Official US Women's soccer thread: ***Update- Christen Press retires (3 Viewers)

Some interesting news from England today as the EPL owners have agreed to perform a feasibility study where the plan will be to take over women's club soccer in England (which is currently controlled by the England FA).

This could be a huge turning point for the sport as they need to find a way to make this work at the club level for the sport to fully thrive for the women.

Here in the US the WC TV viewing numbers have been wonderful (as they have been in other countries) but it all will be meaningless if the people watching don't transfer some interest to the women's every day jobs playing at their club teams in the NWSL.

If they started showing women's soccer on TV regularly at the club level, would you guys watch?

I mean, when would be a time that would work?

If England gets this to work, they'll leave the US in the dust within a decade or two and I suspect other Euros will follow.  Their structure for men is so much better than ours and I suspect they'll do a similar thing for the women if they can get the dollars out of it.

I’m not a fan of celebrations outside of high fives and hugs. But let’s  not lose sight of the fact that in men’s soccer, most of them celebrate a goal by acting like their wife just gave birth to their first born.  Or do the “Take the L” Fortnite dance, etc.

This question comes up every 4 years and every time the evidence is that it never translates to the club level.  I have a feeling that we will see a little progress in other countries but minimal here.

I also think that watching on TV is not the most important thing for women's club soccer to grow.  People have to go to games.  Financially, these small leagues live and die on game day revenue.  I think you have to grow attendance first and then hope to grow your tv audience later.

Look at MLS as an example, it is a thriving business right now but still has a small tv audience.  When you get 22k plus coming to games on average, your sponsorship and game day revenue can grow quickly.

Obviously getting any where near a 20k average for the women is impossible for the time being, they need to find a way to get to the 10k average league wide.  You would think with millions watching the WC on tv, it would translate, but history has shown it hasn't, at least up till now.

I love excessive celebrations in any sort of close game.

I hate celebrations that rub the other teams nose in it no matter the score.

Male or female is meaningless in this context IMO.

My tv time is limited now but I would go to a game with my son and wife for sure.

Honestly, no.  I have probably watched 3/4 of the WC matches, but a huge part of the appeal is the format/countries and the "big event" feel.  I have nothing but respect for women's soccer, but honestly there are already sports to consume basically every minute of free time someone has.  I think it would just get buried.

I hate to say it, but very rarely would I watch.  Maybe any championships or Cup games but that's it.

Women's soccer is great in this format between countries.  I love it every 4 years.  However, even with the best 23 players from each country, the skill level is a huge step down from even an average MLS game.  Put two or three of these women on each team and fill in the roster with worse players and it's gonna be even worse.  Now, in person?  I'd absolutely catch a game in person.  The feel is so much different and it's much easier to watch, but on tv you need highly skilled players doing incredible things to make it watchable IMO and I think they still lack too much of that.

England player could do a mock school massacre celebration to have a poke at the yanks.
Exact comment from Spurs board:  "Hopefully we do some gun celebrations, fake deaths and mass genocide reenactments to even up the score"

I think this is pretty well-known, but US women have been playing for Euro clubs for years.  Probably half the players on the current team, and large numbers from the prior generation played at some point in their careers at the top Euro clubs.

I would not watch.  There's so much great televised sports available these days that I'm already severely pressed for time that I can allocate to the couch.  Yesterday it was over 6 hours of soccer, and that's on a freakin Tuesday.  Tonight there are two must-see knockout semis in the Copa and Gold cup.  Sunday there are 3 finals - WWC, Copa and Gold Cups. It already seems I am watching live televised sports 365 days a year, and more and more opportunities become available every season - from high school and youth competitions to international sports I've not been able to watch live since I lived abroad.  I don't have time for MLS games, so there's no way I would watch the women's leagues.  That said, I have watched every single Women's WC game this year and enjoyed it very much.

This.

And fwiw, women's club soccer is on TV already... I love the sport, but don't watch now and won't watch more- unless 8yo floppinha unexpectedly develops an interest. There's already so much top quality stuff from overseas, along with MLS team I support- not enough time in the day. My wife used to ask me on weekends "how much soccer can you watch?". My answer was always "all of it". Now, there's just too much, so I have to be selective.

Ten years ago, there was enough on American tv to keep any insane fan fully satisfied.

Now a days, and especially with streaming, the options are limitless.  And I am not just talking all the big leagues, we can access reserve games, youth games, literally any game on the planet that has a camera pointed at it and an internet connection is available to watch.  It is kind of surreal.

But all of this talk again goes back to my point where the women can not have a league where tv viewers are the key part of the business plan.  The business plan has to start and most likely end, with as much game day revenue as possible.

