 RAM will hold you back a little. The CPU should be OK.

Well then, I will be joining them tomorrow. Tonight is Scrubs, Scrubs, Amazing Race, beg to get some and pray.

So all we need is either 1 2X512 RAM kit for 1GB or 1 2X1 kit for 2GB and an AGP video card. You could do it well for $200-$300, maybe more if you want to make it a little nicer.

How do I determine that my RAM is running at the proper speed and that dual channel is working?

I'm looking at the output from that applet MC provided. It shows my Ram speed as 200MHZ. I figure there is probably a multiplier somewhere, but didn't see a 2x anywhere.

If you look at the info, it tells you all you need and indicates dual-channel, etc. 200MHz is DDR400, or PC3200, so it is running at full speed. That CPU-Z is very useful for overclocking, since it tells you where the RAM and FSB are at at all times. It should say in the RAM as you look at each slot if it is in dual channel, I believe.

I need a tutorial on stealing.

I assume that if you steal, you should be stealing from a sneak with the icon showing that you are hidden. Then what? Does it just do a roll based on your sneak skill or agility or something?

I'm a Khajit thief type and I can't steal ####. I'm just missing some details. Trying to get into the thieve's guild but I'm wasting my life away in prison because I can't get anything to sell Ongar.

Found this on a ES Oblivion forum elsewhere, pretty cool stuff.

By the way if you have a digital camera, some free time, and an urge to make your character look like yourself, go here:

http://www.facegen.com/

Download the demo software and get to work . It needs a front and profile pic to work, but it generates a 3D head. The cool thing about it is that since this is the company that made the face gen in Oblivion, the sliders match up with the ones in this program! You won't get a perfect match due to the skins in-game, but you CAN get a close head model

Played for many hours last night. I am got up to a level two and I delivered the amulet to that shlub. Now on horseback to go find the king's ******* child. Very cool so far.

I just made level 11 with my wizard. My technique right now is to use a summoned zombie as a meatshield and hit the target with either a flashbolt or a fireball. It looks like there are some better Journeyman destruction spells out there that would be more effective than the fire-based ones.

Anyone else going the caster route?

I'm only about halfway through the Mage Guild quests but I've spent a good amount of time just exploring on foot and clearing out dungeons. So far the worst dungeon I've encountered is a cave full of vampires. The above technique has served me well though. I almost got pwned by a will o' wisp but was able to flee -- that thing either had a ton of HPs or some serious magic resistance.

Speaking of which... how often have you died? I have only died once with this guy on the default difficulty level -- IIRC it was a troll that got me. I don't get hit much, but I'm curious as to how typical this is.

Level 5 ranger-assassin and I have died once - in a trap that was like a sweeping gate of spikey death. :bag:

Dude, I don't look into mirrors for a reason. No way I want to look at my ugly mug in a game. :bag: :bag:

This game is pretty fun and it seems pretty easy to lvl up... I'm up two and I've only been out of the sewer about a 30 minutes real time. Sniping with arrows from afar is a blast.

Do you have to pickpocket, or just steal? It is easy to steal. Go into a shop or church or castle, make sure no one is around, and grab it. The hand will be red when you take something that will count as stolen. Now, if you have to pickpocket, that is skill-based. I have over 50 sneak and can only successfully pickpocket 25% of the time if that.

Of course, you COULD use this to make a character of someone else. I can imagine FBG's would enjoy playing Jenna Jameson in a game.

MC, can you reccommend a game for those who don't have the fancy, schmancy computer setups (particulary of the D&D genre)? I have a fairly new system, about a year old, but I'm guessing that a game like this is out of my league since I just run onboard video.

Out of those two, I would recommend Bejeweled.

Yeah, my WIFE enjoys playing Bejeweled at night.

On a serious note, onboard video MIGHT run Baldur's Gate 2. It is an older game but very nice. I have it to sell if you want it.

On that note, can you reccomend a fairly cheap video card to play some of the newer games? Budget's tight for that kind of stuff, so stress the 'fairly cheap' part.... ;)

I'll sell you my video card GB, that will let me buy a new one. 9600 Pro will run all but the very latest games fine. I'm running Oblivion at the lowest settings but it's working fine.

I4 must be the geekiest fantasy league in the world. ;) Gringo must cringe everytime he sees one of these posts.Anyway, drop me a PM with a price.....

On a serious note, onboard video MIGHT run Baldur's Gate 2.  It is an older game but very nice.  I have it to sell if you want it.
