Official US Women's soccer thread: ***Update- US Legend, Tobin Heath to retire. (4 Viewers)

Question: has there ever been a game where after the penalty kick save on the ensuing scramble around the net there was ANOTHER penalty awarded?

vietnam MF is terrible

our women are ripping right through them.

Also, have to put that away Alex...but I still love you long time.

That might have been Naeher’s first touch there just before half. I’m probably forgetting one or two but shes done almost nothing back there.

Me live: Morgan looked offside.

Replay: Morgan looked offside.

VAR: Morgan not offside.

Me: Huh

VAR lines drawn: Morgan looked offside.

Me: :oldunsure:

Can the Vietnam goalie win the golden glove with a team that gets routed in 3 games?

Gotta feel for Vietnam getting drawn into a group with BOTH finalists from last time. With an expanded field no less.

Worried about that game against the Duchollerlands for the US though. Gotta bury chances against them.

Seems like your arm shouldn’t make you offside since you can’t touch the ball with it
The rule now states that a players arm can no longer make you offside. It has to be a part of the body that can play the ball.

Horan bossed the Vietnam defense and midfield. Obviously Smith gets the love with a brace and an assist but aside from the Vietnam goalie, Horan was the best player in the game.

Rapinoe is past it. No burst, can't win a second ball to save her life and can't create or finish any more. She shouldnt play in a competitive game.

Lavelle looked rusty. Untindy first touches and should have scored at least one. Dunn also looked ungood IMO. Errant passes and oit of position some times. Etrz was solid.

If I'm other teams i foul Smith all day long and make Morgan and Rodman beat me. CONCACAF it up and get the US in card trouble. I have no idea if the US defense is any good since Vietnam had literally nothing going, so we'll see what they got wheb they get challenged. US still favored by a lot (-130) against the Dutch (+375) with a draw at +235.

Agree with this, and it's not close. Every ball in the forward/mid area she just bossed everyone else out of the way and took control of it.

To be fair, she's about 3x the size of some of those Vietnam players though.

While they were playing, I was shocked at how easily the US players were able touscle the VIETs off the ball and beat them to the ball... Felt like women against girls.

When they were shaking hands after the game is when I saw the VIET players wer barely to the height, and usually not, of the US players shoulders. It really was women and against girls in terms of size.

US coach.... Hit it wide, and put it in the mixer. What? No... You don't have to look to see where to cross it.
Yeah, that's not gonna cut it against a better team. They will have to link up better in the final third. Also, there's no way those line breaking passes from the defense will be so easy in coming games. They will need to progress the ball through the middle of the field instead of getting it to 25 yards out with ease.

wow, I just checked Vietnam's qualifying run. They really don't belong in a World Cup.

Group stage. No wins, 1 draw, 2 losses. -6 GD

They advanced in 3rd place (by a single GD to a minnow) to the quarter finals, where they lost 3-1.

Some how they still advanced to another round due to Australia being host and being removed from this part. Vietnam then beat Chinese Taipei and Thailand to qualify.

Great number for just the English portion.

Group stage for a women's world cup, I assume.

They looked it. Their goalie saved them from going down by 6 or 7. They had essentially zero offense all game.

I commented to my wife that Naeher should have brought a book

today/last night's results:
Jamaica 0- France 0........ I know France is a favorite, and I'd heard Jamaica had improved- but still a shock result to me. Stats look to have heavily favored France.

Netherlands 1- Portugal 0..... Important game for the US, and even though I mentioned knowing only that Portugal was a debutant- I was expecting a more lopsided result (caveat- just googled and these two played in the euros with the dutch winning 3-2... so I guess it's closer than I thought). this is looking like a difficult group- the US will have to earn their way out of it- no cake-walk here.

Swiss 2- S Africa 1........ I know zip about either team. I feel like the African teams in general are behind the growth of the euro and s american teams... but hopefully the sport is building some momentum and support there for the women.

I think it was Sweden, not the Swiss.

The Swedes were one of the tiny handful of countries, like the US, that did not put huge impediments in way of the ladies in the early days. The USWNT was even coached by a Swedish legend for a while.

As for this game last night, it was almost an enormous upset. SA was up by 1 in the second half when Sweden scored this fluky goal (own goal)

Sweden then won the game in the 90th minute.

ah- thanks! The Swedes are a long-time power, as you say. The Swiss, I know zip.
what a sad way to lose or even give up points for SA.

The keeper reacted so late on the OG. It just trickled in

I’m pretty sure it’s happening anyway after the WC, but Morgan and Rapinoe should not be starters for sure. At best a late sub. Morgan was invisible all game, but for her phenomenal PK attempt.

Like the men’s side of old, I’m sick of players being rostered because of the “they earned their stripes” nonsense.

wasn't Morgan the one who's 1st time amazing flick opened up Smith on the first goal? poor pk, but lots of great movement.

Rapinoe... I think she's coming back from injury, like Lavelle? they both looked completely off the game. Rapinoe especially. but if she's healthy- she should definitetly be in the super sub role. I didn't think she was expected to start this time around regardless?

She had that back heel assist on the first goal, right? I thought her transition to a hold up forward was good. Smith and Rodman should be able to get free and shoot from 10-15 yards.
I watched highlights from the 2019 cup and that US team definitely looked a cut above this one. Rapinoe was a different player, able to create separation on the edge and deliver a dangerous cross. That was definitely missing in their first game.

Rodman is fun, but lacks Rapinoe's polish (previous, and when healthy... did not look good vs VIET).

I agree though- even if Morgan isn't what she was, her play up front will free or set up Smith and Rodman

eta: I don't know who's there behind her in the roster... anybody know if there's a like for like with Morgan?

Looks like Germany and Brazil both announced themselves today. I'm not going to see much of the group stage games - hoping to find the time when they get to the knockouts as it seems this could be a great competition once the riff-raff is cleared out.

This Colombia vs South Korea game is entertaining so far. Apparently Korea plays like the John Starks era Knicks (they said a "friendly" vs Ireland was...abandoned for injury concerns if I heard right. Colombia with fast counters. Oh and one of the Korea players has gotten kicked in the head already.

This is an interesting stat.

Of the 18 games played so far, only a single game has seen both teams score.

Scoring in general is way down so far, but that could flip when certain matchups occur and scores get run up.

Casey Phair subbed on for South Korea. She turned 16 less than a month ago. New Jersey based dual nat who chose her mom’s home country rather than her American dad.

here is a graphic that shows every player in the World Cup that was born in the US

The Philippines?
big win for them over the hosts last night.
