***Official*** Washington Redskins 2015 Offseason Thread (2 Viewers)

On the radio today, Kevin Sheehan said that if Fowler was on the board at pick 5, the Redskins would have traded down with Atlanta, hoping Scheff would fall to #8. However, people are now hearing that Scheff was high on the Jets draft board, ahead of Leonard Williams. If Scheff was gone at #8, the next player of the Redskin's draft board was RB Todd Gurley, who apparently was high on a lot of draft boards.

Given how much grief the Redskins got on this board for taking an OL at #5, imagine what the reaction would be to trade down and end up with Gurley at #8.
Not as bad as the "almost happened" trade for Chad Johnson.
I could never figure out what was worse with that trade: That the Redskins offered it or the that the Bengals didn't take it.

Cutting Chester at this time is surprising. He was running with the starters yesterday at OTAs. I guess it took Spencer Long one day of OTAs to win the starting RG spot.

Note that Chester's contract and age don't make him a surprise cut. Just the timing of the cut.

Yeah I'm not sure why they didn't either A) Cut him earlier or B) just wait until after OTAs.

Well, it didn't really hurt to keep him around until BIll Callahan could see the OL group live in action with pads on. IMHO, Callahan is almost as big an addition to this Team as McCloughan, and Callahan brings with him a power-running style proficiency that's markedly different from the zone blocking stuff we've been employing over the last few years. I don't think they're finished tinkering with the OL yet, either. There are quality C's G's and T's still out there looking for homes, and what we have on the Roster, the majority of it is easily upgraded or replaced, especially with a change in scheme...Long did nothing to impress me in 2014, and I think the Kouandjio kid from Alabama projects as a better pro than him, so I'm not sure he's 'won' anything yet - more like 1st string by attrition.. I expect more moves through the summer, and at least 2 new faces in this group before the snaps start counting in September.

Wasn't Long originally scouted out to be better suited for a more Power Running Style that Callahan is putting in? Rather than the ZBS the team was running.

Yes, it was thought that he and Moses were the first "Gruden guys" on the OL to eventually develop and replace the ZBS starters leftover from the Shanny era, with Gruden running a bit of both until the switch was complete. Bringing in Callahan and a guy with a better eye for OL talent should speed up the process quite a bit, but Long could be a Gruden/Allen pick that makes it.

Trent Williams has a torn tendon in his ankle. Won't be doing surgery and should miss some TC but definitely back for the regular season. Heard Chris Russell mention that Williams has also lost around 20lbs.

Wow. The Redskins are having mini-camp. Yet no posts here in over two weeks. It is hard to imagine a Redskin team that was not a magnet for coverage and controversy.

Apparently at mini-camp, everything is controlled to make the players look good to the media. So everyone looks good. And there is no other news.

Has to be one of the most likeable drug addicts ever.

"I went to a veteran teammate's house," he recalls. "I'm not going to name names, but he was an All-Pro cornerback."
:lmao: Good job keeping things confidential, Dexter. Joe Lavender made a couple Pro Bowls, but never All Pro. Lemar Parrish was both Pro Bowl and All Pro, so I'll go with him.
I had this exact same reaction. Took me like 15 seconds on pro football reference to figure out who he was talking about.

That was a nice read, thanks for linking. This is crazy:

When the cyst disappeared, so did all of Manley's urges. He has remained sober ever since, and says he doesn't struggle with temptation. Multiple doctors have told him that the cyst was located in the part of the brain associated with impulse control. His therapist believes that the cyst itself was the root of his addiction.

Letter to My Younger Self by Albert Haynesworth
Oh, when you get on that first phone call with Dan Snyder and the organization in Washington, it’ll be all good. “We want you to play just like you did in Tennessee, Albert. We’re going to let you loose and destroy the Giants, Cowboys and Eagles. That’s your job.”

Then during your first OTA, you’re going to be introduced to a different brand of football. I can already see you rolling your damn eyes. How can football be different? I’m a defensive lineman. Well, football in Washington versus football in Tennessee was like the difference between a general physician and a cardiologist. Both doctors. One is just a little more sophisticated.

People are going to be all over you for your contract, and you’re going to feel really frustrated. You’re going to do some dumb things. But what people aren’t going to see is Mike Shanahan calling you into his office and saying, “Albert, we just want you to eat up space. All we want you to do is grab the center and let the linebackers run free.”

You’re going to look at this famous NFL head coach in total disbelief and say, “You want to pay me $100 million to grab the center?”

And he’s going to say, with a straight face, “Albert, if you have more than one sack this season, I’m going to be pissed.”

The last thing you’ll say before walking out of the office is, “Can’t you just pay someone $300,000 a year to do that?”

I enjoyed this entire letter from AH.

