Another reason for the zombies to the barn could be the fire. Could have smelled it which is an odd smell that might have attracted them.

The campfires never seemed to attract the zombies when they were camping out in the open woods for the past three seasons.

I'm beginning to think some posters in this thread wouldn't last a week in a zombie crisis. Things that seem dumb, crazy after 18 months of zombie stuff come in hindsight of not having 18 months of a zombie crisis. Some of these posters are showing a lack of thought or care after 18 months of having the world turn upside down and having to do things just to survive.

Water? Abundant water? If there is a rain drought of a couple weeks, a small creek will dry up. Trees, grass, get that water pretty darn quick. Its not like these guys were walking next to the Mississippi River. Other than rain water, one should assume that any standing water is contaminated to some extent. Especially being in an out of control environment unlike Terminus where people had irrigation and water supplies in a controlled environment.

Many of the complainers in the thread would be dead after a month or so if this thing ever happened. So, any complaints going forward may be "unbelievable" in nature but you'd be dead or controlled by those able to survive. Have fun.

come on. The writing on this show is silly and inconsistent. Don't try to defend it. They've got batteries for flashlights and cigarettes but they can't find water?

Don't understand why they don't have bags of essentials they carry around with them (batteries, pedialyte, vitamins, antibiotic, etc.). My first stop would always be some structure in a town resembling like a Walgreens or something. Stock up on that ####.

This was the just like the smoke monster episode in lost. Everyone was digging the survival and mystery cool story and characters then all of a sudden smoke monster, WTF?

A magic tornado, a waterproof indestructible barn a herd of zombies walking at the barn and they all are swept away and crushed under trees, oh then the morning after a tornado blows through some guy from the J crew catalog is out for a stroll rolls up on them while they are listening to a music box they thought was better to carry around instead of extra equipment.

Yeah this just went from survival drama to fantasy bull####.

There is a reason Kirkman writes comic books and not serious drama because he sucks at it.

Felt like the show's jump the shark episode.

This show "rained zombies" a long time ago.

Anyone care to tell me what happened to the almighty stench from when Professor Mullet got knocked senseless by Capt. Ginger?

We never got to see the hundreds of zombies all stacked on a fence line or whatever plot device the writers came up with...is it just gone and forgotten?

As for this episode...good Lord...why bother? Writers just completely mail this thing in now.

Maybe it's already been discussed, but are they going for something religeous now? When I saw the frogs and the cicada carcass, biblical plagues passed through my pea brain. Then when J Crew showed up, I thought "Damien".

To the larger point, I agree with those who say the writing can be really bad. I don't know if it's laziness or incompetence or both, but it could be a lot better than it is from a plotting standpoint.

I do enjoy the show most of the time, but I REALLY have to throw any critical thinking out the window to do so sometimes.

About the tornado. Fantastical things happen all the time in movies and shows. A ton of movies have been made about natural disasters and the characters of those of course survive against great odds. It is possible the tornado wiped out all the zombies breaking in the barn without actually touching the barn, no. But for the sake of the show, why not. The problem is they didn't SHOW IT. Instead they cut scene out the most dramatic part of the night and instead took up the hour with a bunch of boo hooing and music boxes. Totally lame, they should air this during the daytime with all the other soap operas.

Then they were being attacked and a twister got the walkers but not the barn. Not to mention their group very much resembles the isrealites wandering in the desert.

A lot of religious symbolism is being thrown out there.

Ok sure, but what kind of standard are we holding the show to?

I don't think anyone went to see any of the disaster movies expecting realism. This is the highest rated show on television, think about that. It has better ratings that Breaking Bad had during any point. Maybe it's just me, but I would think the writing should surpass that of cheesy disaster flicks. Besides, a lot of these are very obvious to a lot of people -- hire 5 people to screen the shows and let them pick the stupid things apart.

Didn't think it was one of the best episodes the show has done but I thought it was an admirable attempt to show how difficult life has gotten in terms of both just surviving (without gas and water/food at a minimum) and in terms of showing how some of the characters (primarily Maggie, Sasha and Daryl but also Gabriel) are dealing with loss and other issues they're confronting.

I thought the episode picked up considerably once they got to the barn. As others have noted it's not a coincidence the three characters experiencing the greatest loss were the first ones to protect the barn from the walkers. I really liked the episode's final 10-15 minutes or so. Just wasn't as riveted for the first 40-45 or so. I'm guessing "The Road" is the type of approach they were going for with this episode.

What was the plan during the storm and the zombies were pushing the barn? Push back and hope they go away? With the gaping holes in the door, take the katana and the machete and start thinning the crowd a bit. Has to be a better idea then waiting for a tornado to hit and take them all out.

I was thinking the same thing. Figured they were going to go that route. The "fade to black" and subsequent Virgina/MD tornado scene made me thing about Lost and Jumping the Shark.

I did enjoy the opening scene where Maggie heard the zombie coming behind her in the woods. We still need to answer the most important question of: "If a zombie ambles through the forest and noone is there to hear it, would it make a sound"

Does the red haired guy turn next episode? When Sasha was going Rambo on the Zombies at the beginning, she slashed him on the bicep with a knife covered in infected blood. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised to see the opening of next episode being him chewing on someone - like Waldo in the prison episode.

I noticed the lack of wiping off zombie blood for the first time in this episode. Not for the potential of someone to turn, but just from a "you need to clean your blade or it will start to corrode the blade" viewpoint.

It's not that it's unrealistic, it's that it's inconsistent.

Scifi shows obviously aren't realistic, but they abide by the rules set in that world. This show makes them up on the fly.

I think the barn door scene was just showing the overall theme of the episode, that Rick even mentioned when he said "This is how we survive". They are all survivors. I think by having the three people (Daryl, Maggie, and Sasha) who were all on the verge of letting go, being the first three to the barn door, showed that. Simple as that. I enjoyed it.

Me too. One thing I've noticed in the transition to Gimple as a showrunner is that he is far heavier on the symbolism than Darabont and Mazzara were.

it's a show set in current times... about zombies. I'm happy to roll with zombies and any kind of craziness if real life stuff makes sense. when it doesn't, it weakens a show where we're already buying into one far-fetched conceit.

That's not to say I think this show is perfect and every episode has been perfect. It just means that most of the things I see people complaining the most about are things that are often extraordinarily trivial when it comes to my overall enjoyment of the show.

I will say I don't think the writing is anywhere near as bad as some here insist. So I acknowledge I go into each show thinking of it far more positively than some here do each week.

you're totally right though- the writers spent so much time on the gang's misery, they just ran out of time to... dunno... explain how they went from fighting for their lives to sleeping like babies. don't think it would've taken much for them to have a big noise and shake the barn a bunch and then cut to sleep-guys.
