P90X - Anyone try this? (1 Viewer)

Probably getting this for Xmas; for those of you who have it - would it be a problem if space is... somewhat limited? I'm also a bit concerned of any segments where i may have to jump; low ceilings here and I'm 6'5.
A lot of the plyometrics would be difficult if you are worried about hitting your head on the ceiling.

Wanted to get one of the doorframe pullup bars but the only doorframe in the area is too wide (38").

Looks like most only go up to 32" with a couple maxing out at 36".

Would install one down in the basement but I don't have a TV or DVD player down there.

Have a TV in the bedroom with space to do this but only double doors in there so wouldn't work there either.

I keep getting pissed off at myself for being so out of shape when I do this workout. Toward the end of the Chest/Back routine, I could only do one push up. Tell me it gets better!

it does, I started the same way. Now doing at least 20 at the end of the workout.Took this week off, then going back.

I previously got to about day 70 on p90x and lost my frame of mind, missing a couple weeks. So, I decided to re-focus and start over on day 1 using some supplements this go around. Just started my second week on monday and I feel alot more motivated to get all the way through.

I really love this program, but it is tough. Make sure you are mentally prepared to finish this thing out.

Through my first 70 days I lost a couple inches on my waist and gained a ton of muscle.

Some advice

- try your best to not skip any days, if you are out of town bring your dvds and what you can with you. It really is important to do each work out.

- If you do skip only one or two days then just continue on the workout schedule as if you did the workout. Anymore then that and I would suggest continuing from where you left off or just start that week over again.

- If you are having an "off" day and just really dont feel like doing it, just do what you can, maybe skip a few sets or cut it short. Anything is better then nothing.

- Try your best to eat right during this. You will see ALOT better results

- Don't get discouraged the first week, trust me it gets easier. Just do what you can. I was so bad at yoga the first week, now I can just about do every move and have increased my flexibility. Same goes with the amount of reps in everything.

P90x can really do great things if you let it

Downloading. 7GB? See you boys in 2008. :homer:
Took a couple of days.
Bought mine on Ebay, but the guy canceled the order saying his storage unit got flooded and it was ruined. Decided to check out the torrent, there is now enough seeders where it looks like i'll have it downloaded in about 2 hours.First torrent i've ever downloaded, I don't know if I'll buy anything ever agian.

Lehigh- was just looking at the booklet that came with my Iron Gym Extreme, and they offer an extension for larger doorways (you have to order it from them).

Anyone use creatine while on this program? I am 5'10" 165, looking to bulk up rather than lose weight. I have really liked Cellmass and a protein shake while doing a normal weight training program. Want to try P90X as an overall fitness program.
I just completed week 5 out of 12, and I'm loving it. Since about the 3rd day, I've followed up each workout with two or three scoops of Amplified Wheybolic Extreme 60, found at any GNC. It comes in chocolate and vanilla and can be mixed with either milk or water - both ways taste great. I typically mix it with 1% or skim milk. Each 3 scoop serving has 280 calories with only 10 of them come from fat... it's very healthy, an excellent recovery drink. Not sure how it compares to the P90X version.I also was taking a multi-vitamin at first, but I found that they upset my stomach so I've stopped that.
I see a lot of people recommending protein as a recovery drink - if I wanted to take creatine too, when should I take that? Also what are good brands? I just have CellMass from GNC.
there is creatine int he recovery drink
I feel like I should be adding a recovery drink, but not sure what to get. I want to get one that helps my muscles recover/grow, however I don't want to add a ton of bulk (especially don't want something that could gather around the middle). Do I go with protein... Whey... Creatine?

So I just started this program on Tuesday; started with Back and Chest - did Plyo yesterday and I am totally smoked! Actually felt sick after finishing the back and chest workout and now today am totally sore all over.

Good stuff!

I felt sick after Chest and Back the first time too, keep it up! It will get easier

Thanks, good to hear! I was shocked... I mean I can do the pushups (relatively) with no issue; but the chin/pull ups + the NON STOP for an hour was tough for sure. Literally couldn't imagine doing Ab X afterward! My main plan is to really just try and finish each workout, even if I can only do 1 rep of a specific movement. Doing those "under the fence" push ups annihilated me; I did 1 and done at the end.