Ryan O'Halloran on twitter:

I wish I could write a letter to my 14-year old self about attempting to cover Albert Haynesworth with Redskins. ... "Ignore him."

Back when Scot McCloughan was hired as the new GM in DC, I did a full roster eval of his new team. Here it is: http://nflphilosophy.com/washington-redskins-2014-roster-evaluation/ …http://t.co/7dqyVoAbTz

Great breakdown of the Redskins offseason moves in the link, position by position. I only wish this guy would do this every team. He chooses one team a year. This year, the Redskins were up.

I only read the Overall Evaluation.

The defensive summary: It was also poorly schemed and had a lot of guys doing things that they weren't good at. Better preparation, coaching, and play calling could make an immediate impact on this defense.

In the offensive summary: The offense is a lot of square pegs in round holes.

This guy sure did not think much of the coaching staff. Part of the offensive issue is they were intent on transitioning to power running game. Not sure what Haslett's issue was since he was there for 4 years.

CBS Sports site has us 32 out of 32 in their preseason rankings.
I guess the potential of a Gruden/RG3 combination isn't wowing anybody.

Seriously, I think the Redskins have hired a good GM and have made progress in the offseason. But as long as Jay Gruden is coach I don't see them getting much better. He handled so many things badly last year that I think he is in over his head as a head coach. He is living off the name that his brother created.

On Redskin sat 1, they were asking if the Redskins had a playoff caliber QB. I thought the more interesting question is, "Do the Redskins have a playoff caliber head coach?"

Training camp starts is a couple of days. The offseason has been so quiet with Griffin not tweeting inspirational messages and campaign slogans. No media battles between Griffin and the Head Coach. No Cousins should be the starter or traded talk.

Are they actually acting like a football team instead of a soap opera?

The skill positions are there as long as the QB play isn't detrimental, and I don't think it will be. The defense is moving in the right direction. I love the additions on that side of the ball and the subtraction of Haslett. Cowboys are clear favorites in the division. Everyone else has significant question marks. We can hang in there. Soft early schedule will tell a lot. We aren't winning early, we might end up 32 out of 32. On the other hand, we can end up winning early and still end up 6-10...

Give it a month.

The worst decision we've made this year is scheduling a scrimmage with the Texans. That episode of Hardknocks will be an hr of name protests and they were too stupid to see it coming. The team and the NFL.

Doc and BMitch didn't sound too excited yesterday. They said all they saw the offense do was make check downs and screens and commented how they have never in their lives seen a QB running in 7on7 drills.

I'm so in the dark of what's going on this offseason. I don't want to project my own reduction in interest onto the rest of the community, but do others since a pretty large decline in interest among the fan base? I'd like to think a big reason for the quiet is a sign of an organization correction, but could part of it be because the media senses it doesn't sell like it used to?

I feel less invested in the team and the NFL every year. Not sure exactly how much not winning is a part of it.

Doc Walker and Brian Mitchell are awful to listen to.

I like Doc but BMitch is a hothead. I've called him Napoleon on the radio multiple times after he's lost his mind. This obviously pisses him off more then when a caller disagrees with him. I had him talking about me all afternoon about a month ago.I'm not a big on trolling people but he's a disaster.

I got a friend a Doc Walker jersey (actually says DOC WALKER) on the back a few years ago as a joke. He's a Jets fan and hates Doc. Anyways, he wore it to a game once and someone asked him if he was a dog walker. Lol.

I don't think I am.

Just because I disagree doesn't mean I'm trolling. I admit I'm often a contrarian, but that isn't limited to the topic of football.

I think part of it is the Redskins have been so bad and, unless there is a big improvement in QB play, they will still be bad.

I think the other part: it feels like Roger Goodell runs the NFL very heavy handedly. In most issues ranging from the Cap Penalty, Bounty Gate, Adrian Peterson, referee lockout, and now deflate gate, he is very over the top in the punishments and dealing with issues. I think that is really taking a toll on the NFL. Deflate Gate and a lawsuit from Tom Brady is the last thing the NFL needs, but it looks like they are getting it.

My biggest beef with Goodell is he is so inconsistent when handing out punishment. I know not every case is the same but it seems so uneven.

You sort of troll. But for the most part you are good natured about it, so I don't have a problem with it. When I do something similar I like to think of it as needling rather than trolling.

Definitely agree. But, like I said, I don't want to project my feelings onto the fanbase as a whole because part of it for me is just my stage in life. The Redskins and sports are still important to me, just not quite as important as they used to be. Other things have pushed them down a rung or two.

I remember when I was 10 years younger that I used to look at people 10 years older and look down upon their fandom. What, you don't live, breathe, and eat everything Redskins? You don't know the full roster and have strong opinions about who the backup center should be? You don't have this season's schedule memorized? Now I'm that guy.
