Wife cried, I yawned. Has nothing to do with being triggered. These characters meant nothing to me since I am not familiar with the game one iota. I don’t know, maybe there was some point putting me through 1.5 hours in Ep3 getting so deep in the weeds on characters who are dead going forward. I guess we’ll see.

Security freak getting shot needlessly exposing himself in the middle of the street - only to be dragged inside and reassure Frank moments later not to worry because the traps will get invaders was bizarre. Seemed completely contrary to the survivalist character they’d established. That guy doesn’t survive 20 minutes of apocalypse, much less 20 years. Oh well, at least it was action of some sort.

I enjoyed the episode but was not expecting that episode at all. Was any of that particular love story in the video game? Can't imagine it would be.

It was a minor subplot to them looking for the battery

I agreed 100%. I waited until yesterday and to watch it and pretty much kept jumping forward through the episode. I do the same thing when it is a male/female love scene in a show that I'm not watching live. Uh... I'm not in my teens anymore, I really don't give a crap that you are about to get it on... Can we just get back to the story?

These characters meant nothing to the game either. So for whatever reason, the director decided to create a love story and dedicate an entire episode to it when in the game Frank is already dead and briefly mentioned and Bill appears for like 10 minutes. I would've been just as bored if it was a male/female love story. It was well directed, well acted, and well scored (i loved the Arrival music) but it didn't fit the story at all and the gay thing was shoved in for no reason whatsoever.

It was a really well done love story just felt forced and irrelevant to main story. I'm also tired of Hollywood shoving a gay character in everything now. They make it seem like 50% of the population is gay. I'm not homophobic I swear.

You seem it. It didn’t feel forced to me at all. Frankly came out of nowhere to me but it was such a heartwarming story that I soon forgot they were two men. I can see how the gamer group would be triggered given the characters low importance to the game itself. But I think you need to take a step back and realize this is a tv show and the show would fizzle out if it were simply point to point. It’ll be atleast three seasons, an hour of great tv isn’t going to sink it and in fact made it a lot more human imo.

I dont know if you played the game. There are TONS of emotional moments coming up (and we already had 2 in the first two episodes) that it felt forced to me. I'm not asking for it to be point to point. I think the writers are doing a phenomenal job. This felt forced. Thats all.

I think this could have been much easier to pull off from a story telling standpoint.

That is dark as hell.

That description makes it sound darker than it really is. In the game, Bill and Frank are basically frenemies. There's a strong comic relief element to this segment of the game. When we realize that they have a romantic relationship on top of everything else, it comes across with "old married couple" vibes, which is funny under the circumstances.

But that storyline doesn't win you an Emmy these days, so here we are.

hmm, well i am surprised about all the comments about this episode. maybe i had lower expectations, but i had a feeling season 1 would be a bit more of a slow roll. Don't get me wrong because i am sure there are some exciting parts coming, but not that surprised they had to get into an episode like this.

i would say it is easily an "A" for how it was done, but i think it would be less of an issue for a lot if it was a mid-season episode with maybe a dash of some action in or plot moving forward to keep fans interested. i think i would only have an issue with the episode is if we get a few of these types of episodes that feel like more filler and not plot driven. if the next episode is more action packed and moving the Ellie and Joel story forward i think most will be fine with this episode and move on

The worse thing they could do with this series is turn it into season 2 (or 3, can't remember) of TWD "Down on the Farm". I don't get the feel that's where this is going but then I didn't with TWD either.

It's not easy to convey genuine emotion on TV well. Can easily feel contrived. I know it sounds corny, but if you ever want to watch an hour-ish of television that presents love as an emotion, this one's it. Offerman was outstanding. That helps.

Also based on how most video game to movies/shows turn out, I'd think it would be better to make the story more full than just going around shooting Zombies in the head.

I was a bit surprised by that last episode - but it was also interesting to see how some people adjusted and dealt with the pandemic. Sure I enjoyed the earlier part of him going into the town, etc. more than the love story angle - but that did add some depth and humanity to the tale.

I wouldnt say it strayed from the video game. These were minor characters in the game and they wasted an hour giving them a backstory. In the video game they got the truck from Bill. Thats it. Thats what happened here as well.

BTW they have strayed from the video games several times so far and each one was well done and I have no issues with:

• tendrils instead of spores
• Tess dying by infected rather than soldiers
• Bill dies

I agree with @jobarules on this one. I'm a huge fan of the game and until this point I've been totally fine with the deviations they've done. They have been well done. I just kept waiting for the point of this episode and by the end it just felt like a waste.

I mean, I guess I agree with that. There is an overall plot to this story though. Bill and Frank are such a small part to the story. They could have done a slice of life with Ellie and Joel traveling and it would have at least advanced some of the relationship between them. Which is crucial to the overall story.

For me the issue was this was the 3rd episode. The best parts were Joel and Elle developing chemistry, the explanation of what actually happened with the flour, Bill prepping.

The love story was honestly pretty corny and hamfisted stuff.

This. I would interested in seeing this type of thing more. It enriches the entire story by fleshing out the backstories of “minor” characters.

I'll admit that there were a few "uncomfortable" moments. I mean if you're not gay, the thought of a man lying on top of another man is not something you want to see. I can't help that it makes me flinch a bit - however I won't say it shouldn't be shown or that anything is being "forced down my throat". Obviously you're not saying that either.

And at the same time love is love - and that aspect of the story was very sweet. Ron Swanson deciding to end it as well, was very touching and romantic, as it would have been if a husband decided to go out when it was his wife's time.

As someone who was already wavering on sticking with the show even before this episode, this one didn't help. I'll stay with it and hope this is a one-off but being that they did what to me amounts to a filler episode so early in its run makes me think more is to come to stretch out the story. They could have at least had the guy die by getting infected and made it relevant to the actual story I tuned in for. Thankfully, the previews for next week look good.

I don't remember, only that the first episode was good and the end was good but there was no meat in the middle and it really stretched my desire to continue.

My .02 on the Bill storyline from a non-gamer:

1) I thought the acting was excellent. Everyone involved did a great job with the role.
2) I do like the slice of humanity/life to show what life may be like when you're not fighting zombies. Enjoyed the passage of time aspect as well.
3) Some aspects were indeed too unrealistic (Bill going Rambo in the open, Drinking Beaujolais after 20 years , for example)
4) I am certainly not homophobic, but it did feel "Forced" into the story.. like it was checking a "quota box" for modern Hollywood.
5) I agree with those who said it was odd to drop this type of episode in as Ep3, while core character arcs are still being laid out.

Overall I'll give it a B-. It was very good TV in a vacuum. However, gets dinged for feeling a touch disingenuous/forced, as well as for deviation in the scheme of the story and timing in the series.

Definitely not going to stop me from continuing to enjoy what is a great show so far.