Posted earlier in the thread on this, but the first time I did that workout I couldn't lift my arms above my shoulders the next day.

Got this a few weeks ago and plan on starting Sunday. Unfortunately, my doors are 36" . . . might have to get the Iron Gym Extreme + Extensions. Anyone try this just using the bands?

I hear ya, I could barely do a single pull up and had to use a chair, now i am able to get all the way through with no chair. Definitely try and do the Ab workouts though, even if it is just a few of them so you mentally get in the habit of it.

I would say a pull up bar is a must. You just arent going to get the same kind of resistence pulling the bands down. I started off with bands and a pull up bar my first go around and had no issues. They were cheap and effective. Just recently got some bowflex adjustable dumbells though and can already tell a difference. Weights are now my preference.I would say start out with the bands to see if you like the workout before forking up any money for weights.

After my first three days of P90x, it felt like rabid raccoons had chewed off my triceps. I can atest to the fact that it does get better.

Thanks for the follow up, I just looked on Amazon and think these might be the ones... Creative Fitness Door Gym Extension BarsPretty bad reviews though. One guy posted this...

Cheap, DIY alternative that actually WORKS!!, June 20, 2008

By O. Ivy "p90xer" (San Mateo, CA USA)

I was really excited to get the door gym, but when I first put it up I noticed that my door frame was just slightly too wide. If the door gym was about an inch or two longer on either side I would have been set. So I purchased these extension bars and, guess what, the previous reviews are right - these extension bars are worthless. I junked them and instead made my own extension bars that have worked out GREAT! I purchased two 1/2" by 12" steel tubes from my local hardware store (plumbing section) and slid them into each end after removing the end caps. They slide in perfectly and stop when they hit a set of screws. To tighten the fit and to make them just a little bit longer, I used electrical tape and taped three nickels to each end and slid them again again (nickel side first). Perfect! Then I just put the end caps on the the exposed threaded end of the steel tube (the end caps go OVER the steel tube) and slid the piece of foam back over the exposed steel. You would never even be able to tell that these were extended!

The bottom line is that if you door is too wide for the door gym (which again is an AWESOME product), don't stress, but also don't buy these. 1/2" steel tubing works great, can be had for under five bucks and can be as long or as short as you need them to be.

My problem is that I am so far from being able to do a single pull up, I'm not sure how much good the chair pull ups are doing me. After the second run through, my legs would be more tired than my arms. I couldn't find the balance to get my arms to do more of the work, and the legs just spotting. I'm doing the bands this time around just to try to build up some strength and get closer to being able to do a single pull up, so I'd have to rely less on my legs for a chair pull-up.

just ordered the p90x set off ebay for $85. looking forward to it.....kinda
Did the same thing, found a brand new set for $60... thank you China! Now need to get around to getting the gear and starting.I'm not planning on doing the exact program, just layering in with my running, maybe 3 days a week. Not sure if I'll even be able to find the time for that but going to try to fit in where I can.

I've got weights, which I'll use. I'm just worried about the lack of pull-up bar. I've got the P90X bar, but it says its max is 34-inch doors, and mine are 36". Has anyoe used the Iron Gym with its extensions?

Look 3 posts up.

I bought this for my BIL last year for his birthday. Has anyone tried to burn the DVDs. I know some DVDs will not burn. Would like to try this

I'm a few weeks in, and I still do the "heart" pushups on my knees (girl way) . The under the fence still kills me, especially at the end.

My finance and I want give this a try, but I have a few questions for those that have done it.

1) Will we be doing the same workouts, or are they different for men/women?

2) Is an average living room enough space for the two of us to do it at the same time?

3) What are the diets like and is it necessary to follow them?

In response to your 1st question - YES; the workout is the same, but they offer an easier version for most of the movements to make them a bit easier if the 'normal' exercise is too tough (aka; using a chair for support for chin ups).2nd - it should be, except for the Plyometric workouts, those you need a bit of space for for lunges/jumping, etc. 3) Although I just started the program, taking a look at the Diet it doesn't look too extreme; ABSOLUTELY critical to follow the diet if you want optimal results.