Pretty cool that Phoenix was a top ten market for viewers for the game yesterday and then later that same day drew over 60k for the Gold Cup game.

As a side note, I guess Precourt may have been right lusting after Austin so badly for his MLS team.  Austin has been the #1* tv market for the WC in the US

*Based on ratings, not total viewers (obviously).

I've started recording and watching Thorns games and have now gone to two games live.  They're great fun.  For me and especially when I take my daughter.

I'm very excited for someone on the US Team to cut a Dusty Rhodes "Hard Times" level promo on Sunday.  If anything we need more celebrations.  Would've liked to see a Revolutionary War reference mixed in yesterday.  People forget England blew a 13 colony lead in 1776.

If the Thorns could be replicated in say even 5 or 6 other cities, the league would be in a great spot.

Obviously Portland is nuts about the sport.  The Thorns average I think 4 times the league average, and the Timbers have sold out every game since they came into MLS in 2011.

With the newly expanded stadium, if and when you guys finally lay down grass, you are going to get a consistent run of both USMNT and USWNT games.

AND THEN LOST THE REMATCH IN THE WAR OF 1812!!!!

The timing of Morgan's celebration was misplaced.  There was a LOT of time left and I don't think you want to provide the other team any more incentive in a very close game.  She's also lucky she didn't get seriously hurt yesterday, which would have hampered the US chances going forward.

Also, England had accused the US of essentially spying on them at their hotel and practice, which I'm believing was unfounded.  If another team accused mine of cheating prior to the contest, I'd be pissed off too, especially if the accusations were baseless.

Oh, and lets not forget that blowhard Piers Morgan running his mouth prior to the game.  Not sure why he's England's spokesperson, but that jackwagon is constantly in the news for saying provocative things about a sport I'm guessing he's never even played at a level higher than grade school.  If Elmers' Glue could take on the shape of a human body, it would be Piers Morgan.

were we even WC fodder during the Georgie Best heyday?

George Best was not English :)

Arguably the biggest upset in WC history was when the US beat England back in 1950.  The NY Times assumed the score was wrong that was sent to them.  Instead of reporting that the US won 1-0, they reported England won 10-0 :)

If anything Press or Morgan should've done their best to pantomime that picture of Piers working out in public with 5 lb dumbbells.  Would be a higher degree of difficulty for world class athletes to look that doughy but I would've applauded the effort.

From what I know from my English friends, he is considered as much of a spokesman for England as Steven A Smith is for the US.  Nothing more than a blow hard.

Fully cognizant that Portland is the outlier and don't know that NWSL will catch on in other cities.  Would have expected better numbers for Seattle, but they are as low as some other markets.  After every WC, it seems like there is initial fervor for women's' pro teams that is never sustained and eventually fizzles out.  Guessing that happens after this WC too.

I'll just consider myself lucky to live where I live so I can take my little girl to games where the fans are as much a part of the experience as they are for Ducks or Blazers games which were great fun to take my older boys to over the years.

Best was from Northern Ireland and never played in a single WC game.

He was considered one of the greatest players ever, which is remarkable since the guy was addicted to both alcohol and drugs through out his career.  He was a true genius the few times he was sober and extreme elite even when impaired.

Yeah, that's my read on him too.  Good comparison.  How both earn as much attention as they do boggles me as much as the lionazation of the Kardashians and the Ball family.  I could live 10 lifetimes and not comprehend that fascination.

Now if the English wanted to celebrate a goal by pretending to open an envelope and gasping at the cost of a health care bill, I would have appreciated those antics.

so, the Mickey Mantle of soccer/footy - gotcha

now, to this Irish/Catlick 'Murican the big question is ... was he of the Ian Paisley ilk of Northern Ireland? cuz if so he can #### right the mother #### off  - and im'ma guess he was 'cuz the English would've never embraced a filthy Catholic ape.

I went with both teams score a goal at -110. Other than that, and even including that, this game scares me gambling wise. I'll dabble in live betting later.
yeah, got the same line with my book - caveat is it has to not be a draw - think i'd rather just book the Sweets at +225 for rt win, or the +120 to advance.

The United States women’s national team continue to break records on and off the pitch.

Business Insider reports that Nike’s home kits for the 2015 champions, who just booked a spot in this Women’s World Cup final after beating England Tuesday, are now the top-selling soccer jersey for a single season in company history.

“The USA Women's home jersey is now the No. 1 soccer jersey, men's or women's, ever sold on Nike.com in one season,” CEO Mark Parker announced on the company’s earning call Thursday. “The exposure is driving outstanding sell-through in kits, high-performance bras and lifestyle extensions.”