1) There is a different routine recommended for women, its called the lean routine, main differences are that it does more core work then chest and back and more cardio then playo. Men and Women can do any of the routines though so it is all personal preference of what you are looking to get out of it. 2) Yes3) The Diet is key if you want serious results. Personally, I don't have the discipline to follow them so I just try and watch what I eat.

Yeah, at first I was the same way but just slowly took more and more pressure off my legs, started with two legs, then one, then one leg with just my toes barely touching, then none. It's a little awkward at first, but your body will eventually adjust and you will find yourself suddenly doing a couple pullups with no chair. But I am sure the bands will build up that strength too.

Thanks for the advice guys.

-So is the "lean" program use the same DVD's or do you have to buy different ones?

-Is the diet specific right down to what and how much to eat at each meal, or does it just tell you how much protein, calories, etc to consume each day?

You get a DVD for each workout then just play the one that is apart of the routine, so, no you dont have to buy anything else.

Yes, it is pretty specific. You can follow the meal plan which basically lays out meals for you each day with recipes or the portion plan where you are given a list of how many serves of each food type you are allowed so you can devise your own meal plans

Anyone have any perspective on how much this program could reduce blood pressure and cholestrol? I imagine it's gotta do wonders for both.

Nice, thanks. Ordered the DVD's this weekend.

what do you use, dumbbells or resistance bands?

i dont have either yet. the cheap part of me wants to go with the bands, but my brain is telling me the dumbbells are the better workout.

thanks

Agreed, it is more expensive but worth it in my opinion

Definately go the adjustable dumb bell route if possible; they can be a bit pricey - but worth it. I'm loving my Select Tech 1090s.

WOW. Anyone else' hips hurting after finishing Ab Ripper X? I actually agree with Tony completely at the beginning with the whole "I hate Ab Ripper X, but i LOVE it". Even doing only 10-15 reps the first time through I had some trouble!

I watched Craigslist for a while before I got mine used.

I don't remember my hips hurting. I assume you mean the front of the hip? I could believe that, as I think that is where the hip flexor is.My wife and I did this together the first time I tried it. After he said that, I repeated, immitating Tony, "I HATE it....but I HATE it." No love part of it for me.

I'm doing P90X again for the third time, hoping to get past the first month for the first time. I'm not doing the Abs until I get a bit of the middle out of the way first. A little bit of incentive for myself to keep going, as waking up in the morning knowing i had to do abs that day killed me.

Yep - front of the hip. Didn't expect that at ALL on top of the 'expected' ab soreness. Got so bad last night I had to sleep in the fetal position to make sure I didn't stretch a bit too far. Very good/quick workout though. Looking forward to doing Chest/Back tomorrow!

Yeah, It is really hard to do it for 90 days straight. I am 34 days in and I missed a full week and a half due to travel and sickness and I'm probably going to start over tonight. Got through 60 days my first time.In my personal experience, I've learned that alot of it is mental. You really have to convince yourself you are going to do it each day. Doing things like you mention is great idea if it gives any sort of incentive. Skipping workouts because of lacking incentive or motivation was the main cause for my first attempt failure. Now, If I'm having a down day, I just tell myself I will cut back a little bit in the work out. This gives incentive to go ahead and do it, and I usually end up do the full workout anyway.

I'm in the Hate it, but Love it camp too. Had the soreness in the front of the hips/thighs like you do... it does get better. I am a little over a month into it and it's amazing how much easier AB X is now. Your core gets strong pretty quick. Now, Chest and Back... still kicks my ###. Good luck.

I think my expectations were too high the first time I tried it. I was putting away protein like nobody's business trying to bulk up like mad. After one month, I saw no results in the pictures, or the measurements and quickly got discouraged. Knowing myself better (knowing that I don't have the body composition to be able to pack on lean muscle), and changing my expectations of using this primarily to lose weight, will help me keep on track. I'm on day 8, and I'm down 3 lbs so far. As long as I keep losing, I'll stay motivated.

P90X is never going to bulk anyone up - ripped, perhaps but not huge.

started back today after a month off. Decided to go back to phase one...God the "Pot Stirrer" joke gets old after a while.
